Apple Cup News

Dd
I get the frustration but we've got to make money somewhere and the Apple Cup is going to be a way to make a fair amount. Like it or not, we will probably get somewhere between $2 million and $5 million for the game and we don't have a fanbase that donates enough money to turn that down. Where I would be pissed is if Chun is willing to pro-rate the payout with the Huskies. It's got to be a 50/50 split or don't do it.
good luck with that. They already tried to big time us once when they tried to make this a neutral site game in Seattle.

Based on where we are at, UW demands 65% and Chun probably folds and gives it to them.

No, they won't.

There's enough Puget Sound Cougs who want to relive their 1990's glories and getting Popcorn Guy wasted.
I don’t think it will get boycotted per se. I do think there’s enough folks who would normally attend that are not going to. And this for a game that never sold out anyways. As for UW fans, this is pretty quickly going to turn into the equivalent of an off campus game against Eastern. They will lose interest rather quickly imo. This is not the Apple Cup if it plays out this way. The Apple cup is dead. Only way for this thing to have that juice is if Cougs stay P5 and can actually be competitive in the game and if the game is played on both campuses.

Did you read Schulz's letter? It reads as though he's steering us towards the bottom of D1 football, but hey keep showing up and paying $150/ ticket to watch the Cougs get their teeth kicked in at a body bag game in Seattle!

$5 million seems a bit optimistic. If the stadium fills at $100/ticket, that's 7 million total. Plus whatever TV money we will get.

UW isn't sharing - they didn't leave the conference to continue to give us D1 welfare. And they can get any other non-con cupcake to fill that slot for cheap, so the only way that game actually happens is if we allow it to. In spite of what anyone at UW, WSU, or his royal highness in Olympia says, no one gives a flying fck about the Apple Cup unless its a sweetheart deal for the mutts.

Couple things. It ain’t gonna sell out. Also, 100% of ticket revenue isn’t going to the schools. Or probably better said there are costs to playing the game as well that need to be factored in. I don’t know what the sliding scale of $ looks like that actually makes it back to the schools.

Yep, just putting some numbers out there. This is a bad idea, and we would probably lose as much in donations as we would get for the game. And what network will televise this? Not the Big 10's. Probably the Pac-12 network (if it still exists) at 7:30. Speaking of, where do we go with that? I have no idea what the dollars look like. Can it be shrunk down to just televise live FB and some BB games and be a blank screen the rest of the time? Cost savings vs revenue declines from the networks?

P12 conference owns the P12 network. Why would the network exist to televise a conference that doesn't exist?

If we need cash, then go get it. Body bag games will pay more than this.
Do they? Genuinely curious. I can't find good numbers other than seeing that, e.g., BYU got $1.1m for going on the road to play Oregon last year, and a few anecdotes about some schools paying closer to $2m for some home games with G of 5s this year.

My take on this administration is that it would rather try to make a couple million with a "neutral site" Apple Cup in Lumen, even if UW took down $3m, than to go take $2m to play Florida State in Tallahassee or something like that, for numerous reasons.

UW money is no longer welcomed. I do not care how desperate WSU is.

Letting UW have their cake, and eat it to. What does that say to everyone?
Again....I don't like it, but we need the cash. If our donors stepped up to give them same amount of money not to play the game, then money talks.....otherwise, it's what we need to do to keep our budget full.

As stated over the summer here on this forum: are you planning to tell women's tennis we are cutting your program because we are too proud to play UW? That is reality at this point.

Oh Bleed, Bleed, Bleed. We are talking about 2024, when there WILL be a Pac2. With 2 teams, the network has little material. Us and OSU. Football when someone else doesn't pick us up, Basketball. And that's it. Dark the rest of the year. Remember when TV stations used to sign off at 1 or 2 AM?

No idea how the money would work, although I don't think anyone gives a shit about all that filler material between games (and all the staff needed to produce it.

Things should get a lot clearer when we get control of the Conference, kick Quackkoff out for cause, and dig into the books. I may volunteer to come out of retirement and help. For a modest fee of course. :)

Lumen won't be sold out. Coug fans will boycott it.
Because our fans suck. We boycott our Pullman home games. 23K fans vs Cal on Homecoming last year. Maybe 25K this year. How many do you think will turn out vs. Stanford and Colorado in our Cougs vs. Everybody season?

I love all the tough talk from our message board warriors. We’re last in CAF giving. Last in attendance. Don’t have a conference or a schedule next season. Yea, money doesn’t matter. Why play the Apple Cup when we can schedule Central WA in Pullman in a non-televised game?

I’ll tolerate your silly chatter about Xs and Os, but leave the business decisions to the grown ups.

Do grown ups who do business things typically go into business with partners that have already screwed them over?

I'll hang up and listen.

Uh no. There is this funny thing called Title IX. Which started with a lawsuit by WSU Women's coaches BTW. We are already 53% male athletes, so we are on the fringes as it is. 14 teams is the minimum to remain Division 1 (not talking P5 here, just Division 1 period). We have 15 teams. We can't cut any sports.

