The Leach years drew pretty well for WSU (by WSU standards) despite declining attendance across college football.
Rolo 1 - no fans allowed.
Rolo/Dickert year 2 - pretty crappy attendance. I’m sure that was somewhat driven by fear of Covid, pissed off about mandates etc. but also fans coming up with better ways to spend there Saturdays they discovered in 2020.

The schedule is set up pretty well for attendance with a game with Idaho on usually poorly attended Labor Day, a great kickoff time for CSU, Oregon is Oregon and the Apple Cup at home. The Cal game is a great weekend for Homecoming. The only iffy games are ASU in November (especially if the wheels starting coming off) and Utah on a Thursday night.

Despite all that, I think we’ll see a lingering effect of people finding other things to do and a general disgust with major college football - NIL, unlimited transfers, conferences poaching legacy members etc. I don‘t expect to see Paul Wulf attendance but well below the Leach peak.

I'm anticipating this will be a tough year. Lots of coaching and player turnover. Obviously not great for attendance.

The front loaded home September schedule is going to lead to a lot of peaks and valleys.

  • Idaho game will be around 25K
  • Colorado State will be poorly attended due to the Oregon home game the following week 23K
  • Oregon will be near capacity if not sold out
  • Cal will be moderately to poorly attended unless we happen to beat Oregon 27-30K
  • Utah on Thursday in late October will be a disaster. 25K (fewer than that in the stands)
  • ASU in the last home game before Apple Cup spells trouble, but naming it parents weekend was a solid move 33K
  • Apple Cup near capacity or sold out
4 September home games and 3 in a row is a mixed bag. We take advantage of better weather, but consecutive home games always thins the crowds.

We bought our tickets for the CSU game and I am looking forward to that! I am hoping to be able to attend a game in October but it really depends on the times for those games.

There's only one October home game and it's on a Thursday.

I want to go more but flying in to Spokane/hotel and drive to Pullman is not cheap every week.

I'm a touch more optimistic than you guys, apparently.

IF (a big if, but not impossible) we beat Wisconsin, we'll add another 7-8K fans per game over what we might have otherwise had for the next several games.

I understand Patrol's assumption that CSU will be poorly attended due to being followed immediately by the Oregon game, but I expect a lot more than 23K. I'm thinking 27-28K; more like 34-35K if we beat Wisconsin.

Cal's attendance will depend upon how we are doing at that point in the season. They are the "fair weather fan" game on this year's schedule. If we beat Wisconsin and Oregon, we'll be well over 30K fans. If we beat one of the two, we'll be close to 30K (29K sounds right). If we lose both, then Cal will be the poorest attendance of the year...less than CSU. Right down there with the Utah Thursday night game.

Utah is a Thursday night...normally not a good attendance situation. But if Utah is doing well (which appears likely) and we are pretty respectable, then that game will not be the normal cold weather Thursday night attendance bust. There 26 days without a home game between Cal and Utah. The better we are playing, the better the attendance will be. Regardless of what is announced for tickets sold, if we are doing badly and Utah is not doing well, we will be sub-25K; maybe no more than 20K actual butts in the seats. But if we are winning and Utah is winning? Over 30K is realistic.

That's certainly possible, and I hope it plays out that way. One of the things that kills us when we have 4 home games in a month is that the majority of our traveling fans are forced to pick the games they're going to attend in advance of the season. Labor Day games always stink. I hope 5K Idaho fans show up, but that's not likely. CSU and especially Cal are the games where our performance will dictate the crowd. Losing to Wisconsin won't necessarily diminish the CSU attendance if we're competitive, but losing to both Wisconsin and Oregon will absolutely crush the Cal attendance.

Let's not even discuss what will happen to the Cal attendance if we lose to CSU and Oregon, which isn't by any means out of the realm of possibility. I have CSU circled as our "better be careful" game. Their new coach Norvell has brought in a ton of new players, most of whom are from his old team, Nevada. This game has Utah State 2021 written all over it.

The Mountain West Wire is picking CSU over us, FWIW.

One think that’s being overlooked is that CSU, Oregon, and Cal are on consecutive weeks. When we have 3 straight home games, a lot of people pick 2.
Most will pick oregon.

CSU is a bit of a novel opponent, although not one I think anyone is clamoring for. But it’s early season, and we probably won’t really know much about what this team is yet. Weather will likely be good.

Cal attendance usually isn’t great. We’ll be getting a better idea about the team by then, and october 1 weather is less reliable. The fact that it’s a conference game is the only real point in its favor…but it’s Cal.

My thinking is that unless we’re flying pretty high at that point, Cal attendance is down, probably slightly less than CSU. If we’re 3-1 or 4-0 and fun to watch, maybe we stay in the 30K ballpark. Anything less and we’re closer to 24-25 that week.

1) Bought season tix for the first time in a few years. Had many choices of 2 together in section 6 undercover. Historically those have been hard to come by - so not sure that bodes well for sales overall.

2) It’s definitely “front loaded” so we are choosing to skip CSU (gave to friends) but attend all others through Cal. Brilliant that they made it homecoming, imo.

3) ASU will do well because of parents weekend. Another good move.

