Dickert to take a bit more control over defense this weekend​

As WSU’s defense struggles, permitting 28 points to Utah State in a Nov. 9 win and 38 to New Mexico in a loss last weekend, Dickert is ready to insert himself more in the team’s defensive game-planning for the Cougs’ final two regular-season games, he said. He’s staying mindful of his role as head coach and letting defensive coordinator Jeff Schmedding call the defense, but Dickert said he’s “taking a little bit of a different approach” to end the regular season.

“I’ll probably watch a few more of the iPads on the sideline so I can see exactly what’s happening,” Dickert said, “so I can give my input, ideas, all that type of stuff.”

Dickert, who came to WSU as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2020, is a defensive-minded coach. He coached the 2020 and 2021 seasons as defensive coordinator until taking over as interim head coach in 2021, then accepting the full-time job after the season.

Late last season, as the Cougars’ defense struggled under Schmedding, Dickert shared that he was asserting himself more on that side of the ball. This year, as WSU tries to find ways to limit point production and slow mobile quarterbacks like UNM’s Devon Dampier, Dickert is doing something similar.

Especially now due to NIL... we are almost never going to have the beef up front. (Especially when we sign 30 DB's vs. 2 DT's)

Our defense doesn't hide it's aggression very well.

I'd rather have us fake and go with 31 flavors vs. so much vanilla and 1 or 2 sprinkles.

I swear we let the opposing offenses function like they are scrimmaging at practice and you'd think by the 2nd half of the season that we'd have figured it out.

Of course... as you and I would agree... history is a great measurement of who's really good and really bad.

When money is an issue, you're going to gamble more.

I can't say that Dickert is. A 10-win season with 2 Best in the US QB's under Dickert's tenure would make him look pretty damn slick.

Are you blind or delusional about the strength of this season’s schedule? It is one or the other. Sounds like both.

10 wins this season is not the accomplishment you are making it out to be. Florida State is having an awful year. They go 12-0 against this schedule. There are past WSU teams that had losing seasons that ring up 12-0 against this schedule. And herr you are banging the drum that it’s awesome? Go sit down, nose in the corner and shut the fck up.

There is no comparison that is fair for Dickfore with a past P5 coach. Willingham, Stoops, Anderson, Erickson all had to compete against significantly stronger schedules. So while you are in the corner, put your dunce hat on.
