If UW can hire John Richardson

JM is a gifted athlete who's talents are being wasted on possibly the worst play calling I've seen in a decade. Arbuckle is out of his depth, plain and simple.
This.

Our offense seems to be "see if Mateer can find a running lane. If not, see if he can pass." It's sandlot football, and that's not what it should be.

At W. Kentucky, they ran a ton of trips to one side when Arbuckle was there. They ran a lot of crossing routes - I'd almost call them tangles - out of those, with mixed levels, mesh, stops, wheels, etc. Defense had no idea what they were going to run. There were quick, short routes, intermediates, and deep sideline routes on every play. And then they'd run out of it. What the hell happened to that?

With Mateer, we should be running read option with a ton of short routes. We should now be running what we always wished we ran when Leach was here. Short, high percentage throws, offset by a back who can run between the tackles and a QB who can be gone in a second. I f'n dare the defense to rush 3 and drop 8 now.

Except that they almost can, because we're trying so hard to keep Mateer in the pocket...which is what the defense wants.

A good coach knows what he has, and works with it. Arbuckle is not doing that.

Cmon Gibbons Parker isn’t a typical freshman. He wants the ball, he plays with an edge, he runs hard, and he picks up blitzes and catches the ball. He plays like a RS junior. Hes plenty capable of 15-20 touches a game especially when a defense isn’t capable of stopping him. He had 12 carries against FSU averaging 6 a carry. I can almost promise you the way he was running with 5+ more touches and being more involved in the flow of the game he would have broke a 30/40+ yarder. He’s that kind of weapon we haven’t had in the backfield since Borghi. And Arbuckle ignored him for 2/3 of the game.
If we was getting 15-20 per game, how many games does he last? And he dropped an easy one against Fresno.

This all makes sense...UNLESS, arbuckle senses/knows mateer has limitations in grasping the whole offensive scheme and is dumbing down the play-calling to what mateer is capable of at this time. That's all I have to say about that.

I don’t have a crystal ball but he passes the eye test. He doesn’t look like a skinny freshman who’s not ready for CFB. He was punishing FSU defenders late in the game. And he’s not running into NFL bodies in the SEC every week he’s playing against MWC kids who he matches up with physically. In general I’d say he should have no problem handling that load.

That said he’s playing the majority of snaps at RB. Is it really that much of a difference slamming into a blitzing LB on pass pro vs running through the A Gap as far as wear on your body? Think the carry quota stuff is overdone for backs, theres a toll on your body every play whether you get the ball or not.

This makes sense unless you look at the actual play calling and JM's skill set and see that passing out of the pocket may be is the weakest part of his game, yet Arbuckle insists on it.

Yeah, I kinda prefer him throwing on the run. Seems his accuracy is more consistent, drawing upon his baseball skills. Taihtsat

We have a TE. We have a REALLY GOOD running back. We have a QB that can run. We have 3 receivers that are legit threats.

Roll out.
Play action.
Option.
Spread it and draw

Sending guys long is awesome, but don't live it like its our 90's because Mateer isn't a gunner

Nothing of what I just said needs us running up the gut... up the gut... and then up the gut again.

Not until the defense is tired in the 2nd half anyway.

You need inside run attempts. Even if the defense stops it for little or no gain. Why? Because it keeps the defense honest. As soon as you never run the ball between the tackles the DC can change his personnel to get more speed on the field. Make him play 2 interior linemen. Make him play a run stuffing middle linebacker. Making a defense defend the entire field includes inside run and stresses the defense that much more.

Not against it "responsibly", but dude...

I felt like we have become as stubborn as Leach vs. fuw and/or Cal

I dunno. That’s pretty stubborn.

Wanna see the offense go? 12 personnel. Give the run game more gaps. Give the OL more double teams. Turn Mateer loose to run open the passing game. Or keep doing the Went To Shit offense where everything breaks down and now your QB runs the ball like a 1 man offense.
