Colorado football season tickets sold out

Big difference in surrounding population.

There are over 100,000 people living in Boulder, over 700,000 in Denver, and it is 40 min away.
It also helps having a real Airport vs. us and barely enough for a Cascade Airways comeback.

I suspect that by the last half of the season there will be a lot of empty seats. No fun going to football games in miserable weather when you are losing. It will be one of the more interesting story lines in the PAC to see if his game equals his talk. For most people, particularly at the beginning of the effort, it is hard to get action to match bold predictions. We'll see...

In case you didn't notice, Pullman's airport expansion now accommodates 737's. Although I swear that many years ago UCLA landed at the airport, rather than the usual Lewiston destination. And the Boulder airport does not even have commercial air service. Making me assume that traveling teams have to go to DIA, out in BF Egypt.

Fairly certain that UCLA landed in MOscow-Pullman in the mid-90s.

I can tell you with absolute certainty that they stayed at University Inn in Moscow in 1993.

Loyal, I have not heard "BF Egypt" in many a day. Brings back memories. I got into a debate one time about whether BF Egypt was closer to being somewhere between Lind and Washtucna, or somewhere on the Marlin Ruff Road. I knew people from both locations and it was a fun beer conversation.

I believe Colorado had about 1/2 dozen players hit the portal in the last week. Not sure if they are starters or backups, but there is a lot of movement on that roster, more room for Deon to add some upgrades. In regards to the portal, several high profile programs have players on their 2 deeps moving on, and I see Smalls is leaving UW, didn't live up to the hype surrounding him coming out of high school, is it coaching, attitude or ability?

I would argue that BFE is actually located between Washtucna and either Dusty or Ritzville.

Spokane county is over half a million.

TriCities is 300k, but it is further away.

Seattle has a very large contingent of Cougs who already show up strong, but it could be better, but I'm not going to crap on people who have to make a 10 hour round trip.

Coug fans suck at buying tickets and showing up to games. Football and Basketball, this shouldn't be a debate because its true. Also true that Cougs suck at giving.

But we'll buy the hell out of T-Shirt or anything else branded with the logo!

Methinks you give Tri-Cities a bit too much credit. The combined counties barely break past 300K. The cities are more like 260K. And they're a 4+ hour roundtrip from an area with basically zero incentive to attend.

That's a problem that should be addressed, no?

Honestly, I beat my head against the wall for 6 years as a volunteer for what used to be known as the "cougar club" trying to figure out how to increase engagement, as did everyone else involved who wasn't employed by WSU. Any idea that got past the WSU thought police would get steam for a hot second then fizzle out like a fart in the wind. Again, the bigger problem is that WSU doesn't care, so why should its fanbase?

I'll just offer one observation, having played for several really good coaches and two that were not.

When I look at the portal picture when a kid is transferring out after not making a mark in his program, a question that I always ask myself is whether the kid was over-rated, or the coach was over-rated. Especially after only 1 year in a program, it can be hard to distinguish whether the failure is on the kid, on the coaching staff, or both. After 2 years it is a little clearer, but still not certain unless you have some inside knowledge. Colorado seems to me to be a poster child for the question of whether someone can talk their way to success. Looks like Deion has succeeded thus far in terms of grabbing publicity and alum interest, which translates into financial resources. With the free publicity and NIL money he has bought a bunch of players. What remains to be seen is what he will do with them. All the self-promotion in the world won't play a single down in a uniform. We will find out what he can do this fall.

Been there, done that for 12-14 years in Pierce County, until 2012 and retirement to Idaho. What was your area? Were you in attendance at the fall "President's Summits"?

My memory is that there was a marketing presence in the Tri-Cities area in the late 80s and up to about the mid-90s. Pretty much the era of the "Cougar Football Saturday" pseudo-country song that most of us can probably still recognize. After that...little to nothing. By the time I moved to Tri-Cities, there was no visible presence or effort, and that really hasn't changed much.

