In no particular order:

- It was nice to watch the Cougs play football!
- If 32 guys are "unavailable", then I'm guessing that more than 20 are quarantined. We certainly don't have 5 injured safeties (with a walk on playing...and by the way, playing rather well).
- The O line has to feel good. Their adjustments through the game, and improved concentration, were great to watch. A different unit at the end of the game than at the start. That is not a totally unusual thing for the first game, but the circumstances made for a greater progression through one game than I am used to seeing....
- Dion. What a great game when a kid gets a chance.
- Playing out every...single...play. No quit. No slowing. Downfield blocking. Multiple blocks from the same people as JdL scrambles. On the other side, pursuit. Sometimes a bit of over-pursuit, but can't be too surprised in the first game. D line did not come as far in this game as the O line, but that is because they started better.
- Speaking of the D line, that is the single best D line performance by the Cougs that I've seen in years. I have no idea how much that says about the OSU O line, vs. where we are, but our front 6 did all we could ask in game 1 with a new system and limited implementation time.
- Coach spoke about the unit conversations after every series in his post game. WR's telling the O line what they were seeing was an interesting comment. Rolo credited much of the progress during the game on those conversations.
- Nice punting. Been a while since one of our punters could find the sideline inside the 10.
- Both Kick & punt return blocking is a work in progress. Again, not a surprise in the first game. I'm expecting better blocking and fewer fair catches next game.
- JdL is going to be special, so long as he avoids injury.
- We won the field position battle decisively, and IMHO that was the most important factor in the win.

Finally, two key thoughts:

1.) it is pretty obvious that we have a solid coaching staff. They climbed a series of mountains at a pretty brisk pace. You know that neither the O nor the D was using anything like a full play book. Based on what we saw yesterday, I'm expecting that more wrinkles will be added every week. This team will be HARD for other coaching staffs to prepare against...
2.) thank you to Mike Leach for leaving a reasonably well stocked cupboard, to go with some key recruiting pick ups by the new staff. I repeat: Rolo said 32 kids were "unavailable". Counting the non-scholly kids, that is almost 1/3 of the team. A lot of 2's were playing as 1's and a walk-on safety got a LOT of PT. Sure, we were playing OSU. But at no time did our team look outclassed vis a vis athleticism. And sure, there were some mistakes...but nothing like I would have expected with 1/3 of the team out. We can stop bitching about Leach. He left us more depth than we realized.

Agree with all that you wrote. It seemed there was a full game of effort + energy that I didn't expect. Kids played very hard and with a lot of enthusiasm, even when OSU made their comeback....Cougs had a good response.

Individually, I will point to a couple of players although I"m sure to miss several. The obvious ones– de Laura, McIntosh, Harris– were huge in this game. I did not expect such a big contribution as we got from Brennan Jackson and Amir Crowder. Gebbia often had to throw much earlier than he wanted to....and usually to the shorter routes. Great team pursuit and better tackling than we've seen in a couple of years. I thought Hector was really good considering how little time he's had in the program. You can see he really isn't a walkon even though no schollie is available at this time. And finally, Dillon Sherman on special teams had a big impact. A couple of good individual tackles and the tipped punt were huge. (Can't forget the kickers, Oscar and Blake!)

I had posted elsewhere that my OSU insider friend thought the Beavs would be sneaky good this year. So I'd like to think most of the win is due to the Cougars' play. He may have overestimated his team, but I still thought our team played well.

Glad Cougar

Nice analysis, crazy. One thing I would as a side note....
My daughter confirmed that "a bunch" of players were left behind due to being quarantined because they "traveled outside of Pullman" this week.

Another thought is it is really nice to see a more balanced offense with McIntosh getting a lot touches. I hope Borghi can come back this year because we would have a great one-two punch.

The defense played fast and wasn’t thinking too much. Great to see w a new coach. Lots of wrinkles in the defense players coming from different spots but seldom were guys out of place or wandering in no mans land.

guys were having fun!

regarding the 2nd half defense, I’m gonna give some credit to OSU. That QB is good and he caught fire. He was still under fire and throwing into a lot of tight windows he was just making plays. And Jefferson is a load. I’m not worried about the D, they are gonna be a solid unit.

Certainly agree with all of the above.
Liked how they responded the couple of times that OSU got momentum.
Overall, very very solid considering all of the circumstances.
Really is a credit to the coaching staff, when you think about how one-dimensional we have been in the past, and the gapping holes we have seen early in some recent and not so recent seasons. I just remember what an adventure special teams use to be, and how we use to struggle to close out games when we had a lead....

Rolo talked about bringing Ohana to Pullman, and from his presser and the way guys all celebrated together on the field, I feel like he succeeded in doing so. I also feel like it will take them a long way towards being successful over the next 4 years

Agree with your overall message, but I disagree on Gebbia. I think he sucks. He can make routine, play-action throws, benefitting from the defensive focus on Jefferson, but that’s it.

He can’t throw on the run at all. AT ALL. He short arms a lot of throws. He doesn’t run well, and he has stiff shoulder and hip flexibility.

