Country and Western
First, that girl would be a great sister. Enjoyed the interview.
And I also enjoy many of the posters on this board. Thanks, LoneStar. While the "both kinds of music, country and western" line was known before the Blues Brothers, it got legs when that movie came out. Still brings a smile.
But living in OK & TX for many years right out of WSU, I learned the truth of the comment. There really is traditional western music, and it bears little or no resemblance to country. If you want to get a flavor of what I'm referring to, youtube Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Classic western swing group. Back in the day they would play dance gigs all over the southwest, playing music to which you could two step and (yes) even jitterbug.
If you like music and really want to get a laugh, check out Bob Wills' version of "Milk Cow Blues" on youtube, from 1946. All the western (mostly white) groups crossed paths regularly with the blues (mostly black) groups in greater LA/TX/OK/AR/TN. Like musicians of all times, they were very comfortable with each other. When they would jam (which happened more often than you might think, late at night/early in the morning, after a gig if they were playing near each other), usually a blues group would play their version of a western song for the western band and vice versa. The Texas Playboys took it a step further and actually recorded "Milk Cow Blues" (as a song, probably the most popular example of this niche genre) as a western version of a blues song. They didn't write it, but their version is my favorite out of the 30-40 groups (many of them rock groups) that have recorded it over the years. I'm not sure how they managed to record it without laughing (some of the groups that have recorded it can be heard laughing in the background), but if you like blues and have a sense of humor, I highly recommend it. I listen to it now and then when the freeway is plugged up and I need to smile.
