Drunk in an airport MWC opinion

Does being down 7 starters at least warrant an asterisk?

Also, what we saw was a preview of the team coming back. There are only so many asterisks you can have before the excuses have run out.

He is over his head faking it until he makes it.

The loss to Fresno State was a disaster waiting to happen, your top 2 receivers hit the portal, Bell is out, and the offensive coordinator left 10 days before the bowl game, so now your OL coach, who we both question, is calling your offensive plays, and the offense stunk for all those reasons. On the defensive side of the ball your top 3 linebackers are gone, injuries in the defensive backfield, so you lost a few starters there. WSU's margin of error was slim with all these pieces in place, without them they were doomed against an experience QB and a solid FSU team. The whole portal and sitting out bowl games stinks, and turning meaningless bowl games into worse games. Had the Cougs won that game I would have considered it a huge upset.

Dickert is a young first-time head coach who has showed promise taking over a messy situation. How about we give him 2-3 years to grow himself and the program?

That isn’t unfair. Question for you…. how many red flags do you need to see before he isn’t the guy?

Imo, you don’t need to collect red flags over 2-3 years. There comes a point when you’ve seen enough.

He isn’t a play calling savant.
He isn’t a scheme guru.
He isn’t a tremendous recruiter.
He hired poorly out of the gate.

What is it that he has that makes him worthy of one of the best 100 head coaching jobs in all of football?

So you'd fire him now? Amidst all of the conference uncertainty, you'd take on someone new to the program? No way in Hell would I do that.

This is one of those situations where you can see the merit in all sides. Dickert is a good DC and an organized head coach with some positive aspects. He doesn't have a huge network or name recognition, he doesn't appear to have Leach's preternatural ability to identify coaching or player talent, and on offense, we saw what he allowed to happen last year. He also bears responsibility for some of the attrition he has experienced, even if you're not the kind of person to say it's all on him no matter what. If he was the coach of Oregon State or something, if we're being honest with ourselves, we all know what our take would be about him. Apparently decent coach, doesn't scare you at all. That said, WSU isn't firing anyone for the performance he has had with the tumult of the past few years, and isn't going to buy him out and pay someone else. Even if it would, it's fair to see what happens with Arbuckle running the offense.

I didn’t write that. Don’t put words into my posts that weren’t written.

But since that’s the topic now…. I wouldn’t have hired him in the first place. But here we are. I wouldn’t fire him now. With the transfer portal I don’t think staff continuity is as valuable as it was for WSU, but it still does have value. That being said, he needs to win. He needs to show improved coaching. He needs to show that he is more than just a guy, that he has some “it” factor. I believe WSU needs to have very strong coaching and schemes that fit the kids it can get for it to maximize its success. He needs to show that his plan is the right plan. So far, not it.

I don’t believe you keep people just to keep people. Could there be a contract issue with a buyout that makes it so you don’t fire a coach? Sure. But then I’d ask why you are extending a 10-9 coach with 1 true season under his belt???

The guy needs to grow into the job. Can he do it? I think maybe, leaning towards no.

His loss to Fresno State is amazing. Build the statue! What is Chun waiting for????

To be fair Biggsy, a lot of folks discount the importance of bowl games in this era of opt outs, the transfer portal and the coaching merry-go-round.

Or put it this way:

Do you think the Cougs would've lost to Fresno if the Bulldogs had been the more short-handed team at the Jimmie Fallon Bowl?

Biggs,

You're a big "facilities are important" guy.

Aren't you excited Dr. Schultz and Chin are about to put shovels in the dirt for the new IPF?

I think Fresno is better coached team. I think WSU was a poorly coached team even with the starters. I’m gonna say it’s better than a coin flip for WSU but wouldn’t be surprised if Fresno still won.

Also, how many asterisks is too many?

I believe it’s needed. Im not peeing myself with excitement. The pace of progress at WSU is too slow. By the time the IPF is built, it will be 2100 and none of us will be alive to see it.

Hey bud, it's Shulz and Chun. And don't call him Charie Chan - I got roasted by the Board for doing that once!

I'm happy about the IPF, seeing as how I donated to it when Sterk was here. I better get my brick as promised. But just because we are FINALLY allegedly going to get it done does not exactly ut either one on a pedestal IMHO. More like "about goddam time".

You could say the same thing about Coach Jim Walden — and he stayed nine years, won 3 of 4 Apple Cups at one point and almost single-handedly forced UW to play at Martin Stadium.

