Kingsbury hired as OC at USC

If I could choose, I'd prefer not to have another program running the Air Raid in our conference for recruiting and prep reasons. Not likely to make a huge difference on the recruiting front since it's USC, I suppose. Could pay some indirect benefits by giving further credibility to the offense, having some talented players in that "system" get drafted and succeed in the NFL, etc.

Haha, that’s great. We don’t play them for the next 2 years.... we need them strong!

My thinking exactly. If a blue blood does throw the house at Leach we could easily steal him and plug him in while maintaining all the things that work.

Kingbury at USC actually helps us a lot because it gets more and more recruits to think Air Raid and then why go for the student when they can play for the master at WSU.

Also Helton will be gone if they struggle so no matter what it’s a win for what we do.

The more teams go to Air Raid, the more secure Jimmy’s job is! Which is good for him because no program with a pulse is going to give him a look at HC.

Lake is such a genius savient against the air raid it is amazing someone in the B12 has not broken the bank to get him in B12.

Probably do not want his idiot mouth representing their school.

Know people from Kliff's home town and they say Kliff would take a bullet for Leach. I guarantee you he has read Lake's comments and if he and JT Daniels get the upper hand next year in their game in Seattle it would get very ugly for the pretenders.

These are pretty good points. Having failed as a HC at Tech, though, I don't know why he'd do better in Pullman.

It may be a one year gig if they struggle.

If I was USC I would be a little more diverse. Run more of what Norm Chow ran back in the day.

You can mark this post with those USC weapons and Kliff their offense will not "struggle". Don't know about the overall team.

Everyone in the B12 is glad Kliff is hasta lavista.

USC's OL and RBs aren't what they used to be.

The jabs have gone both ways. I wish Lake would shut up but the war of words didn’t just start this year. At $1.1 million per year, he can probably afford to wait for a good head coaching gig.

I’m happy to have USC go to the Air Raid. It seems well calculated to negate their historic culture and advantages.

He was way too green to be a HC at Texas Tech, but after a few years in the Pac + our structure it wouldn’t be that hard for him.

When he walked into Texas Tech he didn’t know what he was doing and that really sort of set him back. I’ll be he doesn’t make the same mistakes twice.

I agree. They have all sorts of advantages. Why not beat up on people?

Haha, well-said. Hate to say it but this potentially is a dream of sorts for UW. Pretty clearly leaves it as the big dog in the conference running a pro-style offense. USC and UCLA are both spread teams now. I know Mario wants to run a power offense, but I don't view Oregon as a big dog.

And on the defensive side, while I'd love to see USC shove it down Lake's throat and it will be interesting to watch, this undoubtedly is what Lake/UW/Kwiatowski would choose if they could pick an offense USC would run.

Also good points.

I posted a few days ago that a scenario could arise where USC hires KK, he turns the offense around (not unlikely with their QB and skill position talent), but the defense struggles and they fire Helton. That might put Leach on their short list.

Define " running a pro-style offense" and what offense looks most like what the top teams in the NFL ( Chiefs, Rams and Patriots) are now running.

When Lake shuts down an Air Raid offense with NFL caliber players in it like an OU and possibly now USC ( if Kliff goes there) then he can talk all he wants and even people like me will listen.

Lake is a rocket surgeon!

Hmmm...not seeing Leach at USC.

Fair point. I'm just referring to what their recruiting talking points will be, not what a "pro-style offense" really is in today's day and age.

Or just Kingsbury himself.

Yes, SC has some good athletes on the roster. But none of them were recruited for the Air Raid. I suspect that it will take 2-3 years to fully implement the Air Raid (for a variety of reasons, including cultural, recruiting and educational), and Helton may not have that long.

If Kingsbury goes to SC, what I expect to see in the first year is one of the Air Raid hybrids that incorporates a TE...perhaps with the TE occasionally splitting out into more of a slot position. I'd also expect him to keep a power game for short yardage/goal line that uses a FB. SC has not had a good QB coach in a while, and Kingsbury could probably help out there quite a bit.

Itll take 5 mins to implement the air raid at SC. They have receivers, backs and qbs that have all at one time in their career had wild success. There is no shortage of ball players there, only coaching.

Biggs, you might be right. But I'd give Kingsbury a full year to implement a change that radical, even if as you suggest they have all the players they need right now. There will be TE's and FB's wanting to transfer out if it looks like the Air Raid is there to stay, and it will be interesting to see if Helton will permit them to transfer within the PAC. I'd put a cold beer bet on the idea that his first year's SC offense would look more like what Sonny Dykes was trying to do at Cal than what CML does....but I could be wrong. It will be interesting to see!

They will use the TEs. The FBs are out of luck. It isnt radical. Its pitch and catch.

We do not want an Air Raid system at SC. They will be Oklahoma West. If not better.

Really don't see a negative impact to WSU. They are not in the same Division and really do not recruit the same players. If anything if players see success at USC they will be more likely want play in that type system somewhere and WSU would be a good choice of they do not go to USC. Air Raid type offenses is where football is going, people might as well accept it. Even Alabama opened things up more this year than ever before. Once those type systems fully take over the NFL, getting kids to play in old "pro style"offense will almost be like asking them to play in a wishbone.

They will be better and have a defense to match. SC running the air raid wins more games and titles than PC did. Unless they keep Helton lol

Reading the SC boards, seems to be pretty positive feedback from fans and boosters despite the headscratching choice of offense for a school with talent advantages like them. I suppose years of comparative mediocrity will make even the big programs desperate