4) Utah attendance will surprise IF we surprise. I think we will.

5) If (yes I know, it’s maybe a 5% chance!) Oregon can upset Georgia and we upset Wisconsin we will have a College Gameday chance. That weekend has no games that would match ~#3 at ~#15. Especially since the last visit was so epic.

As always, win and attendance follows. This is at least a 6 win team with an upside to 9. Go Cougs!

I don't see us getting a college game day even in your scenario. I think the 2018 one was a one shot deal.

Cal is homecoming. That should help.

When the Cougs are in the Pac-10 or (worst-case scenario) Big 12, we'll see if the Colorado State wiseguy is still smirking

Probably right. Take a look at that weeks matchups though. Only Arkansas v A&M even comes close, and I’m guessing they will be at College Station the week prior for Miami so back to back A&M is weird. Of course, if Oregon loses to Georgia by the 18 points Vegas says they will it’s all moot anyway. Can a guy hope? 😂

Wow. There’s some cherry picking of completely irrelevant facts.

And the second one is dubious…I don’t think that AC win was the biggest of the Wulff era. I’d probably go with the ASU game for that.

Decent pre-season troll. 2008 Crapple Cup definitely the top one for the Waldenites.

Probably 3 candidates besides the 2008 Crapple Cup.

SMU - miraculous finish kept them from being 0-12- but even at 0-12 with Sterk still there don't think the CPW cult could've been removed. Would've doubled down on blaming Doba. Perhaps the AD would have requested a raid ("search") of Doba's house?

ASU - late season game vs a warm weather team that pretty much quit on Uncle Dennis who left at end of year.

Oregon State - looked like a football team from start (CJ Mizell's dirty hit) to finish. On the road, versus a team who went to a bowl game and a coach who wasn't fired (or burnt out) and it wasn't a miraculous finish either.

Even as I have grown cynical of college football due to the corruption and cheating that is widespread, I'm still excited about this football season and plan to go to two or maybe three home games (most of the time I go to just one home game). It is really easy to just stay at home and watch it on TV.

I'd like to see us play Arizona and deLaura. That should be an interesting game (and Arizona in November, which I've done twice in the last several years, is always a good destination).

This team is going to do well. I'm not sure how well, but I have a good feeling (barring significant injuries), that we will overperform. We'll see...

I don't care what any one will ever say about Coach Wulff or when our team became it's worst ever...

Beating the fuskies to make them go 0 and 12... doing it with 100% last second desperation...

That 2008 Apple Cup will forever be one of the greatest memories of my entire life.

How, thank you for your last paragraph. "Overperform". That would be a great descriptor for this season. And I am with you on that.

Were you there at Martin to witness it?

Yes. Holding my 5 month old son and crying with joy.

That's awesome.

Funny that some UW fans I've interacted with tried to minimize the game because "our team was horrible." No, it counted. They all count. We were a bad team many times when we played UW. No UW fan let us off the hook when we lost and said "oh...that game doesn't really count."

Where is HHusky when I want to rile him up. 🤔 😀

Quick look at his profile shows he hasn't been around since November of last year.
He usually pops up around the AC and when we have a shit show like the Rolo mess.

Speaking of regulars...what happened to YakiCoug?

Wulff was in year #1. YEAR #1 OF REAL DIVISION 1 FOOTBALL and we had no depth, hoards of injuries, the worst Offensive Strategy ever put together... a Defensive Strategy that looked like they planned for flag football.

fuw had Willingham in his 3rd year. He'd coached at Stanford and Notre Dame. They had their 4 star players. They had/have the supposed history that they expect people to worship and recognize. Big City. Easy Travel. Enough money to buy small countries.

Guess what fuskies? You were the worst of the worst. That season... losing the Apple Cup the way you did...

People can try to bring up how bad things were at WSU, but having the fuskies experience that season and that Apple Cup will ALWAYS be one of my favorite times!

Pretty much banned for life, I think. Others would know better than I. I think he posted personal information about another poster on here or something like that. Not sure, not my circus, not my monkeys....

Crapple Cup was just 0-11 for the UW. They still had to go lose to Cal the next week to make it a perfect season. The last perfect season in the Pac 12.

The best part of 0-12 was that Jim Owens, Don James, Mike Lude, William Gerberding, Herb Mead, Ron Crockett, Dick Baird, Softy Mahler and Hugh Millen were alive to see the 2008 season.

Too bad we didn't boat race them, like the majority did!

Disagree a little... I could feel their hope for a win at the Apple Cup.

We sucked out their souls with that Victory

Yaki was a high school math teacher at a Yakima public HS. I think he may not be around anymore. Yes....he attacked several posters on this board and was extremly toxic. Banned a few times....but in the end....I don't think he's around any longer.

Sad deal.

Yaki Coug and Loyal Coug loved the Cougs for a long time and weren't afraid to let others know it.

Maybe Scott Hood gives both of them a second chance at some point.

I can certainly understand getting frustrated at, for example, CougEd. He deflects with questions (as a debate tactic) when cornered and doesn't think logically or rationally. It's like debating with someone whose mind is fried on meth. 😀