We won’t face any QBs worse than him.

it’s too early but we may have just won the Pac-12’s tallest midget contest.

I was telling my daughter that last night.

On the Gebbia comments, he was terrible in the first half, but he threw some absolute dimes in the second half. Either our defense sucks or he's not as bad as people are saying. I'd like to think he isn't all that bad....

And he doesn't have a chin.

Let me reshuffle my comments. I’m not saying that Oregon State’s offense will be the worst we’ll face. They have an elite running back and a scheme that knows how to exploit teams who cheat their run defense.

Gebbia just looks like a dinosaur at the QB position. A mid-level Big 10 QB.

We can revisit this later. He struggled early but got into a big time rythm. Using play action is part of that and J Smith is a good offensive mind and QB coach. Look what he did with Lutton. I’m not saying he’s that physically gifted but he was a 4* talent and is getting coached up at OSU. He will end up being a damn good QB IMO, and he gets at least another year of handing the ball to Jefferson. Hard to say how good OSU is, but I’m comfortable saying the defense is light years better at all three levels.

I think it’s way too early to make conclusions after one game. I’ve seen HUGE swings week to week thus far in college football. Teams that look sharp one week are getting boat raced the next.

Plenty of positives from last night's game. Ayden Hector is as good as any recruit we've landed in the past 20 years. There needs to be a ban on calling him a "walk-on". Guy was all over the field on the first half. I wonder if Tyrese Ross and Chad Davis got Wally Pipped.

I'm inclined to say that win was more about OSU than anything else. Not only did Smith not have his team ready to play, but his management of the 4th quarter left a lot to desire. Seriously. Burning your last timeout after you can't get your field goal unit onto the field after clocking it? They've been talking about Smith changing the culture in Corvallis since he arrived but he might be a downgrade from Anderson.

The best news is we should get a bunch of players back and available for future weeks. Unfortunately, OSU will probably be by far our easiest opponent this year.

We don’t know that either (OSU will be the easiest opponent). Maybe jury is still out on Smith as a head coach but he can coach QBs and does good things with his offense. Has a proven track record including last year. That said, I will say after one game I’m more confident about the defense than I am the offense, when looking at comparisons to last year. The offense will assuredly have a game where they turn the ball over 4 times and look lost. With a freshman QB and a new coach/scheme that’s a given.

Hector was a steal for us. Dude is legit he balled out yesterday. Justus Rodgers continues to take horrible angles, I hope Travion Brown replaces him in the middle sooner rather than later. Our orange haired receiver, don't know why I can't remember his name looked like he got banged up, can't afford to lose him, hoping the injury was minor. DMac had a hell of a game, A HELL OF A GAME. We will need him to keep contributing at that level if Max is out for a considerable amount of time. Thought rangy number 0 was P. Nunn at first but it appears it is the JC CB transfer, dude is long. Ron Stone is a very good football player. D.Sherman had a nice game; that pass deflection he had while covering the Tight End he had to be 25 yds back in his drop...had some great plays on Special teams as well. Need to get the ball in T. Harris's hands as much as possible. Rolo know this, the 44 yd run to seal the deal was creative play calling at its finest. Renard Bell makes me smile. JdL is going to be special. Dude has swag and moxie. Fun game to watch. Looking forward to seeing what we can do next week with Ducks.

Yeah 0 was all over the place on defense. The corners and safety’s closed HARD when balls were caught made sure tackles, and didn’t allow much YAC at all. That alone is a complete 180 from last year.

Agree on Hector's capability. But I love to claim walk on status in a good performer, if true. Just makes me feel good! ;)

As for our easiest opponent...Did you watch Stanford yesterday? And neither Kal nor UW have had a chance to show us anything. Rolo passed the challenging coaching environment test. How will Jimmy Lake do? Remains to be seen. If we are lucky, UW will only have one game in before we play them. And then there is Oregon, the original schizo team. Who knows which group of Ducks will show up for our game?

No kidding, totally agree regarding Hector~!

"Ayden Hector received a scholarship offer from every school in the Pac-12, along with offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Nebraska, Penn State and Wisconsin".

Super cool~!

Missed the game (had other stuff going) but watched some highlights later. The biggest pleasant surprises were McIntosh (though I knew he could play, it was just nice to see an effective running game) and the pass rush, which wasn't overwhelming but it was absolutely good enough. Oregon will tell us more about how we handle the running game, but the defense is SO much better. Man the coaching was bad last season on that side of the ball in particular.

Crowder, Hobbs, and Brennan Jackson and Stone all looked solid up front. Rodgers must have got hurt. Taylor didnt play much. DL will need to play even better vs Oregon.

Jackson and Calvin both dropped a few balls. Loved the play and blocking schemes of our OL. We suddenly have a modern offense. Perfect offensive fit for De Laura. Couple roll outs where instead of passing it for 6 yards Id like to see him run and slide for 10. Unbelievable talent. Gonna be a blast t

Taylor got the first sack of the game. Rodgers got dinged up late.

The personnel are there for the scheme change. Adding Chau, Watson and Hector will really pay dividends in the future.

So we could have 2 of those for 2025 season and Watson for the 2022?
