Another guard we have "reached out to". I'm not thinking there's much to most of these players for one reason or another. Bigger programs end up involved, we don't have the space, fit, time, etc. Assuming he's a sit out transfer unless the waiver thing comes through.

Kent offered Hyder and he visited in the fall so there is some program familiarity.

Following the Twitter Trail: A pastor(Might Probably be his), said that WSU might be the one, and another tweeter said welcome to the Coug Family.

When you combine that with how he seems to have loved his official Visit, combined with pictures of him wearing coug gear, saying Go Cougs, and a pic of him sitting at the College Gameday Set at Pullman(Also in the Twitter Trail)

All that combined together shows there is a pretty ok chance that he might probably sign with WSU.

Also WSU getting Jackson, and the rest of the class, and Smith, etc, might help land him as well.

So WSU might probably has a ok, good chance to get him.

The only problems is that there is some stiff competition for him.

And WHAT IF AJ, and Jarret both want to sign with WSU?

Only got room for one of them. And both have a ok chance to sign with WSU.

The only ways I can see to get both, if they both want to sign with WSU, is if either CJ and Kunc go, or if Kunc, and a guard at the end of the bench go.

Which might happen.

But if CJ doesnt leave early to Draft, then can only see either Kunc or a guard leaving, but not both leaving.

So probably only have room for 1 of them, not both of them.

But if both want to sign with WSU, good problem to have in not having enough room for both of them.

I don't know who is a "guard at the end of the bench" on scholarship, unless it's Ryan Rapp. And I don't want him to leave at this point, I think he has some very good potential. It's interesting to see that Smith appears to be continuing to recruit, even without spots open. (Obviously, CJ going pro will open an additional spot). I wonder if any of the signees are at risk of getting into school? Just speculating and hoping it's not true. Maybe Marvin Cannon is thinking about the transfer portal? He isn't a guard but that would open a spot.

Glad Cougar

Marvin can play the 2,3 spots, and he has played the 2 for WSU in the past, under Kent. And he is about 6 ft, 4 and 1/2 in, which is guard height, and he drives, slashes, finishes, scores, etc, like a guard, if he looks like, plays like, etc, a guard, he is a guard, so he is a guard

I wouldnt want to lose Rapp as well normally, and I am not saying Rapp is that guard at the end of the bench, but if it were Rapp, Jarret Heard is a upgrade over Rapp that is athletic, is a good passer, shooter, scorer, Assist, Semi pure PG, driver, slasher, plays better defense, has lateral quickness that better then Rapp. I would take Jarret any day, time over Rapp.

Now Cannon is a different story, next year Cannon has tbe potential to be a starter/best 6th man in conference.

At extreme Best Jarret and Cannon are equal. Otherwise Cannon os probably better then Jarret.

I would take Cannon any time, any day over Jarret.

I'd venture a guess that Cannon has been passed up by other players on the roster, especially if Elleby returns. Not sure where his minutes come in.

Koulibaly
Bonton
Elleby
Miller
Vovo

Probably start with Williams, Bamba, Jackson, Kunc/Chatfield/Agobidi, and Rodman getting minutes off the bench. Maybe Rapp gets some time as a ball handler or Cannon plays some defense but it's more likely they sit at the end of the bench for most of the season. With Hensens departure, I see Smith giving more minutes to a better shooter who also plays scrappy D in Rodman.

Bottom line is that IF CJ stays, 2 more scholly's are needed, and there are only the following candidates: Kunc, Rapp, Shead.

Cannon is too good to lose.

Not Vova.

Etc.

Almost everybody else is a starter or 6th man/key bench player.

So either 2 out of either Kunc, Rapp, Shead, etc.have to leave, or if you get 2 more recruits that want to sign with WSU, you have to actually sign 1 less, and only sign 1 of them, instead of signing both of them.

Now maybe your right that maybe 1,2 are academic risk and wont make it in. I hope not because that would mean losing a STUD player from this class, but I doubt it, but I dont know.

Its nice that Smith is still recruiting. But at some point he is going to have to quit.

You cant, or shouldnt have 9.10 recruits in a recruiting class, and having almost everybody on the team leave, so that can replace with supposedly upgraded recruits.

Because of that I trust that Smith will probably stop recruiting for the current class after, if the next 1,2 commits, sign with WSU.

Yep Kunc, and Rapp are the end of bencher's that probably have to go in order to make room for Jarret and AJ, if CJ stays.

Also my starting 5 is:

1. Bonton

2. Noah Williams(Too good to replace with Jefferson, unless Jefferson replaces him mid to late season)

3. Elleby(if he stays of course. Good chance he will stay)

4. Jackson(Yeah he is a freshman, but Smith said he will give him a LOT of minutes, so he either starts or is the 1st big off the bench. Its either him or Agobidi, Miller as good as he has been is either not as good or wont be as good as Jackson/Agobidi)

5. Vova, could go with either Jackson or Agobidi if Miller starts at 4(Jackson will be starting at either 4 or 5 spots or 1st big off bench by end of season.)

I'm not sure if AJ is coming. His whole recruitment has been under the radar so who knows. Might as well keep Kunc around before we take a younger version of the same player.

