So while looking for hope a silver lining...something to do while I'm drinking here I wanted to see FBS teams that came back after a loss to an FCS team.

2013 Oregon State. Loses to Eastern Washington... Goes Bowling Beats Boise State
2013 Kansas State - Loses to North Dakota State...Goes bowling beats Michigan in the Buffalo Wild Wings bowls
2007 Michigan .... Loses to Appalachian State.... Goes Bowling and beats Tim Tebow/Urban Meyer in the Capitol One Bowl

So that's 3 coaches Riley, Bill Snyder, and Loyd Carr who all lost to an FCS team and still went bowling...

Just trying to find some shred of hope. So there's that.

Well clearly, we can conclude that we are going bowling this year. ;)

I like the optimism but Eastern Washington, Appalachian State, and North Dakota State are all I-AA powerhouses (especially NDSU). Portland State is not.

Having said that, anything can happen, I guess. Maybe when expectations are near zero, the team will play well?

I agree with al that. I think the weather..lack of stadium energy...players playing soft all contributed. Maybe they needed this to wake up. There are a lot of good players on the team. We all know they are better than this. They know they are better than this. Hopefully it makes them determined and hardened.

Well we weren't the only FBS team or even Power 5 team to lose to an FCS yesterday.

Kansas lost to South Dakota State
Wyoming lost to North Dakota

so there is that...

Thank you. I needed that.

Eastern and North Dakota are contending for a National Championship. PSU was projected to win one game this year.

That game was Coach Bruce Barnum's FIRST GAME EVER as a head coach... at ANY level.

Still at a loss for words. Are we really that bad? I don't think so. This has something to do with the coaches and player's heads... clearly...

I don't think people projected Portland State to have a 4.5 40 Gatorade Player of the Year BYU transfer at QB either.

If he was any good, Leach would have offered. Certainly somebody in the Pac, or Wac, or Mountain West... Heck, he didn't even get a sniff from Baldwin at Eastern... now all of the sudden after one game from a rookie coach in his coaching début, he's in line for the Heisman... sure.

He was 7-12 passing for 61 yards and zero TD's

During his decorated high school career, Kuresa set state records in Utah for total yards (12,917), passing yards (10,951), touchdown passes (101) and completions (751).

However, several major schools contacted him during the recruiting process last fall, including LSU, Auburn, Michigan and Oregon State.

People looked at him...big schools looked at him but because he was 6' they didn't go for him. He'll be a lot better than people think.

That's well and good.

Still not a good reason for a loss to Portland State. Don't think there is one, personally.

We shouldn't have lost. We are a better team than that, but don't sell them short on what they did.

They ran the ball in crappy weather with a good mobile QB, and our defense sucked.
When we tried to do our normal thing we had players drop the ball and drives stalled and it all went to hell.

That's the story of the game. When we ran it we were up 10-0...When they ran it they won 24-17.

We also gave them the ball on the 10 yard line...everything we did in the second half was asking them to beat us.

We keep saying "our defense sucked". But in the first half, when they were running at us and mixing in a pass, we held them down to nothing. Not getting any of those three or four deflections we caused early in the game hurt, too.

But in the second half, when they started running misdirection and keeping on the handoff, we kept playing like they'd revert back to what hadn't worked- it's terrible that the adjustment didn't get made on that, and our awful tackling only aided their deal.

Same with not just grinding that team into dust with the run, when that looked effective. Same with apparently having a special teams that only fails to match last year's ineptitude by virtue of an actual kick returner.

From a coaching standpoint, it was the anti-USC game.

Paris Penn, run
Steven Long, run
Steven Long, run
Steven Long, run
Paris Penn, run
Steven Long, run... touchdown... game over.

The last 6 plays -in-a-row... on the game winning drive.