Some coaches are successful just by the force of their personalities.

It's still early, but maybe CJD will be one of those coaches.

Thanks Loyal. Always have been a lousy speller, unfortunately.

Not sure what the issue was with comparing Mr. Chun to a beloved movie star. Hardly an insult 🤷‍♂️

Brand X had a story a couple weeks back speculating that a groundbreaking ceremony could be in store for when the Badgers visit Pullman on September 9.

For the money and the prestige of a Power 5 head coaching job, why are you hiring someone with his wild lack of a resume? “Maybe,” for the money involved, doesn’t cut it for me. You are welcome to disagree.

Bronco Mendenhall is sitting at his ranch in Montana without a job. Just saying.

He can have my job if I can go sit at the ranch in Montana. Seems like a fair trade.

Just read up on him. So why did he resign from Virgina? He was doing OK. Didn't get fired, and was quoted as saying he wasn't done coaching. Impressive record at BYU.

No clue. But he runs circles around Dickert.

There is no reason for a school to have a HC learning on the job when a guy like Mendenhall is out of work. None.

Hard to argue that logic. Chun made a knee jerk decision after we won the Apple Cup for the first time in 8 years. Wonder if he even picked up the phone and talked to anyone, including Mendenhall, after Rolodipshit got fired.

Another reason why I am not, and never have been, a Chun fan. Yeah we did great hiring Kamie and OK with Smith in BB. But FB drives the bus.

Ya know why Moos gets hired? Cause the coaches schools want will answer the phone when he calls. Some coaches wont work for some people. Who tf is Chun to top head coaching candidates?

If the WSU job were open today and the WSU AD called Urban Meyer, Moos gets him on the phone. Sterk or Chun gets voicemail.

I would love to see the list of interviews Chun had when the job was open. Hell, even seeing the list of coaches he approached would be interesting.

My guess is that it would be generous to call it a “list”

I am not an idiot. I have forgotten more football than you know. He deserves little credit for being a 10-9 coach. He is white f’ing rice. He isn’t a play calling savant. He isn’t some guru of scheme. He is a guy that was in the right place at the right time to get bumped up by an AD choosing the easiest path possible.

If you wanna worship at the alter of 10-9, go ahead.

You’re a f’ing dope.

I absolutely believe that you've forgotten more football than I know. It shows in a lot of the posts you make. You've forgotten so much about football that you end up sounding like a worn out, senile, a$$hat who remembers the good old days when they wore leather helmets.

Is that the best you can do? Sad.

You just figuring this out? Hell I have known that for years.
It is what it is. The disappointing aspect of it is that the majority of the frequent posters on here go back years and years together.

Despite that, we have the constant barrage of personal attacks, political condescension, disparaging remarks, comments about people's kids and families, personal ID leaks like names and phone numbers being released. Then people have the audacity to argue and mix in social points about the "greater good."

I've always known people are full of $hit, but it's unfortunate to have it displayed front and center on my alumni fan page. There's no refuge online I guess.

Hello pot, this is kettle….
Bwahahaha! At least you admit you are the kettle.

And to reply to Coug Patrol, the board has gotten a lot better since you-know-who (starts with a Ya) disappeared. Now if we could just chase off all the Trump lovers, things would be lovely.

How fancy does the practice facility need to be? Glorified warehouse??? Ever see a Costco go up? Done in 20 mins.
Can't disagree, but there still are not shovels in the ground. If they're waiting until the Fall to put shovels in the ground they're really going to hold up work with weather.

True story. Big tilt up with a little personality added to it would have been a lot more economical and much faster and done just fine. The amount of money wasted on college campuses is insane.

You only get to do it once so you better do it right. That being said, it is a field inside a building. Add some offices, meeting rooms, maybe a locker room and gym….. shine it up and call it done.

And if we are being honest, the arms race has changed from facilities to NIL $. Having nice stuff matters, having more NIL dollars will likely take you further.

If they're smart, they'll give some thought to including features that will allow for an epic Fieldhouse II experience.

It's perfectly located. Adjacent to the stadium, RV Lot #1, Ferdinands, etc. There should be a massive indoor / outdoor beer garden, food trucks in the nice weather months, food stands inside the IPF in the cold season. The open field where the ESPN Game Day crew set up should also be a game day beer garden with live music.

This is easy revenue for WSU and a great game-day improvement for the fans. The lowest hanging fruit.

Gameday set up in the RV lot, not the lawn across the street where most of the fans were. I would hardly call it an open field. I was there.
