Game thread ~ Leach vs. de Laura

With 1:06 in the 3rd, 19/35 for 193, a TD and 3 INTs. 2 runs for -25. And they’re down 8.

50% passer with 3 picks. That is a shitty night.
I'm glad he's no longer our problem. Biggest sin of a QB is unpredictability and De Laura has been all over the place tonight. Running around the backfield without a plan and heaving the ball down field. Some of those attempts have worked but it's also lead to a couple self sacks and a few picks. If he were able to simply have a plan when he rolls out Arizona is probably ahead.

He had so much promise but honestly the problem was between the ears with him.

Going to Arizona was dumb. He should have picked a Sun belt team or something and reinvented himself somewhere else.

Leach did a lot for us. Mississippi State looks decent, but I don’t know if the SEC will be as forgiving as we were during his rebuild. He’s a good coach though.

I’m just happy we beat Wiscy at home. All of this is just extra entertaining chaos for me.

Street ball qb.

His backup came in for the last drive. That kid has some talent and will probably be starting by the time we play them in November.

Amazing what happens when the HC doesn’t rig the QB competition for you.

Maybe he will get a new deal from a FCS school? He can roll out at halftime of UA’s last game too.

Me being 50% nicer cause he helped WSU win the AC.

Does anyone know the real back story or reason why de Laura left?

My theory was first....JDL made bad choices ~ off field issues, (DUI).

Second, JDL and Dickert just didn't mix cohesivly, (oil and water), and as a result, wasn't a good fit for what coach is trying to build here.

Anyone?

I doubt we'll ever know, but I posited that exact same scenario when explaining it to my wife last night.

Leach was a mix of player's coach and disciplinarian.
Rolo was 100% players coach.
CJD is a disciplinarian.

JdL was not long for CJD's team, especially after his legal issue, and I don't personally believe it was that big of a secret. I'm not sure how the Zona thing was initiated, but no doubt he was making handshakes over Xmas break and intentionally jaked the bowl game.

Yeah I’m curious about this too. Chicken or egg? Did JDL know they were looking at Morris/Ward or did he already have one foot out the door before any of that materialized.

I mean he sure seemed to play the AC like he was coming back, planting the flag and all…

I’ll of course root against him in our game but as I say with any athlete who goes to battle as a Coug I appreciate his contribution to the program. Whatever the scenario was with the breakup he hasn’t disgraced the program IMO.

Excellent answer. Plus, when you grow up in Hawaii, and November hits in Pullberg... Pima/Maracopa County feels more like home. But, the real reason is what you stated, above.

Interesting what the die hard Wildcat fans think now. Week 1, JdL looked great. Today, not so good, and they're sitting at 1-1, with a huge conference schedule ahead of them.

I often wondered, why would JdL choose to Arizona, where they were 1-11 last year, and the cupboards are bare and you're a basketball school?

Didn't he get NIL $$? Would he have gotten anywhere close to what he received at UA if he stayed in Pullman? Doubtful.

But JdL is a mixed bag - I recall being extremely frustrated with him one week to watch him come out and play like a world beater the next. He seems to have focus issues - either he's on or he's off. But what I do like is seeing him assess the defense pre-snap and make decisions based on what the defense is showing him. I didn't see any of that with CW yesterday, but that may be intentional.

That was painful to watch, both in terms of JDL's execution and his body language.

I've always had a soft spot for him, I think mainly because I'm raising boys and I can see in JDL that he was brought up in a tough environment, likely without a lot of quality male role models. You don't have to be a clinical psychologist to see where he's likely headed. I hope someone is able to reach the kid.

JMO, but I don't think de Laura would have made it through the first season under Leach. As soon as he missed a meeting, f'ed around in practice, didn't show up for class....

You get the picture.

Maybe, maybe not.

CML seemed to pull something out of people, especially qb's. He was Leach's recruit, after all.

But certainly based on what we've seen from him as far as maturity level your scenario seems most likely.

Is that the real story? Didn't show 🤔 up for the second half as well.

After they beat down SDSU, I was a little more concerned about our game there in November.

Who knows if JDL will still be the starter, but I am confident now our d line can wreck havoc on their o line.