Shead was a grad transfer this past year. He's not an option. One other consideration regarding Hyder, unless the NCAA rules to allow immediate eligiblity for all transfers (not just grad transfers), he'll have to sit a year, I think. So if he takes Rapp's scholarship, for instance, then that leaves WSU a player short on the bench. Personally, Rapp showed enough to me last year (helped us beat UCLA) that I'd keep him around, even over Hyder. He's plenty athletic and don't forget that he missed the entire preseason and played hurt most of the regular season.

Imo Jackson starts from day one. Volvo had his moments and had one or two decent games but I saw nothing that would scream for sure starter. I think Volvo comes off the bench at least one more year and I’m not really sure he will see that much court time. He is big and can provide some rim protection but with the addition of Jackson and Agobidi I’m not sure he plays much. The only real bigs we had last year was him and Pollard and coach still played small instead of going to Volvo. To me that speaks volumes. Also I would rather keep Rapp and Kunc than either of the above mentioned pair. I could see Cannon leave because I don’t see his minutes expanding much over last year, especially if CJ stays.

I like Vova but also realize he's going to have a tough time against certain match ups next year and potentially through his career. I agree Jackson has the potential to start day 1. We only have highlights to go on but he showed a pretty impressive ability to score all over the floor from inside to mid-range and potentially out to 3s. Abogidi has great upside but he looked a bit raw in the NBA Academy I watched in early January. Some of the clips out there of him are really impressive though but it could take him some time to adjust.

What's great is if we can keep everyone healthy we actually have 4 bigs (including Chatfield) 6-10" or taller and a potential stat stuffer in Tony Miller.

EDIT: I'm wondering with Cannon what his options are to transfer if he's not able to finishing a degree before next fall. Even if he does have a redshirt available he's probably not attractive with only 1 year left to play.

Rapp's not going anywhere IMO. He won or kept us in some games last year.

Players in the rotation Kunc, Rapp, Abogidi, Rodman, Volvo. I could and would like to see one of the Freshmen Guards Bamba or Jefferson contribute this year but I’m not convinced it will happen

You could be right, but Smith himself says he wished he would've given Vova a lot more playing time. That leads me to believe he'll play a lot more minutes next year, even if he doesn't start.

Smith has said that more than once after the season. He said that they played their best basketball of the season and that was with Vova getting significant minutes. I have no idea if he plays or doesn't play a lot next season. But, there are a lot of players in all sports that make huge leaps in their second season.

He played significant minutes in a few games and answered the call nicely at the end of the season. Which really bodes well for his potential playing time next year. He only played over 20 minutes twice and both those games Pollard didn’t play at all. He is imo a player than can and will be faced with challenges matching up with players in the PAC 12, but he will also present his own match up problems for other teams. so hopefully that scale tilts our way. One thing to also think about especially when talking about development of our young players is the fact there will be no spring workouts or summer workouts. We might see who is self motivated and puts the time in on their own.

When I have time, I will have to go back and listen to and read the interviews that Coach Smith did after the season to make sure I am remembering correctly. Those of us who think Vova is in the plans as a major contributor next season is not off of our own scouting or our watching of him this past season. It is basically what Coach Smith himself has said.

I remember Smith saying my bad for not playing Vovo more during the season after the ASU game. He really started to impact games the more PT he got and was a great 1-2 punch with Tony Miller.

As the game moves towards lay ups and threes, Vovo does a a fantastic job of altering shots near the rim. I don't see Jackson starting of him or Miller, though I can see him taking a ton of minutes in Pac-12 play.

I see Jackson eventually replacing miller. Miller is 6 ft 8 in, about 213 to 223 and is a semi stat stuffer at the 4.

Jackson is 6 ft 10.5 in, 235, 7 foot wingspan. And he will probably be a semi stat stuffer.

I would rather have Vova at the 5, and Jackson at the 4, or Jackson at the 5 and Miller at the 4.

Miller FOR now in the SHORT term better because of his experience, etc, then Jackson.

But sometime between now and the end of tbe season, Jackson is going to be better then Miller.

Also by the end of the season, Vova at the 5, and Jackson at the 4, with Miller 1st big off bench will probably be best.

Vova is in Pullman with Cannon. The only 2 players that didn't go home. My guess is that Cannon finishes up his degree. Coach Smith said his ideal lineup was Vova, Miller, and that let CJ play the 3 which is his natural spot.

The hard press for a Transfer PG continues so there has to be someone that would leave.

Kinda like when Dick was here, its big-time basketball, read his book. People with mystery back problems, etc, etc. Always making room for the player that was needed.

I am assuming it's going to be tough to beat the 2 California schools for Hyder but at least he already has taken a visit.

Would you rather have Hyder or Flowers? I understand Flowers is only for one year but he might be able to provide more immediate help next year.

If Elleby does stay in the NBA draft we need someone to come in and fill some of that void. I agree Flowers has a better chance to give us immediate offensive punch plus Hyder at this point would probably have to sit a year unless the 1-time waiver goes in for next year.

I usually would opt for the long-term but we lose a lot especially if Elleby doesn't return. It's a tough decision point but I think I would rather Flowers although I wonder if he duplicates Bonton. That could end up an issue.

Slow day. It seems we are a lot less active with potential guard transfers than we were over the last couple of weeks. Might mean absolutely nothing but Hyder's older brother is headed to CWU for his senior year.

Hey guys, Ben Parker from Cal Rivals swinging by. Jarred told me he is deciding on Saturday (tomorrow). Just not sure of the exact time. I’m feeling Cal or Washington State. The Cougars have a good shot for all the reasons you guys have said.
