For the few that still harbor a grudge against Bennett for leaving WSU after 6 years (3 as head coach) and want him to fail at UVA, see article below. Not many coaches are willing to do this:

Virginia coach Tony Bennett declined to take a raise while extending his contract by another year.

The Cavaliers announced the extension Monday, saying Bennett asked for the money to be used to pay his staff more and for improvements to both his program as well as other Virginia teams.

"[My wife] Laurel and I are in a great spot, and in the past I've had increases in my contract," Bennett said in the news release. "We just feel a great peace about where we're at, all that's taken place, and how we feel about this athletic department and this community and this school. I love being at UVA.

"... I have more than enough, and if there are ways that this can help out the athletic department, the other programs and coaches, by not tying up so much [in men's basketball], that's my desire."

Following negotiations with athletic director Carla Williams, Bennett's deal now runs through the 2025-26 season. According to the USA Today coaching database, Bennett made $4.15 million last season, which included a $1 million longevity payment due to him in March.

"Tony's decision -- to turn down a well-deserved raise and instead invest in his players and UVA athletics more broadly -- tells you everything you need to know about him as a leader and as a human being," university president Jim Ryan said. "Tony is one of the most selfless people I've ever met, and this is just the latest example."

Virginia is coming off its first national title last season. Bennett has coached the Cavaliers since 2009-10, reaching the NCAA tournament seven times, including each of the past six seasons.

I haven't met anyone either, but I know there's at least one person on this board who has consistently rooted against him. (HINT: He's no fan of our new coach either.)

Back in the day Hoops Coug and some others repeatedly opined that TB's recruiting w/o his Dad was on the decline and he would never make it at Virginia. In my opinion, this ludicrous view, relentlessly prattled forth like gospel, is probably why we don't see posts by "HoopsCoug" anymore.

I was one who felt our recruiting was dropping off, although I never blamed it on Tony, nor did I think he would fail at Virginia. Rather I saw the difficulty of recruiting to Pullman as one of the reasons Tony left

I felt Tony's initial recruiting was a product of his lack of experience with Dick's recruiting philosophy. I think he had found his own version of it and recruiting had turned around before he departed.

I disagree a bit with Ava on why Tony left. WSU was a means to and end and we definitely benefited from the deal. Still,Tony had a foot out the door from day 1. His wife hated Pullman and wanted to raise their children in the south. Tony was also transparent on a number of occasions about the type of program he wanted to lead and that simply wasn't WSU. I don't think that means it was an easy decision for him to leave but UVA checked all the boxes.

Coaching is a really tough profession and given the environment you have to strike while the "iron is hot" so to speak and that's all he did in moving on. If he had stayed it might have been for another 3 years before he saw the same opportunity presented by UVA. Not only do I not begrudge him but I wish him success. I just wish he had been able to convince Smith to come to Pullman the first time around!
