VERBAL: WSU adds three-star CA receiver...

Well so much for fast receivers. He is a 6'0 185 with 4.53 speed. Perhaps they can make him into a Safety.

Learn the game.... He's a possession receiver, a route runner.....

I welcome my fellow Eagle Alum! Go Eagles, Go Cougs!!!

Yep. He's Cracraft, part deaux. He'll fill out the "possession" WR when Mr. Cracraft moves on. It's called depth of a position

I'll take a guy with 4.53 speed who runs good routes and has A+ hands any day of the week in this offense. Cra was easily the most reliable receiver last year, so to have a clone if him is outstanding.

.02 slower than Marquess Wilson.

Two of the best receivers in history are Jerry Rice and Steve Largent. Neither one was particularly fast. Truly elite speed can be a difference maker. But, route running, hands and body control are much more important.

Leach to this day has said that Wes welker is one of the slowest receivers he's ever had. He seemed to do alright...

you went to hs in cali? how'd you end up a coug?
Long story, but I was born in Washington and my Uncle owned an orchard in Orhello. I've lived all over California, but Washington has always been home. The small college town and location were th reasons I chose WSU. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Orange County and love SMCHS, but I was ready for a change.

Btw, it's been 22 years since I was last at SMCHS, I can only imagine how it's grown......

It is funny in that a so called possession receiver fumbles the ball and the ole ball game.no one says anything about his lack of hands. I much rather have a speedy receiver who is also quick and has good hands. learn the game ,speed kills.

the sample size of one play kind of hurts the validity of your analysis a bit here.

True. Also, catching a punt is much different that catching a pass.

I would rather have flawless athletes with no physical limitations at very spot on the field. But that's just not how it works.

True, but on that subject, Galvin was so steady with punt returns. I never doubted he would catch the ball and hold on. Maybe I missed a fumble he had at some time in his career? Anyone recall one of those?

If given the choice between Issac Whitney and Sweet, how many people would have chosen Sweet? Or better yet how many college coaches would choosen Sweet? There are some posters who may have other criteria they judge players by. His only other offer was from Hawaii. I saw him run track and he is not a speedburner and he was not a highly recruited talent.

I can't speak for everyone but as far as I'm concerned, I'd rather have burners across the board. I get what you're saying. But there is a place for these players. It creates a wrinkle for the defense that makes the DB's commit to the second tier. He fills a "green space". They know he's no speed demon but on a slant or mesh play, with hands made of glue, these kinds of players will pick up 5-8 yards at the point of catch, then yardage after completion.

So I get what you're saying ElC. But we will never get everyone we want. Hence people saying this was a good get! Seems like you're putting a whole bunch of emphasis on one player that may not be the fastest, but will do well regardless. And I truly do believe he'll do extraordinarily well, if he's as much like Cracraft as others have mentioned. Why so much negativity over this kid?

Also, you mention Sweets recruiting… I'll bet you a gazillion dollars that Sweet picks up 1 or 2 more offers. Seems like CML places spotlights on these players, and all of the sudden recruiting picks up. Would that satiate your point on that?

Actually i agree with you. I just hate to see a bunch of so called possession receivers. There is a role for these types of guys going back to a guy named Raymond Berry from the old Baltimore Colts . Now that is a name that only old farts and football nerds will know about.. He was a hell of a receiver ,pro player, and of Hall of Fame stature.

Ever wonder why these slow, possession receivers catch so many passes and do so well in Leach's offense? They run precise routes and have good hands...and in most cases, do pretty well in the "yards after catch" category. You need speed receivers to stretch the field, but I'll take a Cracraft or an Isaiah Myers (who was certainly not a speedy guy) any day to go along with the speed guys. I see no evidence that we are recruiting too many of these possession receivers.

Glad Cougar
