This Offense Blows

how many picks are we gonna throw in the endzone this yr?

For as much talk about JDL...this is garbage

Cam Ward is an enigma on the field. Think he’s been spoiled in the sense his talent allowed him to make those plays whenever he please. Combined with NIL and people telling him he’s a god, he’s a bit too comfortable being a bit of a hero and wild with the ball. When he steps up and uses the pocket and reads the progression he matches that talent. When he runs around and just hucks balls off his back foot he gets punished by P5 defenders. Hoping he can grow here soon and accept the changes between FCS and FBS talent. He can be great but oscillates between disciplined and way way too cocky.

Yeah, but the NFL will clean that up. We are seeing the evolution of 1st round Cam

If he ever cleans up the bonehead plays he’s gonna be a helluva college QB. Can’t throw picks that are that easy though.

certainly night and day between weeks 1/2 to now.

If Ward doesn’t clean up his game, you are looking at UDFA Cam. He’s got janky mechanics, he repeatedly makes boneheaded turnovers, he has a bad habit of rolling backwards out of the pocket which forces him to lose visual contact downfield and he plays with an arrogance that exceeds his talent.

I say all that but I do see potential. He could be great for us and be an NFL stud, but the negatives are so significant that nobody is drafting him as things stand.

If he doesn’t get rid of the constant sidearm throw, he’ll never get a shot. Mahomes throws sidearm when he needs to, but he also throws it properly when he should. Cam has a lot of work to do. I still like the potential but if we had decent backup, I would have stuck his ass on the bench after the second pick amd let him reflect on his future.

He's a sophomore playing his first FBS football. Not to discount any of your concerns or observations– they are completely valid– but I'd be shocked if he doesn't improve significantly as he gains more experience. In a strange way, it could be a good thing that he has some things to work on. If he was closer to a finished product, the Cougars might not have him for more than a single year.

Glad Cougar

How many times does an OC need to produce a top 10 offense at the P5 level before you deem him ready for P5 football?

It’s not about that. It’s about having a rhythm with your play calls, timing of formations and angles, knowing your personnel and the defenses weaknesses.

Top 10 has zero to do with it. So to answer your question directly, 0.

Your turn, how many top ten offenses at the Power 5 level has Morris called without Patrick Mahomes at qb? And what was the record of those teams?

I saw Cam throw his three best passes of the season today, and a couple of his worst. Three steps forward, two back.

This offense has incrementally improved each week.

I also think the red zone offense is better than in past years. We've had more creative play calling than under leach. Last week we had a read-option with Ward for a TD, a toss- hand off to Ferral and yesterday a toss- to the tight-end. Feeling a little more confident when we get a first and goal inside the 10 these days. That's all I have to say about that.

Morris seems to have missed the Leach chapter on no “trick plays” ever. Hopefully he’s saving a few for the AC.

Apparently for you I needed to append and addendum to that statement: without throwing another pick in the end zone.
Vertical passes are high risk/high reward. It's fun when Cam connects on his shots down field. Not so much when he doesn't. Cal did a good job of mixing up their D but Cam figured out what he was being given and ended up taking advantage in the 4th.

All of that is true, but the problem is that his play has been the safe through his first 5 FCS games. He hasn’t fixed the things that were problems in game 1. He’s gotten a little more comfortable with receivers that are new to him, but adding Ferrell to the mix gave him a security blanket that he looks for far too often.

In addition to the mechanics issues mentioned, and the problem scrambling backward, he generally does a poor job with progressions. He knows who he wants to throw to before the snap, and looks immediately for that receiver - locked in. He doesn’t break off until he starts scrambling. His field vision is not good.

If he doesn’t get those things fixed, his ceiling will not be high. He won’t even be a UDFA as is.

His picks were late throws over the middle. His deep completions were on schedule throws outside to receivers that were single covered. From a risk reward standpoint there’s no comparisons. You take those one on one shots all day and you don’t make those late throws over the middle ever, unless it’s 4th down/late game desperation time.

I think we would all trade a few less trick plays for the offense consistently executing their base plays. This is more Dickert than Morris though. He's hung up on the idea of being multiple and giving teams a lot to prepare for on film. While the offense is likely giving DC's fits during prep all that is for not if we beat ourselves with sloppy execution.

In all seriousness, we are running an option offense at the moment. If we get consistent in our execution we are going to be tough to stop. If we can keep Cam healthy we should continue to get better each week.

I disagree.

Seam routes aren't high risk high reward. Arrow routes aren't high risk high reward. 4 verts where you hit the window at 12 yds isn't high risk high reward.

There are lots of vertical routes that aren't just long bombs.
