Current events thread perhaps?

Matt Gaetz is an odd looking dude. I don't like judging by media, but more by a person's votes and actions.

I can't really say Matt Gaetz was good, bad, or indifferent, but when you're pissing a lot of people off... you better have something to show you're right and you know what you're doing.

I swear he could've been on the football team from Revenge of the Nerds
Is there a better real life lookalike to “Butthead” out there? I think Gaetz is a total tool, but instead of trying to oust him, Ds should find a candidate that looks just like Bevis to debate with him on the house floor. Our government is a clown show let’s just accept it and make it entertaining.

I don’t think you get to make that call.

Is it possible he’s just ahead of the curve?

Couldn’t remember where the egg thread was. This was the most recent political thread

Now, about killing 290 million hens …
Post Falls WalMart egg shelves were about 90% empty yesterday when I walked by them. Prices were over $7 for whatever type they were. I didn't look to verify but I am guessing that the options that were sold out were the cheaper types.

Except that it's not true. THere's an effort to ban mRNA vaccines in Montana, Idaho, and Florida. Most of the other states on the list have done something to restrict vaccine mandates, but not the vaccines themselves. Most of the efforts against mandates are old news, and most of the "justification" supporting the bans in Montana and Idaho are based on conspiracy theories that have essentially no basis in fact.

Meanwhile, RFK and his cronies support a "pause" on distribution of vaccines for polio, tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis A and B, mostly over a concern that they contain small amounts of aluminum, which may be connected with a slight increase in asthma. Because obviously, there's no other way for anyone to be exposed to aluminum.

Cool, so we can agree that RFK Jr is an unqualified nominee?
What do you consider the qualifications for a cabinet nominee? That is an honest question. I'll predict that whatever you consider the qualifications to be, I will be able to name a President on both sides of the aisle that nominated someone "unqualified" that was confirmed by the Senate.

Some people think that the only factor that matters is if they can check off at least 2 "woke" boxes.

"Qualifications" is a term that we'd need to define clearly. I wont quibble that over the years (by my definition of qualified) there have been mostly unqualified appointments regardless of party in power.

For example, Obama's pick for Dept of energy seemed qualified being as he was a nuclear physicist. Even Alberto Gonzalez would be "qualified" being a lawyer. Perhaps not being a prosecutor would seem him less qualified than hundreds of other candidates. Ben Carson doesn't seem particularly qualified as the HUD secretary.

All that aside RFK Jr is neither a scientist, medical doctor/researcher or expert in ANY field for this post. In fact, he seems to be opposed to the stated mission of our national health institutions. By contrast Xavier Becerra at a bare minimum was an advocate for strengthening national public health laws and systems.

So we can agree that this is not a good pick to lead that department? Do you like RFK Jr in this role? Do you think he's qualified to run this? If so, why?

Because Trump won and this is who he picked.

You don’t get to make personnel decisions for the US President, Sparky.

Subject matter expertise doesn't seem to be required. Buttigieg's expertise in transportation was what, fixing potholes on the mean streets of South Bend? You used Ben Carson above for housing, and I agree. Historically, seems like the floor is pretty low. But I digress.

Trump campaigned on Making America Healthy Again. I see nothing wrong with the President exercising his constitutional authority to nominate RFK Jr. for HHS Secretary since he appears to share the same vision as the President. Could it be a disaster, sure. Could it actually improve health in this country, yes. RFK Jr ran a decent campaign as a third party candidate. Lasted longer than Biden anyway. So, I think it's fair to say he is capable of running an organization.

You may have noticed that cabinet members sometimes have what could be called informal duties that don't have much to do with their departments. Buttigieg is a good example. A big part of his job was media appearances, even Fox and Fox News, to speak on behalf of the Biden administration on anything and everything. In the link below he is on Fox News to comment on anti-Israel protests. Not much connection to transportation. So, the point is you don't know what RFK Jr's responsibilities will be, but here you are complaining about his qualifications for those undefined responsibilities.

How do we feel about treason?

CNN apparently saying US Military leaders meeting to defy the commander in chief.

This is bullish for WSU football, right?

No sourcing, no names, no information. Can't imagine that a social media poster with no accountability would make up a story to generate clicks...that would be unheard of!

Meanwhile, JD Vance says "Judges aren’t allowed to control the executive’s legitimate power." Actually, that's exactly what the judicial branch is supposed to do - limit the power of the executive and legislative branches.

JD Vance was exactly correct! You are apparently deciding to ignore the key word, which is "legitimate". The judicial branch is only supposed to guard against illegitimate overreaches of power. Rather like all those folks that screamed racist at anyone that spoke out or otherwise promotes the deportation of ILLEGAL aliens. If you are in favor of deporting illegal aliens, then by sneakily dropping the fact that they are illegal out of the situation, then BOOM! Racist!

My prediction is that the vast majority of these 40+ lawsuits/injunctions already filed against Trump and his administration will be thrown out or overturned. There is something wrong when the left goes judge shopping to get before a left appointed and ruling low level district court judge that goes and slams out a nationwide injunction affecting the proper functioning of government.

I would argue that “legitimate authority” does not include granting access to secure government systems to people from outside government, who aren’t employed by the government, and who haven’t been properly vetted.

It’s another example of Trump and his cronies picking and choosing which rules they want to follow. Unfortunately, the court pretty much gave him license to do that with some of their recent rulings.

We shall, see, won't we. Your statement about picking and choosing which rules to follow assumes that they have already broken rules, doesn't it? I have seen the Dems wailing and gnashing of teeth about it, but haven't seen any proof yet.

I would bet you that there are already PLENTY of other folks (not government employees) already within the organizations that are being looked at that have access to government systems. Consultants, contractors, etc. And since a bunch of the DOGE team reportedly have come from Space D and other defense contractors, it is quite likely that a bunch of them have been vetted enough to have a security clearance already. Musk himself has a Top Secret clearance and is considered a special government employee.

And claims are that the DOGE team does not have the ability to actually implement the savings that they are finding, we will have to see if it is true that they have read only access. Once again, I have seen nothing to prove otherwise.