They have a couple of events consistently - the tailgate with coaches, a Cougar Gold & Mistletoe before Christmas, and a spring pub crawl. Outside of that, they don't do much. And those 3 events are all targeted to people who sign up to be targeted - alums, season ticket holders, alumni association members. There's no general advertising. WSU marketing is so effective that there's a campus in town that a lot of people don't know about.

Vancouver/ Portland.

No, I did not attend, but I'm sure you're familiar with Roger who was our president for at least the time I was involved. I was thinking about him recently and how he was doing but didn't know how to contact him anymore.

I'm curious about another thing - he's landed some players. But has he landed a team? Or, has he just got a bunch of guys who all want to be BMOC?

Prime is a motivational leader. He's not about X's and O's - he hires coaches to do that for him. So the question will be: who are his coaches/ coordinators and will they be successful? He brought at least one of his guys up with him from Jackson State - not sure how that's going to play out as its a pretty big jump from the SWAC to a P5 program. The odds are against him, but its has been done before.

** jumped over to the Buffs webpage, and it looks like he brought a bunch of his guys over, including WSU's own Brett Bartolone. To quote one of the all time great movies Dodgeball - "its a bold stategy Cotton..."

He has created a mercenary program full of kids sold on chasing NFL and NIL dreams. Has he sold a CU education? Is he going to develop any connection to the university? What is the locker room like? Right now the NCAA is allowing teams to fill their rosters without a limit. What does he do when it’s back to 25 new scholarship players per year and he can’t shuttle kids in and out like he has?

My favorite George Raveling quote: "Pullman isn't the end of the world, but you can see it from here."

That's what I think too. And he can't offer enough snaps or enough exposure to get them all to the NFL, so in a year or two I think we'll be talking about the number of players leaving Colorado. Doesn't mean they won't still have a decent team, but the mystique will be gone.

His “Im coming” speech will be “Im leaving” soon enough.

Did you by chance see Cam Newton’s speech/rant to the high school players that is making the rounds?

Balancing egos and developing chemistry is just as important as talent. In the 2003 Holiday Bowl, it was obvious that Texas was the far more talented group of players but WSU was the better team. It will be interesting to see if the coaching staff can get the players to work as a time or will they have serious breakdowns because wannabe stars are glory hounding.

We have to be honest. Yes, we have some geographic/demographic limitations, but we also have a crappy fan base too. Kansas St, Mississippi and Mississippi St. are in the middle of nowhere too, but they fill stadiums with regularity. We just do not have a sufficiently football/sport crazy fan base, ours is more a West Coast big screen TV group. Our TV rating are as good, if not better, than these schools, but they kill us on the paying/contributing customer front. All excuses aside, it is just a fact.

Those schools are a lot closer to population bases than Pullman but your points are well taken. Hell I'm just as guilty. Haven't been to a game for several years, although I'm only 3+ hours away. Haven't donated for many years. I care about and love my Cougs, but not enough to write a check or get off my couch and go to a game. Much as I loved it for 20 years as a season ticket holder.

To be fair... the Tri-Cities doesn't advertise WSU either.

Pasco hates Richland... Richland hates Kennewick... Kennewick hates Pasco...

Even over drinking on New Year's Eve wouldn't make the "threesome" work

I was at a track meet in Pasco last Saturday and saw quite a bit of WSU “swag”. Definitely more then I would have seen in Spokane where every one has become a zag fan.

Why would Tri-Cities advertise WSU? Especially when WSU doesn’t advertise WSU.

And, I’ll go further. West Pasco hates East Pasco. West kennewick hates East kennewick. All 3 hate West Richland for trying to crash the party. Everybody hates Richland for being smug, well-funded, and boring.

They used to host a dual meet for track and field at Fran Rish stadium. As a high school track kid, it was awesome and definitely fanned my WSU flame.

There was an 400 runner Jobert or something like that, with a punk haircut and Oakleys who tore up the track - still remember that to this day.

Didn't watch a lot of Colorado's spring game but from what I watched, their defense is a super hot mess right now. They might have cleaned it up after I watched but the early spring game defense was terrible. Be interesting to see how they perform this year.
