Sun Bowl vs Miami.....yuck

Better for the program. A better bowl game experience for the players. Bad destination for the fans.

We were 1-3 with a dead man walking head coach. I'm excited for this game. Miami is a good team. Won 5 of their last 6, including a win at ACC champion Pitt. This is a tough matchup for us.

Lackluster in some ways (especially in-person attendance prospects) but pretty good for the reasons DGib outlined. I also like the name value / difficulty ratio a lot more than playing Utah State again in the LA Bowl. Holiday Bowl vs. NC State would have been nice, admittedly, but no surprise at all they went with UCLA.

I also need a new Sun Bowl T-shirt.

This is a great bowl for us for the situation we are in:

Dec 31st - plenty of time to hire new staff, game plan, organize recruitment

Texas - Gives our 3 new Texas Coaches time to comb their connections & recruit

Miami - Big Name but beatable opposition

CBS - National Eyeballs

At the end of the day, as mentioned above, this is a great bowl game for our program. If you haven't gone before, the game itself isn't terrible. The fans show up for the first half and they do a good job of supporting the team on their side of the field. If you can't make it, consider donating a ticket to a soldier.....they have a program for that.

I actually had a fair amount of fun shooting pool in a dive bar on Christmas night in 2015 with some random fellow Cougs, but it is by far the lamest destination I've been to when it comes to night life. For whatever reason, there wasn't any organized Coug gathering that I could find on Christmas night. Maybe it will be better this year.

great for the Cougs/program, lousy for fans.

Sorry, but I'm just not going to spend the same amount it costs to fly to Europe to go to El Paso.

My wife really wanted to go but I didn't want to and she did some planning just in case that I changed my mind. If we had gone, we would have flown to Phoenix and spent a day or so there, drove to El Paso the night before the game (6 hour drive)....watch the game and drive back to Phoenix. Spend another day in Phoenix doing things before heading home.

I'd recommend that to anyone thinking about going to El Paso. More windshield time but less time in that craphole and less chances to get stuck at DFW (happened to me on both trips).

Of course it was pre-ordained that the Sun Bowl was the destination. Mike Price lead the Cougars to the 2001 Sun Bowl. Mike Leach lead the Cougars to the 2015 Sun Bowl. Jake Dickert lead the Cougars to the 2021 Sun Bowl. All successful WSU head coaches lead a team to the Sun Bowl.

Does it really though? El Paso is a lot closer to major metropolitan areas in New Mexico and Arizona than it is in Texas.

266 - Albuquerque
318 - Tucson
431 - Phoenix
551 - San Antonio
635 - Dallas
745 - Houston

Odessa and Midland are reasonably close (260 some miles)......think Friday Night Lights. Plus, it's a short flight to Dallas.

Midland's high school football stadium.

The first Sun Bowl on 01 a buddy and went to the Seattle Bowl (GA Tech vs Stanford) on the 27th. The next day we flew to San Antonio. Went to the Alamo Bowl (Iowa vs Texas Tech) on the 29th. Drove to El Paso the Next Day. Watched the Sun Bowl on the 31st. Drove back to San Antonio and flew back on the 1st. It was a fun trip.

Still have the photo of my teen-age daughter standing next to Rien Long on the field following Purdue win.
No photos, but great memories of Miami win w/my nephew.
I’ll be there for our 3rd Sun Bowl win too.
Would have preferred LV (hometown),but not gonna bitch about El Paso which I guess is a requirement.

This is better than other possibilities. We get the full two weeks of bowl prep, coaches get time to recruit then focus on the bowl. Players get to focus on finals.
Good call. Selfishly it’s not better for me cuz I’m not gonna make the trip where I would have done LV but hope the team gets the most out of it. Would love to have been a fly on the wall for Vegas selection discussion. I don’t think there’s a doubt we would have shown up and shown out way more than ASU or UCLA but maybe tv market plays a bigger role. Oh well.

That stadium is crazy. I'm surprised that you can see soccer lines on it. Didn't realize they played soccer in Texas.

Here's what our kids play on. And it is the nicest field in the state... including the Griz and Cats fields. Holds a whopping 2,000 people

Betting that ours is in a more picturesque setting, though.

Wait until you see the surface at the new Ellensburg stadium.....

10am MST start, 9am PST, noon EST. Seems to advantage Miami.

And disfavor my ability to medicate myself during the game. Well, Caesars it is, and then a nap.

Both teams will be there a few days so I don’t think anyone has an advantage. Weird deal though that this game starts 10am MST. It always this way for sun?

Manny just got fired, looks like Miami is looking to Oregon for their next coach.

It literally isn't. Its the last bowl game in the pecking order that was forced to take WSU.

Only the LA Bowl was further down the list, but the Sun Bowl was contractually obligated to pick us. So there was no scenario for us to fall further than we did.

At first I was thinking this was another no-win situation: if you win, you were supposed to, as the team is in turmoil with a new coach, and if you lose, you couldn't get it done to a team in turmoil with a new coach.

But with our rollercoaster season, maybe this evens things up! What's the line, anyway?

Last I saw WSU +1.5

Well, that should get better for us with Cristobal at the helm. Apparently he's one hell of a recruiter, but a terrible coach. :p

I'd be a little surprised of Cristobal is there. Most new head coaches spend their time recruiting and getting their program set up for next year. Mark Richt was hired by Miami on December 4th, 2015 but they let their interim coach handle the Sun Bowl that year.

We were introduced to Richt on a call during the game that lasted what felt like 15 minutes.

He might be and give insight on what we do, I mean I wouldn’t call that cheating but the old Miami would do anything to win. 😂
