So, a casino executive offered up $100k to keep the UNLV QB there and UNLV said, "Nope, we won't be working with that f#cker again" or words to that effect.

The thing is, the guy had 318 yards passing through three games. UNLV isn't playing well because of him. If our starting QB was averaging 106 yards per game, we'd be losing our flipping minds no matter what our record was. I don't blame UNLV for telling the guy to take a hike.

He's a risk for any program. If the team does well, he might come out and demand more money.

On top of that, he's a career 57% passer. In 3 games at the FBS level, he was below 50%. He's got a 4:1 TD:INT ratio, but he's never thrown more than 266 passes or 2,500 yards in a season. He gets sacked roughly once per 10 attempts, and through his career at Holy Cross, he ran about as much as he threw (in 2023, he had 4 games with 20+ carries, 5 games with 100+ rushing yards. They went 1-4 in those games.). His production fell off from 2022 to 2023, and his team went 2-0 when he was out with an injury, but was only 5-4 with him as the starter.

Doesn't look to me like he's worth the money

Good on both the booster and UNLV. Wonder if there was a team vote involved.

So here's a hypothetical: If the Much-loved Loyal says he's leaving WW for another board, will there be a big WW donor or a grassroots groundswell to raise funds to get me to stay? :)

It’s pretty obvious his agent has secured a deal before this all went down. Kid can play and coaches don’t want to get fired.

He will be a front page story no matter where he goes. Sucks but, that’s the truth.

At least you'll have new people to talk to....;)

Blindly back the institution over the kid who got screwed?

Hate the game not the player.

It’s hard to hate the game and not the player. Hold outs are common in professional sports, that was the one attractive thing about college sports, not something you had to deal with. And unfortunately, now with NIL, there will be many more like him in the future.

I haven’t seen him play, according to his stats, looks like he can run, and passing isn’t a strength. So his future options will be limited due to perceived skill set, and he’ll get labeled with an attitude fairly or unfairly.

Plus his Dad is in the news over this. As a parent I get a father wanting to protect and support your Son 100%. However it’s best to leave the story with the player and his agent.

As a kid, an employer offers you $100,000 to come work for them, you show up, work and get stiffed.

“Thank you, Sir! May I have another??”

Yeah, nah.

UNLV didn’t offer it, some unnamed assistant coach supposedly did. If we’re putting this in employment terms, this isn’t the employer making an offer. It’s not even the manager doing it. It’s more like getting an offer from the shift supervisor- he’s got no authority to make offers or to implement it. And, if it’s not in writing, it didn’t happen.

That is the problem with NIL. There is no contract. It is based on someone's word .

The kid is in a bad position . Damn if you damn if you don't.

I have to believe an offer was made. So if he stays he doesnt get his money. But because he left when he did, he will be seen as a problem, a quitter and will he do it again.

They need to clean ip NIL and look at an NFL model where there are guardrails. An NIL cap. Two or three players can be franchised and if say Cam Ward was franchised before 2023 and he goes to Miami, WSU gets comped into their NIL funds for developing Miami's QB

There are zero “guardrails” on NIL in the NFL.

Zip,zero,nada.

There is a collective bargaining agreement that covers employee compensation, working conditions, grievance resolution, etc. of NFL employment, but any outside compensation a player earns on his own for appearing in a Downey commercial or Movie is not subject to any regulation by the NFL, nor should it be.

Agreed ... the guardrails come in the form of tge portal which is affected by NIL. And let us not pretend they are getting paid based on name image or likeness. John Mateer xoming out of high school didnt have a name inage or likeness .

And someone like Cam Ward isn't bringing money into the university because name image or likeness .

Why would any school "officially" offer this kid $100k when looking at his high school stats? He was mediocre at best. And is UNLV actually in the market to hand out $100k NIL deals? What's their collective look like?

I mean if they took the word of an assistant then shame on them.

FWIW, UNLV looked better without him. The poor kid has committed career suicide.

Well, it appears his dad is driving the ship and that's a story as old as time.
Flashbacks to QBBigBack! Long live Arkelon Hall.

Anyone else think that this situation may be like has happened in recruiting where a kid thinks he has actually been offered a scholarship while on a visit but the school actually didn't put the offer out there? I remember that happening during the past, lack of communication.

Looking at his numbers, his career was terminal anyway. If he stayed at UNLV, he had 9 games left. He's not a good passer, and it seems like the more he runs the less his teams win.

He might end up getting picked up for next season by a team that is QB needy, but it'll be a bad team. There's a pretty solid chance it'll be a bad FCS team. And it's pretty certain that they're not going to pay him anything.
