He’s never coached in college before, so he’ll need assistants, but his name alone will pull coaches and recruits.

P4 football is pro football without any rules. Why wouldnt current or former NFL coaches wanna get involved? The recruiting just became a zillion times easier. Which was prob the biggest reason why NFL coaches didnt wanna coach college ball.

Agree, if you have enough money the entire roster of every team is a free agent, and you don't have to give up anything in return. Schools that have the deepest pockets can now stock their rosters, which has already happened, but I believe it is about to become worse. This is why they need to start putting some guidelines in place, but no one seems to have the desire to get this under control. I actually am starting to enjoy the chaos, I think the whole thing will blow up in the networks faces within 3-5 years.

The teams that have the influence to get rules in place have no reason to do so. They have the $$$ to get 4-5 star high school prospects AND pay the best talent off other teams rosters. They have the best of both worlds.

Again….
The NFL has:
Roster limit.
Salary cap.
Draft where worst teams pick first.
Tampering rules.
Multi year contracts.
Free agent period after the season is over.
Compensatory picks.

College football has none of those things. The NCAA has completely left the majority of its members without the ability to be competitive. It has catered to a small minority of members that have money, while literally fcking the majority of its members that are middle class or lower.

I have no issue with kids making $$$ off their NIL. I have no issue with kids transferring without penalty of losing eligibility. I do have issue with leagues and the NCAA having no guidelines around those things.

When I am in charge of the Pac 12:
No in conference transfers allowed. Ever.
Once you leave the conference, you cant come back.
Roster limit of 70.
Class size limit of 20.
No collectives. Kids hire their own agent. The agent gets them deals. Schools, coaches, collectives are not doing any work for them.
No redshirts. Injured and want another year? Try another conference. Goodbye.

Not disagreeing here, but it’s interesting to me that Georgia, Alabama, Ohio state, etc. aren’t dominating right now, and a few years ago Texas A$M purportedly spent something like 50 mil (most in the entire D1) to buy their roster only to be mediocre. Things that make you go hmmm…

If I was 72 and had millions upon millions of dollars and had a hot GF who was half - correction 1/3 - my age, the last thing I would be doing is taking a job. Any job. Especially not one on a college campus filled with young handsome virile studs that would be happy to keep said GF happy while I was traveling for away games, recruiting, meetings, etc.

Just sayin'.

Not a high bar but the smartest thing you’ve said in 2024.

Probably not coincidence that Saban, who couldn’t succeed in the NFL, just retired because he hates all the new rules. He couldn’t be king shit of Fck mountain by default anymore.

Why do you think he took the gig... she is too old for him now.

It is interesting Jummy Johnson kept his wofw around until he tool the Cowboy gig cause admin didnt want a single man heading their program .

Interesting call on that. You might be right

I think he'll do well. He's got credibility and a sales pitch. He's basically said he's going to set this up as a program filled with kids that want to play in the NFL. The choice is go to Alabama and get some NIL money or go to UNC, get great coaching, and get trained to be "NFL ready."

It works both ways. There are plenty of UNC coeds who would take Bill as their sugar daddy in a heartbeat.

Pretty much just adding to prior points, but until NIL took over, a guy like him would have had a fairly low ceiling in college, notwithstanding his credentials. He would have recruited about as well as one of these college coaches who famously hated recruiting like Kelly, Mullen, etc.; those guys hated it and had some cheating allegations (or worse). In today's world, they can just task recruiters and NIL collectives with recruiting the class and other aspects of managing the college roster that you don't have in the NFL, like the portal, constantly having to re-recruit everyone, etc.

That's not to say he wouldn't have landed some top defensive recruits before NIL. Just saying now he basically can function much more like a NFL coach with a marginal talent advantage most weeks.
