Coaches getting fired....or not....

CougEd said:
Not sure what that means . So Swann said he is coming back . When has that meant squat ?

When the school releases a press release the day after the last game of the season, it means something.

The last thing I ever want to do is side with gibby against anyone, including my pal Ed. But Ed, fer gawdsakes, Really? We aren't talking about the mid-season kiss of death "we support the coach" here. Please stop.

TCU and OK st both trending the wrong direction. Both 6-6. Will be interesting to see what their programs do. Both Gundy and Patterson are good coaches.

Yep

If we are talking about the same one and I think we are, that is literally the only job that I personally ever see Leach leaving WSU. From my observation from playing golf with boosters of several programs for whatever reason Leach is better thought by the big hitters from that particular University than any other . He would even have the support of all their retired coaches and one of them has a big voice.
Why is this such a big secret to call out the school? Are they spying on this message board and this will somehow be bad to call out? Genuinely curious.

Yep, Oklahoma is the school I would most worry about. There has been speculation that Lincoln Riley might want to be an NFL coach at some point.

I doubt Leach would be interested, but North Carolina now has an opening. It's ACC and I could see him wanting the challenge of getting after Clemson. It's also closer to the Keys.

Glad Cougar

The challenge would be getting wins against everyone else in the ACC.

While much of the Helton speculation noted above is reasonable, I have a bit different thought about it. First, the buy out is real money, but nothing significant for SC. There are enough big donors who want him gone that they could literally pass a hat for pledges to cover his buyout. Second, Swann is in a tough position for several reasons. In no particular order: He actually likes Helton (most people do; he is a nice guy); he is on record that the string of injuries to key individuals explains many of the losses; he was a bit surprised by how quickly the season went south, and he did not adequately pre-prepare for a coaching search; he genuinely believes that the team will do much better next year with Helton; and....IMHO the most significant factor...there is nobody readily available that he particularly wants to take Helton's place. Sure, SC could probably entice a lot of successful coaches to LA. But Swann did not really assemble a short list, and there is no one out there right now that really rings his chimes. All of that combined means he has chosen to stay with Helton. As others have said, SC can go 8-4 next year without breaking a sweat. Whether they win 7, 8 , 9 or 10 games depends upon a lot of things. I think 8 is a reasonable guess, but my second choice would be 9, not 7, even with Helton in charge.

Swann's biggest problem is that Helton is a mediocre coach. He should have pulled the trigger this year. How do you fire him next year with 8 or 9 wins? But will SC be happy with consistent 8-9 win seasons? Seems unlikely to me. And with Chip in town, UCLA will beat SC more often than it loses. Three years from now the SC brand will have been diminished somewhat and Helton will be fired. Swann blew it.

USC has financial issues. Several lawsuits, including the one against the medical center doctor that was molesting women. And Helton just signed an extension.

They're talking about Oklahoma. I don't know why Ed is being secretive about it, since he's posted about Oklahoma before on the board.

The fear would be that Riley goes to the NFL, maybe the Browns to reunite with Mayfield.

As for Ok ST & TCU, those would be a couple of all time short sighted firings. Ok St is 1 year removed from winning 30 games in 3 years. And TCU won 11 games last year.

If those schools want to fire those guys and come after Leach, fine. We can just swap them coaches.

Ummm I have never mentioned Oklahoma on this board .

Well, Ed old pal, with 17,637 posts to your credit, are you SURE that you have never mentioned Oklahoma? Maybe back back in 2002, like when we played them in the Rose Bowl?

You should go for a drive some time. In really nasty weather. Lots of black ice. Do everyone a favor, Erictile D/Dickenson Baird.

I did . Twice actually . Once going to Rosie’s first start in 1986. Totaled the car, flipped it three times and got to live and see the game and can tell the story now.

Thanks for the wishes fake name Banke.

Try doing it again. Here's hoping for better results. GFY, Erictile D.

Wow . So sorry you had a bad weekend . I promise it will get better Joey

Says the "dawg" father, Eric C. Dickenson aka Dickenson Baird, 206-300-7309. My weekend was just fine, and the days ahead are about to be even better. You'll soon figure out why.

I am on pins and needles. Well I am glad your days are going to get better.

Your days are numbered...

Oh that. Do tell. Let me ask you a question. How would Rivals ever ban me and let you post when you break rules all the time?

And it sure is funny, for a person who never posts during the winning streaks as you have claimed, you sure want me to be even more quiet. Sure seems odd.

I wonder if Virginia Tech might not soon be courting CML. Tech had a crappy year this year and Hokie Fans are getting rather cranky. VT does have some history of passing the football, so Leach's brand of ball would not shake things up drastically.

Justin Fuente is a great coach. VT is fine.

Agree with Fab above that TCU and Ok-State are situations where firing would be short-sighted. OSU went 10-3 for three straight seasons before this blip. Firing Gundy would be the height of stupidity for them. The guy's a mullet wearing tool that knows how to piss off everyone, but he knows the football.

Patterson's had TCU on the edge of greatness a couple times and politics is the only reason that they didn't play in the CFP a few years back. TCU knows that they are lucky to have Patterson. Neither are going anywhere unless they choose to.
