WSU at New Mexico game thread....

It was never great. It is a middle class Mtn West team that has come out on top in some games. Credit for gritty, late wins. But this is a poorly coached program top to bottom.
Losing when we play solid hard nosed football doesnt bother me, i dont like it but there is no shame in putting out your best effort and losing to a better team. That didnt happen tonight

I would say our coaching is a little bit above average. I'm going B-.

How can they not be better than this with being so far into the season?

That's my biggest disappointment.

A B-? Jesus. Wake the fck up. It’s an F. They dont win games because of the coaching. They win in spite of the coaching.

Yes. If you are well coached, play hard nosed football and the game is well called and managed… if you lose, fine. You went down swinging.

Dickfore sucks ass. There are none of those things happening.

MI sucks ass too. Shove your proverbs up your ass you fcking moron.

It’s embarrassing that you’re setting up strategy based on hindsight. The way this one worked out, you can argue for using the timeouts. During the action, when you’ve got the lead, and especially when the other team is running the ball, you don’t do them a favor and stop the clock.
Jfc dude go look at the posts. I was calling for them to use timeouts when there was like a minute left. There’s nothing hindsight about it. You could tell they were going to score, it was a matter of how much time we’d have to go the other way. I literally said (jokingly) so we just let em score so we can have 2 minutes and 3 timeouts left…obviously that’s extreme but then they got two big chunks and were on our 12 yard line. At that point you have to start thinking about conserving time because it’ wasn’t an issue for them. I can’t explain this to you any more simply. You are wrong. They proved it. Just stop.

I think in the second half of most of our games, we’d be better off letting Mateer call his own plays.

In fact, I’m not sure that didn’t happen against SJSU, Fresno, and SDSU. And maybe tonight, on the drive where we retook the lead for a minute.

No Biggs. WSU has had the world against them. The coaches got us good enough to beat fuw... Dickert has done it twice... IN SEATTLE!

We are probably going to have 10 wins this season which is a miracle.

I'm not saying they are awesome by any means.

I am saying that if we get 10 wins this season with all that has been against us... you cant even remotely think of firing them.

Dickert and his staff screwed the pooch tonight. Whatever happened at halftime is inexcusable. Whatever that garbage play calling was by Arbuckle in the third Q is inexcusable. The fact the D couldn’t make any adjustments and accepted death by 1000 paper cuts is inexcusable at this level. The clock management at the end of the game was awful.

Dickert deserves some credit for what the team has accomplished this season but they have some soul searching to do. Certainly seems like there’s some guys on this staff that can’t get it done at this level based on what we saw tonight.

I don’t care if we do get to 10 wins, both of our coordinators should go. This team has shown no improvement, and I think has regressed from September to now. We have trouble blocking, and we have trouble tackling.

Tonight a 198 pound QB was moving the pile on us. Tonight we couldn’t diagnose a play/formation even though they ran it 57 times. Tonight we were tearing them up with a mix of run & pass and had a chance to take control, but instead went to all pass. We made no adjustments. It was a total shitshow, and our coaches apparently didn’t notice that their plans weren’t working. That may be why half the defense looked like they were asleep - they knew the coaches weren’t paying attention anyway.

I’ve seen some bad performances on the football field, but this one rates pretty high on the list. This isn’t a good team that just beat us, even worse than that it’s a bad defense that shut us down.

And please... don't twist what I'm saying (not that you specifically are)

We would be morons to fire a coach batting 500 against fuw and if he gets us a 10 win season.

Especially since we are broke and still trying to set up a f'ing conference

Record against UW should not be a determining factor. And no, WSU is not going to fire a head coach after a 10-win season (or even after an 8-win season).

The bar for coordinator positions should be much lower. We’ve got an offensethat has seriously underperformed for 2 seasons, built around an OL that can’t block. And a defense that is now among the worst in the country, can’t generate QB pressure, can’t tackle, and can’t cover the pass. Those all seem like serious problems.

And, yes…the HC shares responsibility for hiring them in the first place. But coordinators are always the first to go. And go they should.

Dickfore beat Jimmy and Jedd? Not DJ and CP. Wake up.

10 wins this season is not a miracle. It is a jv fcking schedule.

You are saying they’re awesome. Your definition of awesome is beating a bad uw team and winning 10 jv football games. Wake up.

