I think Harrell would be a slam dunk hire. Continues the Air Raid, but modernizes it a bit. Has connections out west with his time at Wazzu and USC. Played professional football. Was probably the most successful coach under Leach. Can bring some solid USC coaches with him that have less job certaintly under Helton. Hire him for 3.25 million and then you can afford a really solid DC for 1 million and still have a big chunk of cash for the rest of his staff. He would be option 1.

I would be happy with Harrel and Gerald Alexander. HC and DC/assistant head coach.

Pull the trigger now.... A hire like this would most likely keep our team intact and bring much stability to this situation. Not to mention sending a message to the recruits who've sign LOI's that the football philosophy they signed on for, won't suffer grave alterations.

At this point I can't think of anyone better than Harrell.

I'm sure there are many who are as good. But better? Probably not. And when you consider that the new coach will be taking over an Air Raid roster on offense, Harrell looks good.

Agreed. The Air Raid has been invested in, get someone from the Leach tree who has the opportunity to be a better coach than him. If Harrell kills it and leaves in 4-5 years, move on to the next. This offense ain’t going anywhere.

It would depend on who Grinch brought in as DC. Grinch would assemble a good recruiting staff, IMO.
If he really wants to be in Pullman...he'd make a fine HC especially if he did bring in good coaches that could recruit.

I see it as the exact opposite- who Grinch would bring in as OC.

Admittedly Doba could be affecting my thought process too much. But, defensive oriented coaches seem to prone to "protecting the defense." I think that's ****ing insane in general and especially at WSU. And I never really understood what that meant other than they want to be conservative. We don't have the athletes, and never will, to grind other teams down. Leach's offenses put up 37 points per game and around 33 minutes of TOP. That seems like the defense has been pretty well protected to me.

Doba's problem wasn't the offense.

Not managing his the lazy alum assistants (probably because Doba was a career assistant and didn't want to bully them?) and bad special teams.

And his lazy alum assistants not recruiting.

Agreeing to the Auburn body bag game in 2006 probably cost him a bowl game.

Remember the initial succession plan for Doba around 2003?

Poor management of the staff wasn't the only problem.

That's what I meant to type.
I don't know where Football Scoop would gain this inside knowledge (link?), but that would be a good start to what could be a well paid quality staff. Mastro knowing and transitioning staff. Wilson knows how to coach and both are excellent recruiters. Good recruiting coaches recognize other good recruiters and could recommend them.

I thought someone posted on here a while back that Harrell hated Pullman and couldn’t get out fast enough? If not, he would be a refreshing change.

Pullman has always been a challenge and that’s not changing anytime soon if ever. I think we all have liked Harrell since he joined the staff. He is great with QBs and knows the offense. I’m with gibbons on going the defense route. They typically are too conservative and that’s not what we need.

Make Harrell and offer that makes it really hard to say no. He’s on a sinking ship at SC and he’s not getting that job without some experience as a head coach. Might as well get it in Pullman.
