Success = Recruiting Trap?

But what happened to Tech after he left? One bad hire and it causes a huge ripple affect.

For all the talk about how Leach is a once in a generation coach.....how many conference championships has he won in his 16 year career as a head coach? How many times has a Leach coached team won 10+ games? I appreciate everything the man has done and this year looks like it could be special, but people talk about paying him Top 20 money when we've never had a Top 25 finish. He needs to get paid, but this hand wringing BS about him leaving borders on pathetic. FWIW, Bill Snyder coached in the Big 12 and KSU went 71-19 from 1997 to 2003 and the Wildcats had 11 wins in six out of seven seasons at one point. Leach is a wonderful coach and probably the perfect coach for us......but he's not a guy who can say things that other WSU coaches can say. As I've said before, Leach's best season is still not as good as the best season finish for Walden, Erickson, Price or Doba. I don't want the man to leave but he's getting paid around the right money that he should right now.

I would argue that a small tweak to his contract is in order, but this $5 million and $6 million talk is silly.

Geezus - this whole thread is a bunch of nega-Cougs! First off, if you read the article (oh yeah you can't) we made 3 offers to 3 star-ish guys - for 2020.
Second, the trap we've seen before does not exist now.

It is a bit much - the shrieks of "Oh! We were 7-1 this time a year ago!" or "Recruiting traps everywhere!"
Do these people keep one eye on the sky at all times looking for that dreaded asteroid? Enjoy the fvcking season, people.

Where have you been hiding? What's your prediction for Saturday?

And go stick up for me in that stupid thread about what we REALLY should be discussing. They are picking on me.

Baker may play for Browns.... that is like going from the penthouse to the outhouse.

Youre not going to win there. They fired Bill Belichick.

Which is better, 3 seasons of $ in the NFL before youre fired.... or 15 seasons of $$$ at UO????

Cleveland is not a smart financial move. Better off waiting until Baker moves on from there lol

I don't know, there's a few guys that flopped in the NFL then went right back to college. Riley, Saban, Chip, Kiffen. I don't think any of them were really any worse off having flopped in the NFL.

And the OU coach’s name is on that list?

In the urge for more thoroughness, the name Carroll should be added.

One would hope that we learned our lesson sufficiently painfully fifteen years ago when we got a bit big for our britches. We went after the 4 and 5 star rated recruits only to end up their second or third choice. We were left with an empty bag and had to scramble for leftovers. This recruiting flop hurt us for years. CML seems too steady and level-headed to fall into that trap.
That is a good point. Those 4 star recruits we chased after didn't commit. Then WSU was left scrambling and filled the positions with players who didn't fit or didn't show up to enroll.

Consistent winning seasons will attract recruits. I am convinced that several lights out seasons of 9 or 10 wins each won't make that much difference in recruiting. It will help, but it won't gain us recruiting classes that are top heavy with 4 and 5 star recruits. WSU will continue to recruit athletic, intelligent, and coachable players that fit our system. That seems to be our keys to success.

The UW is finding this out the hard way. Going to the playoffs did not make a huge impact on their recruiting of 4 and 5 star recruits.

Carroll's is different than those others. Those others were college coaches that went to the NFL and then back to college. Carroll went from the NFL to college and back to the NFL.

While most would agree with you I think and you make some very good points, this take is mostly irrelevant. You are worth what the market will pay. Basic economics. If a school offers $6 mill and Leach is willing to chase the $$ WSU has two choices at that point. Decide he’s worth $6 mil and pony up or decide he isn’t and go another direction. Simple as that. And the way the coaching carousel goes and salaries skyrocket for accomplished coaches, that choice will probably come sooner rather than later.

The thing is....why do you think his market value is $6 million? When Currie reportedly offered that to Leach, the admins at Tennessee said, "WTF, dude!" and fired his dumb a$$ for thinking that it was a good idea.