What has Dickfore done that another coach couldnt have done? Here’s one… what has he done that Bronco couldnt have done? Cause he was available… A lot of coaches are good guys. He hasnt done anything special in navigating WSU thru conference realignment. He has done WSU no favors with his bullshit defensive scheme or his Coug Raid offenses. How many diff coordinators in his first 2-3 seasons? Where is the talent? Where is the development and improvement? Who is getting better?

I agree. WSU won’t fire him. Hopefully some other school buys his bill of goods and hires him away.

MI can eat nuts.

Moronic is retaining a coach that is over his head and is bad at coaching football.

Poorly coached football is not a sustainable business model. The wheels will fall off. It is not if, it is when.

Is it next season? The degree of difficulty goes up.

Poorly coached football is a matter of time before it bites you.

Dickfore is a fraud. Give him a greyhound bus ticket. Dont let him on the plane.
Congratulations on being right one out ten times. You are a savant. A football genius. We are all in awe.

What blows my mind is how this defense stopped UW at the one yard line. That play and effort/coaching in the UW game seems like an eternity ago.

That was simply a case of being out-dumbed by the UW coach running a short side option with a lead foot QB.

Maybe it's hard to get ready to play and show up each and every game.

Then you've got your coach telling you and the media how great and dangerous New Mexico is. The team didn't believe that Dampier was a huge dual threat or weapon. Hard to win week after week without taking the gas off the pedal.

You think you'll just show up and win the game. The Lobos played hard.

Typical trap game, but our defense is still pretty awful, bad and weak.

And then we'll go down to Corvallis and blow the doors of a really bad OSU team.

UW stopped themselves at the 1. It was a bad playcall and even worse execution by their OL. Our defense was just on the field.

Well yeah, that’s obvious. We still needed to tackle the kid and blow up a couple of blocks which didn’t happen much at all last night. Held a team with considerably better athletes under 20 points.

I thought about the Cougs taking timeouts too. If they had, and used all three, NM would burn the clock in the huddle. The way our defense was playing, yeah, maybe let them score.😒
NM should have taken the 10 second runoff. 14 seconds is plenty time at 3rd and goal and a timeout left.

I was surprised they didn’t take the runoff too. Time was a problem for us not them. When that's the case you have to burn your timeouts on D assuming they are going to score. You can control the clock on offense, you can’t on defense. It was piss poor clock management.

I was surprised as well that they declined the 10 second runoff, no reason for them to need more time.

There are times to take your timeouts early on defense and there are times to not do that. I have seen it done both ways many, many times, college as well as pros. Each method is not infallible, but each method DOES work. You need to understand the situation in the game and evaluate the most likely scenario that will play out.

Last night, the way the game was going, the most likely scenario was that NM was likely to score and take the lead. Sad to say that is exactly what I expected to happen, but it was true. NM had been gashing us for the entire second half, and had scored 4 times and only punted once, and had not turned the ball over one time. Were the odds good that we would stop them or were the odds that they would score and we would need to score to win the game? Obviously the odds were that they would score, thus forcing us to score to win. With that being the case, the rational approach is to use at least 2 of your 3 time outs to preserve clock.

Here is the thing-do the TO's do you any good at all if you need to score? Nope. Are they a great liability if they have a turnover or do not score? No, they are not. Realizing that WSU was playing with the Palouse Pussies in the second half and not the Palouse Posse, saving time for your offense to win the game for you was imperative! And maybe having a couple TO breaks would have given the D a chance to catch their breath enough to make a defensive stop?

Sorry 95, but your reasoning is defective in this case. And yes, I was futilely yelling at my TV for them to use the time outs while NM was driving closer.

Even just today (hesitate to use the jets to further the point) the colts were driving for the go-ahead score with less than a minute and a half to go. Colts were inside the 10 and just completed a pass to the 6 and the jets used their last timeout.

If they hadn't the game would've ended with the colts td. As it happened (ultimately futile) the jets had 46 seconds to gain 30 yds for a winning fg attempt. The absolute right call for them was to use their TO (while still having the lead) to give them ANY chance at victory.

Yup, COUGS effed that up yesterday. That's all I have to say about that.

Palouse Pussies…haha. I hate that that’s funny but pretty appropriate for that sorry excuse for a defense last night.

Palouse Pussies? That's sadly appropriate. Honestly, someone needs to post that in the locker room and let everyone on D stare at it for 10 minutes. The coordinators for 30 minutes. Maybe that will make a difference. Of course, I'm older and come from a time where a coach could use shame as a motivator for improvement.....

