While not confirmed his announcement about declaring for the draft seems to indicate he'll be focusing on that and will sit out the bowl game.
Hopefully Macintosh steps up and has a monster game!
Apologies if this has already been covered.

Disappointing if true.

I’m disappointed to say the least. One more nail in the coffin containing my interest in BCS football.

I swear that one day soon I’m going to stop following the thing. I’ve been saying as much since before Leach came on board. Perhaps the Cougs’ hiring of Dickert can provide me the offset required to still give a shit.

I hate this crap. If that were my son, I'd tell him it's a disrespectful decision. No hard feelings, but effectively immediately, Max is out of the program. That's the way we have to look at this.

Like the other thread, this is just speculation though, right?

I don't know if declaring means you're ineligible or not - I thought only after you hired representation that your eligibility ended.

You still offer to let him stick around, use the facilities and host his pro day on campus. That's just good PR for the program.

Declaring that he will go into the NFL draft does not make him ineligible for the Sun Bowl. This may turn out to be true but at the moment it is just speculation.

No hard feelings??? Ya sure?

He's "beginning training immediately" which makes it sound like he's gone.

As long as has graduated or is next week, he's accomplished what he came to WSU for. This does sting a bit considering all the BS this team went through this season.

You are probably right but he could "be in training" and still play. Unfortunately I suspect he won't. Has he been invited to any of the post season games? It seems to me he needs to be seen to improve his draft status.

Nah. Heat of the moment disappointment on my part, but what can you do? I think it sucks, but it doesn't undo what he's meant here. He's just no longer a part of the program as of today.

I look at this the same way as a kid quitting in the middle of the season...because this is the middle of the season. It's not over yet. I'd tell my own boys the same thing.

He graduated and is done with Wazzu. Good for him for finishing in 3 1/2 years. You'd think he would want the record. I don't know what training he's going to be doing in the next 2 weeks. Maybe he's just banged up and doesn't want to take anymore hits until he's collecting a check for it.

I wish he was playing, both for his teammates and my own selfish reasons as a fan, but this is common. The benefit of burning bridges with a (potentially) NFL-bound player who has busted his ass and performed well for the program for years, as compared to the cost and risk, is tiny. This is one of those things where as a coach, you want them to play, but if they don't, you respect it and express support. Better to be the guy who really supports his players' efforts to get to the NFL than the guy burning bridges with players over sitting out a lower tier bowl game to prep for trying to reach that lifelong goal. Hopefully we have a lot of players who are legitimate pro prospects in future seasons.

Bitter sweet. Sweet that he is protecting himself, but bitter that his commitment to the team ends with personal interests. Self interest works for a while, then sometimes backfires at a later level.

Unwittingly it reinforces the durability question.

Arby's stock down 1% today, they'll continue to rely upon Hope Solo's endorsement.

Kind of dumb if you ask me. Take a couple snaps and then watch the rest of the game from the sidelines.

Enjoy all the bowl swag, have a few beers with the bros, maybe take in a donkey show, whatever. Two weeks of 'training' isn't going to vault Max Borghi into a high draft pick. The NFL has, what, 4 years of game tape on him?

Yeah that's my thoughts.

Why not just ask for a lighter workload and get some of the other kids some reps as opposed to just not playing

It also begs the question of "what bowl is big enough for Mr Big Britches to not abandon his teammates?" NC or bust?

I'm glad the athletes are getting paid in the NFL, as even rookie money is life changing if managed properly, so just getting a contract and hanging around for 3 years is worth close to $3MM.

Again, just another thing sucking the college game dry of any integrity.

Taylor Rapp sat out the UW's Rose Bowl loss vs tOSU with an "injury" announced just before game.

The combine is the End of Feb, and I don't know he'll be invited, and the draft the end of April. So I am not sure how much the two week head start really does for him. I am happy Broghi elected to go to WSU, and thank him for his 4 years with the team. I'd just like to see him in a Coug uniform one more time. If he elects not to play in the bowl, it's his choice, unfortunately times have changed. It's another reason to expand the playoffs, not that WSU would have been in a playoff, but the appeal of the bowls is not what it once was. The fans have already started disappearing from the bowls, if the players disappear, so will the bowls.

bowls won't go away until people stop tuning in.

the TV ratings are dropping as well, which will mean less money on the next contract, Erosion: the gradual destruction or diminution of something.

Really? Not invited to the combine???? I find that hard to believe.

Interesting that some here assume he would skip the bowl to prepare for the combine.
I've always suspected the real heart of the matter in these situations is to avoid potential injury.

yes, it's the Willis Mcgehee doctrine.

Ironically, McGehee went on to have a successful NFL career.

After reading his message, I think he's finishing up his finals and heading to a training facility in a warm-weather state. He'll tweet a "good luck" message on the day of, but he's not going to be in El Paso.

Honestly, this looks like another example of a player following bad advice. I don't think he gets drafted high enough for guaranteed money. He's not an every down back in the NFL. He's also not an up-the-middle back. He's got good acceleration, but not great change of direction or cutback...especially when he's trying to turn the corner. He takes on individual tacklers pretty well, but doesn't move the pile. He's too hesitant at the LOS (which we saw a lot this year) and if he can't find a hole he gets tied up in stutter steps and doesn't go anywhere.

And, there are a lot of running backs coming out this year that have a lot more track record as good runners.

But...he catches the ball and moves well in space. That could be an asset on some teams. He's a decent pass blocker, but I'm not sure how well he'll do picking up NFL blitzers.

If I'm most GMs in the league, he's not even an afterthought until the 5th round, and then only if my needs are satisfied. At that point, I'd consider him as a possible 3rd down back and special teamer. If I'm GM in Tampa, Atlanta, or Miami, I'll watch him at the combine and decide how I feel about him compared to Fournette, Patterson, and Gaskin.

I'd like to think he gets invited, they usually take about 330 players, he should fit into that number, but who knows.

Really??? The NFL combine is gonna pass on inviting an all conference back from a P5 conference??? For what reason? He didn’t score enough touchdowns? Catch enough passes? Amazing.

This is what you believe???

Borghi's idol is Christian McCaffrey. He also skipped the Sun Bowl his senior year.

Glad Cougar
You're right...
"On December 19, McCaffrey announced he would not participate in the team's Sun Bowl game against North Carolina, opting to skip the game to prepare for the NFL Draft. His decision was met with mixed reactions; supporters agreed it was a smart decision, while those opposing considered the move selfish, and potentially detrimental to college football should other players follow suit".
