Coaches getting fired....or not....

Saw the post elsewhere about Helton coming back. Good. But this one is interesting. Smith goes 9-27 in 3 years, and they extend him 2 more. So a full 5 years more. And he is already in the top 15 in salary among D-1 coaches?

http://www.espn.com/college-footbal...oach-lovie-smith-gets-two-year-extension-2023
I wrote about Helton earlier a few days ago, that do not be surprised if he is retained. USC has an interim President. As important as any football team is to the face of any university, USC is dealing with several multi-million (as in hundreds of millions) lawsuits that have taken priority over the football program.

In defense of keeping Helton, they don’t look far away. Their WRs are outstanding (always), and their QB will be much better next season.

It’s a good business move to retain him. They’ll go 8-4 next season without even trying.

They should be 8-4 every year without trying. To go 5-7 is truly special at SC. Not in a good way.

Who are they litigating with?

It’s astounding how many blue blood programs get caught in situations where they have poor QB play, either due to injury or inexperience. You have to develop a QB in every recruiting class. That’s something Leach is great at.

Last week they reached a settlement for around $210 million because a campus doctor was molesting women who came to see him. There is also a lawsuit against them with UC Berkeley. This is on top of other lawsuits they have paid out in the last 10-15 years.

Helton signed a new extension after last season. They do not want to pay off his buy out clause and then pay what it would take for a contract for a new coach.

They’re also spending $300 million to renovate the coliseum.

What’s interesting to me is how they rely so heavily on their qb. With a blue blooded programs advantages they could run the ball, play action pass, make it easy to be a qb in their system. Yet still, they struggle.

I agree, so why not always have a serviceable upperclassman on the roster? They should never be backed into a corner by relying on a true freshman. They can recruit 4 star QBs every class.

Heck, USC can recruit two (and maybe three) 4-star QBs every class.

And they’re in California, where there are at least 20 QB prospects every class.

Yes. Here’s a tip. Pick the most dynamic kid. Maybe not as tall or as strong an arm. The kid that won a state title on grit. The kid other kids play hard for. That guy. Get that guy every year and odds are a few of the will take you to league titles.

I will say that the days of SC getting unlimited depth are over. If you’re a good prospect, why be an SC backup plan when you can start for other P12 or MWC schools? Almost all games are on TV now. Would you rather be the starter for Boise St., SDSU, Fresno? I would.

Because players dream of playing for USC their entire lives. They do not dream of playing for Boise St., SDSU, Fresno. It is the reason why the coaches that came from Boise are getting commitments from players at the uw that wouldn't give them the time of day when they were at BSU.

Good points. I forgot about that.

That's also because they want to play in the Pac12.

From what someone mentioned to me yesterday USC is supposedly interviewing someone I consider a top 5 coach in the country. If true and he moves it would be a great fit for USC. If USC doesn't get him I suspect they will keep Helton unless a booster writes a huge check to get rid of Helton.

Which program is our biggest threat to poach Leach this off-season?

I didn't even see it coming with Tennessee last year. I should have.

I say he'd love to coach in the SEC....maybe ACC. Who in the Big 12 is a threat? I can't think of any off-hand. OSU Pokes?? Who else?

Someone will come after him after what he has built here. I can guarantee that.

Thoughts?

There is one team in the Big 12 that is a threat if chips fall in the wrong order for us.

I'm holding me breath Ed, you little tease...please do tell.

TT? Big payout for past sins and make up kiss?

Edit: Wait...Baylor!? That is certainly a possibility.

The odds of you getting to the NFL with hardly any game film are low. As long as your coaching is good and you have game film youll be fine. The better the conference, the better your opponents are. Might be helpful when the scouts are evaluating you.

My advice, go where you can play the most with sound schemes.

He isnt going anywhere.

I hope not. Chun has an easy sell, in my opinion. It’s your program coach. It’s your city. Here’s a fat raise, please coach here forever. We’ll get you a finished IPF and stay the Hell out of your way. What else do you need, buddy?

Who is gonna offer? What does that school have to offer? Why make a lateral move or go somewhere worse? Do you really wanna take over a program that just fired their coach and needs to rebuild? Youve already got WSU going.

Name another school where youre gonna be in the mix for the league championship game in the last week of the season... that is open.

Well...no one saw Tennessee last year...and had it not been for their incompetence, they would have snagged him. There are a few others out there that could do this. Baylor maybe?

Oklahoma might pull the trigger on Leach if Riley goes elsewhere. Baylor is not going to fire their coach who just got them back to bowl eligibility.

Only thing about Oklahoma is that they may not want to run that system. Not sure though.

I should have checked on Baylor. I didn't realize they were bowl eligible. They would be one to watch though if things go haywire.

Big fan of Scott Frost succeeding at Nebraska given Moos-Leach link. They'll give Frost some time though and I think he'll get them back on track.

The hope is they look elsewhere, as there won’t be a shortage of candidates for that job. It would be tough for us to compete with them. Plus, he’d get to play Texas Tech.

Baylor just hired. Theyre not firing their new coach.

Youre making things up.

Has Baylor fired their coach? I thought they just got bowl eligible.
Gibbons set me straight on that. I hadn't heard peep from Baylor this season so I assumed they weren't doing very well. Looks like we can cross them off as a threat for now.

The gig isn’t open . If we lose Leach it would be like a Jimmy Johnson / Dennis Erickson scenario . Someone from a blue blood would have to move to the nfl

Yep

If we are talking about the same one and I think we are, that is literally the only job that I personally ever see Leach leaving WSU. From my observation from playing golf with boosters of several programs for whatever reason Leach is better thought by the big hitters from that particular University than any other . He would even have the support of all their retired coaches and one of them has a big voice.

Ed, I started this thread 3 hours before you posted, after reading that Lynn Swann announced publicly that Helton was coming back.

I could see Oklahoma as one of the very few. But I could also see Oklahoma just going down to UCF and hiring their alum Josh Heupel. He had a pretty good year.

Not sure what that means . So Swann said he is coming back . When has that meant squat ?
