I'm curious if the Cougs are considering the "flashing" LED light upgrades at Martin

seems to be the trend these days. Sounds like it's not cheap (3M+) for the larger stadiums that did it. We should also do a sound system upgrade to include speakers.

I personally think the IPD design needs to be completely scrapped and we should go with tilt-up, warehouse type construction. You could build it for a fraction of the cost, aesthetically cool, and complete the project.

YOU could build it for a fraction of the cost. With state purchasing, contracting, design-build process, and prevailing wage requirements, forget it. Even assembly of a pre-fab structure will cost millions.

Besides, tilt-ups don't look cool.

Tilt ups can look better than you think. I've scene some molds that can give it good characteristics. I'm not thinking "smooth wall" warehouse look.

Can you provide and example. I'm not sure I know to what you're referring.

Great, another way WSU can overpay for basic construction

What "flashing LED lights" are you talking about? And why does Martin Stadium need them?

These. And they should be added because they are super cool, recruits, players, and fans love them, and most major teams have been adding them lately and it’d just be one more thing for us to fall behind on if we don’t add them.

I tend to agree that having an awesome stadium, with all these elements, might be more important than an IPF that doesn't get used that often. We still have the bubble. Which is why i think we need to look at other structural options to get this done.

The IPF is critical for myriad reasons (all other northern P5 schools, and many G of 5 schools, have them). It's important to recruiting and will benefit numerous sports.

Lighting like Bama's is an example of something I believe WSU *should* consider prioritizing and being an early mover on, subject to first completing critical things like the IPF. Empty seats aren't the answer, but measures to make the stadium and gameday experience more impressive are. They also make more financial sense. That means things like cool intros and experiences -- the ribbon board can be used as part of this, too -- that are relatively inexpensive, and spending stadium upgrade funds on things that look good on TV and when attending in-person, like making the north side look more impressive and closing in the east end. That could include high-margin seating like club seats or more suites. This is consistent with what most other P5 teams are doing in their stadium upgrades in today's era.

We'll add them eventually, if for no other reason than the power draw and expense will be decreased and there will be a good ROI.

But, I already hate the LED ribbons they have at the top of the stands. I like the scoreboards that are in them, but the brightness and flashing of them is a distraction when I'm trying to watch the field.

I'm not epileptic and that gave me a seizure.

No thanks.

But if the kids like it, then hey...™

Looks cool, but do they work all that well for day games? If not how many games would they be effective in and how much do they cost?

Too me, it looks and feels like NFL.

It may look cool to a high school recruit, but to me, it looks and feels like NFL.

When I go to a Mariner's game, I feel they "have to entertain the crowd". I think the NBA does it too. Always have to be entertained.

This is why many people prefer college over pro, because it's not the NFL.

That isn't happening....and probably at this point nor should it.

Ed, where is this being reported and why do you think it’s a good idea??

425 reiterates why the new IPF is necessary. Do you think the bubble is sufficient going forward? Seemed like when Rick Dickson got that “facility” in place it wasn’t a 50-year solution.

That gave me a migraine.
Amen to that!

Of all the things that WSU Athletics needs, flashing lights is WAAAAY down the list. Stop blasting us with all the excess stimuli, just having way too much of the loud non-music stuff is bad enough. Seems like there is somewhat less of that than there was a few years ago, thank God for small favors.

Remember that old saying-"If you don't have steak then you sell them the sizzle"? How about getting the steak instead of that useless sizzle? Invest that money in NIL for the offensive and defensive lines and it will help the program much more.

Do you guys REALLY need that annoying flashing to get you jacked up about the game? So much of TV, movies, and video games is all about the sizzle-explosions, action, explicit shooting, wild special effects, etc. Does the youth today only have an attention span of 17 nanoseconds without constant external stimulus? Seriously!

Now GET OFF MY LAWN!!! :)

Cause if the big boys keep raiding our conference, guess who the two teams are standing there looking at each other and saying "what about me? WSU and Oregon State.

So why spend that kind of money if we are in the Mountain West Conference?

So. The thread goes from out cooling your kids to "on becoming your parent" to Debbie Downer. (Ed).

I get what you’re saying, but it’s like Biggs and Tron say — “Think Small, Be Small”

WSU has some of the best TV ratings on the West Coast. The Cougs have been ranked in the Top 25 at some point in many of the recent seasons. Even Kyla Bonagura from ESPN said the GameDay in Pullman was one of the best they’ve ever had the pleasure of hosting.

Don’t you think these other conference commissioners know these things?

Now doesn’t seem like the time to cut corners on the IPF or enhancing the stadium, whether that means more luxury suites or expanding capacity to ~50,000.

Agree on the IPF...disagree on stadium expansion. Oregon is the only game that was a sellout. According to the website, here is a list of our attendance this year:

Idaho: 25233
CSU: 23611
Oregon: 33058
Cal: 23021
Utah: 21180

If we were averaging 30k per game and selling out half our games, I'd be keen on stadium expansion. With the uncertain money situation that we are looking at, it would be insane to spend money changing our stadium right now. To be fair, Utah would have had a crowd around 30k if it were a weekend game.

Biggs and Tron aren't willing to donate the money that it takes to actually quit thinking small. I do believe that we should think about getting plans put together for our next stadium improvements so that we can move quickly when the time is right....but that time isn't now. Contrary to what people think, big empty football stadiums in July don't get recruits to come join your program. Gonzaga plays in a juco sized arena for basketball and pulls in some of the best basketball talent in the country.

You know what the commissioners know...WSU brings nothing to the table financially. USc always struggled with WSU cause they saw us sucking on the conference tit.

Think about where are money came to hire Leach? It was not donor money, it was the Pac 12 money.

Ed, I'll defer to your knowledge of all things WSU, but this just seems overly pessimistic

This is so right on.

I play ROLEPLAYING, computer, video, console, etc, games.

I like, love the Bioware, Black Isle, Infinity Engine, TORMENT game.

And I like it because of the EPIC STORY.

This game USUALLY IN THE PAST, WAS, IS STILL considered the BEST STORY RPG OF ALL TIME.

It was made, came out in 1999/2000. It has a LOT of text to read. The Epic Story is about a main character named the NAMELESS ONE, who, that CANT PERMANENTLY DIE, IS IMMORTAL, and is trying to find a way to end his curse by exploring SIGIL the city of doors, portals, and all the planes of existence in the multi verse.

Like I said, pretty EPIC.

But today's kids, adults, etc, say "I don't want a story", "It's graphics suck"( I disagree , I think the graphics are still good even now), "There is too much text to read, I don't want to read that much", " where are the VOICE OVERS, I want VOICE OVERS, not more text", "Where is the 3D ANIMATION", " THIS GAME SUCKS".

The Enhanced Edition of this game that was released back in 2018, is not liked by kids, young adults.

And your right their attention span is only 17 nano seconds.

It's sad, because their are some truly epic stories, games, books, movies, that kids and their 17 nanosecond attention span, won't, can't enjoy.

How things have changed from when I was a kid.

Ditto! I feel exactly the same ;)

That's all I have to say about that!

Change "KU" to "UW" and I could get into some sandstorm.
Makes me truly bummed that I was never present for any Cougar basketball games that even closesly resembled that. I think the biggest game was the snapple bottle game, but even then I think the upper howl was only sparsely populated, but I could be wrong. Tbh, I was way too drunk and focused on the game to pay attention.

The WSU-KSU game in 2010 (right before the Apple Cup) had a pretty good turnout. I was in the upper corner for that one. It was a close game with a heck of a lot of energy.

Below is one of my favorite videos from a WSU game that I wish that I had been at.