As for the timeout debate there is no general rule. It's very situation specific. You have to take into account all factors. I agree with 90 and others that given that the defense was shiite, and odds were high NM would score, we need to have as much time left as possible. If we have a minute left there's a good chance we score. One factor that hasn't been mentioned is that NM still had 2 time outs themselves under a minute if I recall correctly. So us NOT calling a time out with the hopes that they would run out of time is just dumb. There's other nuances to that but I don't feel like writing a longer novel....

They cant do it. They aren’t strong enough to play knock back, physical football. Yelling and shaming won’t help them. They need coaches that can scheme it up.

They dont have those coaches.

I'm figuring out more on your logic Biggs and you're more right than wrong.

WSU has had the greatest coaches ever in the past. Seriously... why measure short now when we have feasted at the table?

My argument back at you is that we're sitting in a new battlefield now and until we have a NIKE donor... we have to gamble and be penny conscious until Butch parts the Cougar sea.

We can't be an ounce of stupid when it comes to firing. If we get 10 wins this year... we'd look like idiots to chop our Dickert off.

You should be screaming for him to succeed and be great and stay or to be great and leave.

You weren’t wrong. It helps when you have willing participants (Arbuckle and Scmedling most notably). As good as Bronco May be that still should have been a 49-35 type game at the worst.

95....when have they been able to block?

We act like Leach was a juggernaut. Remember when Leach was going to light it up against another MWC in BYU on 2012? Remember 30-6 ? Their defensive minded head coach rushed 3, dropped 8. Care to guess who BYU's head coach was in 2012? (hint...we saw him on Saturday Night) They set the blue print for how to defend this offense. Justin Wilcox and Jimmy Lake, not brain surgeon's, had no problem stopping the air raid.

The adjustment that should have been made was playing 2 TE's in second half. But we have always struggled running the ball.

Heavy formations shifts more defenders into the box Ed. Not what you want for an OL that struggles to run block.

The best case scenario is that he leaves. Piss poor coaching isn’t sustainable. The doors will get blown off eventually. He would be wise to be entertaining offers this year.

I 200% agree that firing him after this year is a bad look. You have to wait. And next year could be it. The schedule gets tougher. The players arent getting better. If you can’t start now, on this team, are you really gonna be a super star? Prob not.

The NIL whale isn’t coming. The staff needs to coach. They need to find a way to play good football with lesser talent. They need to find a way to get kids as coached up as possible, as fast as possible, and get moving. There is no more development over years. The kids leave too soon. You gotta get what you can while the getting is good.

The smart chart is knowing what good football looks like and what bad football looks like. This is bad football.

The off season will be interesting.

The NIL/portal world really encourages schools to form alignments to make themselves developmental sites for the blue bloods. The G5 school takes the recruits and coaches them for a year or two, then they take the pipeline to Ohio state or whatever. The ones who don’t pan out at the big school take the pipeline the other way.

While I hate that model and don’t support it, sometimes it’s best to be first…

You can only play so many kids at a time. Kids move in, kids move out. A staff’s ability to get kids prepared and coached up as fast as possible is really important now. Those staffs that can will move forward. Those staffs that cant will tread water barely able to keep their head up.

I would wager we will see the talent spread out a lil bit more.

50 new kids on the roster

2 losses vs 8 wins.

Looks like the coaching staff got them coached up quickly.

Imagine this team returning along with reinforcements.

Well yeah, that’s obvious. We still needed to tackle the kid and blow up a couple of blocks which didn’t happen much at all last night. Held a team with considerably better athletes under 20 points.
You folks crack me up. Head I win, tails you lose. If Dickert wins it is because of a friendly schedule, the other team sucks or poor coaching. If he loses it is because he sucks and Mendenhall is just another schlep.

I could use your lens and talk to you about the great defense of 94. We played Tennessee and they were starting a true freshman and only mustered 10 points. They played USC at home and got dominated? When they played UCLA that year we played against their third string qb, UW had a running game but it snowed, three other teams that year we played against aback up qb. Price never won those games, the other team always faltered.

Are you channeling Sponge? Why did he give up posting by the way?

Heavy formations shifts more defenders into the box Ed. Not what you want for an OL that struggles to run block.
Then you hit the bigger body TE in hookup zones. Having a TE creates the defense to declare earlier and it can add to the running game. But we have had problems run blocking since 2005
