The early period began on June 15.2014. The coaches can contact players and have off campus visits with them. So far ,the cougs have extended offers to SF 's 6''7 Tony Anderson and 6''7 Nate Grimes. They are also eying 6'10 Isaiah Robinson and 6'11 Greyson Smallwood. These two positions being recruited ,show the need for bigger swing forwards and legitimate big men. The cougs have only 6''7 Cheatum and 6''7 Longrus as legitimate big men after next season. The staff is trying to address the needs at this early date. The cougs can offer playing time for all new players being recruited,so they are probably playing up this in their recruiting.

I know many don't agree but watch out for Hawkinson. Also I watch two full game tapes of Cheatum not sure exactly what we got there, flashes of very good them long periods of nothing, but the potential is there but next year I don't see it.

Well if the two of them produce then the cougs will be a much improved team Hawkinon just seems slow afoot .has little hops and did not seem to have much strength and/or lateral movement. But what i really wanted to talk about was the players being recruited. They are both potential stars in the making. Smallwood is long and skinny but seems to have timing on blocks and moves well. Robinson is the son of exNBA Cliff Robinson. His mother remarried and he lives with his mother and stepfather who is a basketball coach. He is new to the game of basketball and quite raw. He only took up the game in his HS years. He only averaged 6.3 pts and 4.7 rbs last year. The other two players are well recruited but they have already been extended offers by many colleges.

I know you and your pseudonym El Commanche don't think much of Hawkinson (it's starting to look a lot like your repeated comments about Abe Lodwick a few years ago), but I consider Josh a legitimate big man...certainly more so than Cheatum, at least until I actually see what Cheatum can do as a D-1 player. Not sold on him at all.

Glad Cougar

If one watches the coug games, one can readily see that the cougs need big men, If the local kid can earn playing time then so be it. I just did not see much from the kid last year. His playing time diminished as the competition got better. If one looks at Cheatum's play last year, one sees that he played very well at tournament time. The better players rise to the occasion . Everyone has favorite players for different reasons; I like the players based on their ability not the geographical location where they played .The players will all have a chance to impress their coach.

Smallwood has plenty of talent, its just a problem at this point of focus. Read Nick Daschels report to the Oregonian and what his HS and AAU coach has to say.

Getting them both would be nice.

Just one more quick note on Hawkinson, he graduated high school at 17 years old he is / was a pretty young freshmen.

Hawkinson is certainly not the most talented or athletic player on the team. Not even close. But I'll guaran-damn-tee you he's the hardest worker. He'll have a productive career when it's all said and done.

Well he has good bloodlines if i remember correctly.. However if Kent can attract the type of players that he is currently recruiting,Hawkinson may be the odd man out. Somehow i get the feeling that his hometown fans or family frequent this board? If the kid can play, more power to him. If he does not measure up then let him transfer. It would be better if he can play,. When he was recruited ,it was said that he was an"outstanding student",so he can raise the GPA of the team.

A post note to earlier comments. i actually do hope that Hawkinson improves and can contribute to next years' team. He had better be hitting the weight room and running each day. It would be nice to have a 610 -245 pd PF who can run, and hit from the outside. If he is strong enough to get inside position and make good passes to the outside shooters and cutters, and get defensive rebounds, then he would help mightily. But from what i saw last year,he had a long ways to go. More power to the young man if he works hard and improves. It is possible for some players to do it with hard work.
