Thoughts on Jim Sterk?

Sterk’s mistake was allowing there to be a search committee.

Sterk hired Doba without a search.
Sterk simply wasn't a football AD.
Never was at a football school.
Or understood the potential problem with bringing back layabout alums to coach (wont recruit...see Doba's staff)

And there lies the problem. Football drives the bus. How can you hire someone that doesnt KNOW football and how to build it and support it???

It isnt a long list if ADs that get to hire 2 football coaches. No way was Sterk gonna get a third.

Jim Walden did an initial Claude Rains about the Doba firetirement. Then led the initial press offensive against Mike Price (who Jim Sterk also didnt want back). Then started campaigning hard for a coach who a year earlier had lost to Central Washington University.

Coach Walden would say the same today.

If you ever listened to CJW on the radio or heard him speak on the rubber chicken circuit, he sticks to his guns come hell or high water.

I do think he'd be happy with CML's success even though he remains upset about Coach Wulff's exit.

The problem with "Daddy Ball" like Walden was practicing it with Cougar football is when the kid (Wulff) sucks and the parent (Walden) flat out cant admit it.

The problem with "Daddy Ball" like Walden was practicing it with Cougar football is when the kid (Wulff) sucks and the parent (Walden) flat out cant admit it.

Those guys were absolute cancers to the program. It's fair and appropriate to take a red pill of sorts on them and re-examine the history of Walden.

Fact is Walden had so little success in his time here, he felt the need to blame WSU for his failings rather than taking responsibility. He did have his moments (Holiday Bowl and some Apple Cups) but he was able to sell WSU as the reason he didn't win more. This lowered the bar on expectations for the next several decades. The message was always "we are outnumbered and out gunned, we'll mostly lose, but we'll surprise you occasionally!"

He didn't generate a fanbase of rabid diehards who considered a gift to the CAF each month as vital as the power bill. Walden told the fanbase to friendzone the Cougs. He told us we shouldn't get too emotionally invested because we'd just get disappointed.
