The cougs next take the court to host the huskies in Pullman on Jan 3. Then they go on the road to play Number 1 ranked Stanford and the potent Cal Bears . Amazingly they should still be above the .500 mark after the road swing. Coach Kami has done a marvelous job in showing they are a competitive bunch playing one of the toughest schedules in the country. Hats off to the cougs and Coach Kami who is worth every penny they pay her.

The Huskies are 8-3 on the year and appear to be much improved over last year. The cougs swept them last year 79-76 in Seattle and 94-61 in Pullman. The huskies had an overall record of 11-21 last year. They are lead by 5'10 Amber Melgoza with 13.2 pts and 5.5 rbs. Haley Van Dyke a 6'1 forward averages 10.5 pts and 7.0 rbs to pace the Huskies. I favor the cougs in this one as they have played tougher opponents on their way to a 7-5 record This game marks their first PAC 12 opponent from the Country's toughest WBB Conference.

Washington 29 cougs 24 at the half .The cougs are shooting poorly from the 3 pt line as they have been outscored 15-6 and are hitting only 28 % from the 3 pt line. that is the difference in the game so far.

Cougs down 47-40 after 3 quarters. Bobi Buckets has had a poor game notching only 6 pts and a couple of rbs.

Huskies 65 cougs 56. Molina had 15 pts but 6 to s and 4 assts. Bobi buckets had a poor game notching 10 pts on a 5-15 shooting performance with only 4 rbs and was not a factor in the game. It was a disappointing performance by the cougs..The cougs were out rebounded and outscored 14-2 at the free throw line.

UW +12 from the line was the difference. They were consistently more aggressive.

Amber is very aggressive for the UW. The uw is vastly improved. The Cougs can't just wait for Buckets to get hot.

I think our coach is working so hard to upgrade the talent. The Pac 12 is simply crazy good. She will leave no stone unturned to to find talent.

There is a player at UW that I personally emailed and got answers from the WSU staff 15 times. I said the kid is the best player in the state, she just doesn't have that "look". One of our coaches played at the rival high school as this future UW player, she made no effort to even find out about the kid.

The final straw for me is when I was at an AAU tourney summer of 2016, last viewing tourney for the coaches. I was there for my youngest daughter who was a freshman to be at the time. It was at the Gonzaga practice facility. Of all places I run into June D's husband was in the restroom at the tournament. He gives me a Go Cougs.

I asked him if I could have a minute of his time when he is done. He said he would be happy to hear what I had to say.

In the gym I informed him I have been in contact with his office, June, Ashley Grover, etc about a potential player and she is on ct 2 warming up. She was about to play against the Hull sisters out of Spokane, and she has yet to receive an offer higher than a mid major, and I said the kid is a Pac 12 player.

This kid scored 24, 10 boards and 10 assists against the Spokane stars and the Hull twins. Do you think he even walked 100 feet to watch for two minutes?

The kid will be a three year starter and four year player for UW. And she was there for the taking. So I am thrilled our coach leaves no stone unturned for garnering talent.

Yes the past coaching staff was terrible. June was a very good recruiter but not a floor coach. Her husband was a complete waste and June never should have hired him as a n assistant

Nice story.

Amazing amount of ego in scouting from 8u rec ball to pros.

It was a "No" partly because he didn't discover the player for himself, most coaches/scouts won't listen to civilians.

The sequel to Michael Lewis' Moneyball book was supposed to focus on the players the A's picked in the 2002 draft - didn't happen because despite all those first round picks (7 counting supplemental picks) only two were successes in MLB and one (Nick Swisher) conventional methods would have led to his selection anyway (son of big leaguer). Beane's "big" discovery picked in that draft (according to Lewis), the fat catcher from Alabama with the high walks (Jeremy Brown) failed like the old line scouts said he would - not athletic enough.

That story would have made good reading anyway but not money for Lewis and his publisher.

Moneyball is an interesting read in retrospect. It goes to show how difficult scouting can be. All those first round picks and new wave analytics for players who never panned out.

Funny thing about civilian scouts. They always remember the one prospect they were right on and the pros missed. They forget all the bad calls. Or in some of our cases the hundred upon hundreds of bad calls.

I only referred one woman s volleyball player to the cougs They lost out in the recruiting battle but she is now one of the top 50 women s volleyball players in the Nation. So sometimes civilians can make good referrals .So my one call was right. However there are very few D 1 prospects where i live.

Maybe...but it only takes one minute to check it out and if you hit pay dirt easy money. For the assistant she could have seen the player during a visit on Christmas break, the school is ten minutes from her parents house.

And well some civilian scouts are better than others. Two players were recommended to the football team. One was a kicker who walked on, the other was recommended after his first start back in the fall of 15. The Cougs got on him, lost him to the UW. Because of an SAT score he had to go off to JC. I put a bug in the ear of someone close to the program, let them know the kid is available and four of his best friends attend WSU. They never looked back into him. Just signed with LSU.

Funny thing about civilian scouts: they always remember the one good call they make. They forget the hundreds (or in some cases) thousands of bad calls they make. They simply jump up and down talking about that one player they just knew was going to be great.

I can only imagine how at every place they go, some yokel wants just a second of their time to give them a hot tip on the next big thing. Must be exhausting. One thing I'm sure of: these coaches have people they listen to and trust on player evaluation. And they aren't us.

I made three, the football coaches made offers and looked at the kids, June and staff did not. I suppose every civilian scout has their day, I am on a roll, 3 for 3.

Your recommendations meant nothing in all three cases.

In the girls BBall case that is correct. The other two....if you tell the right people they do. Leach and staff weren't lazy.

*whispers* Those offers would have still gone out even if you never said a word.

Maybe... they would have gone out later. Unfortunately with one of them being the first to offer didn’t help. Love to discuss further but have to take the tree down... how about you?

Ed believes he is responsible for alerting the Cougs to Ali Gaye, which led to an offer. He wasn't.

Not sure what that means . My athletic kid isn’t a D1 player. I was advocating for the Cougs and a player in an AAU program . It would have taken Mike D fifty feet and five minutes to check it out. Didn’t have to wait around, he didn’t need to do anything. A matter of fact the AAU team played the Hull sisters who are down at Stanford. What Mine D would have seen if he watched was the kid beat the crap out of the Hull sisters .

Ummm.... Cougs like Usc would have found Ali. Hard to miss a 6 6 guy that was 260 when he graduated . But they were given the heads up after his first start when he was 240.

But sorry you missed the point. Our football staff wasn’t lazy, they received information and made an earlier offer. Did it help, nope.

The point was Mike D was there, he had to walk 50 feet. There were Stanford recruits playing . It was plain lazy even if the “alert” came from a fan. And to the point, the new staff would leave no stone unturned. Sorry you missed the point .

Irregardless if it helps or not i think that cougs can help if there is a relatively unknown recruit to coug coaches. In regards to the volleyball player i referred, a week later the coug coach was at her next game. I think that she contacted the girls coach and got a big right on it. I included the girls coach s name and how to find out about her. kudos to the coug coach who was proactive in trying to find a recruit who could have helped the team. The young woman has done well and may have helped put this team further along.