And the stadium has to be rented, concessionaires paid, etc.

Yeah - the grownups have done such a good job over the last year with those business decisions.

Business decisions made by other institutions that ultimately F’d us over…now people want to turn around and shake hands and do new deals with them? F that!

What do you think Schulz could have done differently, and why do you think UW screwed us over? They’re guilty of not giving a chit about us, yes, but they’re far better off being aligned with Oregon than they are with WSU. Sorry if that hurts.

Let’s be clear, if the tables were turned and WSU got an offer from the B!G with the caveat that UW won’t be invited, we all would have stuck the knife in and twisted it.

When we had the $30 million ESPN deal on the table, Schulz was in the room. He and all his Athletic experience. Saying no to that deal f-ed us. He should have been screaming "take it". But he is a wimp.

You'd have to cut mens golf or something to keep the numbers in balance....but the point is, non-revenue sports need to be funded by TV and gate revenue. I don't think the economics of a body bag game equate to the gate and TV revenue...plus the economic impact the Apple Cup has on Pullman every 2 years. The game will be played whether fans like it or not.

WSU already pretty much has the bare minimum number of varsity sports. The MWC schools all have around the same number.

SEC and ACC play 8 conference games so they need a lot of OOC opponents but I expect them to go up to 9 and possibly 10 with the massive TV contracts so the demand for OOC opponents is going to go down along with the amount you’ll get paid.
And there is no tv revenue playing a road/body bag game. If the proposal is Lumen 50/50, then Pullman and mont lake rotation that will be worth significantly more money then playing a body bag.
I still think we’ll try to find body bag games in 24 and 25 since we literally are in a conference of 2, but most of the big boys who will pay for those are scheduled out.

And when it comes time to beg the state for assistance do you think it will play well that we turned down a game with uw that would help our financial situation by $1-2M/year?

We could see WSU playing teams we never dreamed they’d play just to fill the schedule. Or they choose not to play them and just have a small schedule.

D2, NAIA, D3 are what I mean by teams we never dreamed of.

Or maybe petition the NCAA to allow schools to play 13 regular season games to help out????

There are a few games with realignment that may open things up like Baylor vs Utah and Utah vs BYU. Of course they may just keep those as a non conference game even though they are in the same conference. Notre Dame v Stanford is another one but will bet that stays non conference.

Regarding Utah vs. BYU, this is relevant. (Also has at least some potential implications for any Big 12 dreams still floating around.)

No offense to the Big 12, but that list of schedules is pretty damned uninspiring. Losing OU and Texas and the addition of Cincinnati, Houston, BYU and UCF has made that conference a glorified Mountain West conference. The next playoff iteration is going to hose that conference.

Yet we’d be in such a better spot if we were on that schedule.

I'm not sure why WSU feels like they need to uphold any good partnership with UW. That river was napalmed, and there should be no good will.
WSU is a state school funded mainly by Husky grads. That’s why this game will be played in Lumen Field.

You really think Chun has any options here?

Uh, yeah, the middle finger. One AC payday (let's see how the numbers compare to a body bag game) does not solve our problems. This is the worst F-ing thing Charlie Chun could possibly entertain.

What a horrible hire he was.

Edit: Why does a husky FB player have red eyes after sex?

You keep making this disgraceful reference to Chun, and people on here, for whatever reason, allow you to get away with it.
Oh stop Karen. Charlie Chan was a really smart guy - there is no insult, in fact it is a compliment, to refer to Chun in that manner. Chun should be fired. So should Schulz.

But I suppose I could call Chun a bunch of other names (these are slurs). Gook, Slope, Fong, rice eater, Hong Kong Fooey, etc. That make you feel better? We are Siamese if you please.......

Edit - forgot slant eyes.

I don't personally care what you say, but this isn't funny. Nor were your jokes about sleeping with underage girls. I'm surprised that the other people on here who you exchange political messages with give you a free pass on it. You're not a young kid.

I have never made a joke about sleeping with underage girls. Where the F do you get that? Show me my post(s) saying that. Bullshit.

Now referring to young or younger adult women is another story.

Sorry I pissed you off about Chun. I actually like Asians, but we won't go there. Except this one young honey from China - I just couldn't go all the way with her. She was just too young and innocent. Did bring her home for Thanksgiving, much to the surprise of my folks. Heh heh.

Gross if true. We either play in their house, or in their nextdoor neighbor’s house?

Not knowing what will ultimately happen to this program, our #1 goal remains WINNING GAMES. That’s how you build and maintain programs.

Lots of Cougs have defended this move in the past, saying “I would get to attend” or “it’s money for the program.” That’s short-term thinking. Long-term thinking is putting the best possible resume out there for you to get donations, go bowling, and get butts in seats long term.

I’m missing the part others refer to where UW dictated this? But if so, even grosser, and a total surrender to our imploding clout. Maybe we could even show up early and handle UW’s team luggage from Husky Stadium to Lumen and get a $20 tip?

That’s ridiculous. You know those arrogant pricks don’t tip.
