Times evolve. People evolve. Institutions evolve. While change can be uncomfortable, no change at all is probably worse. And that applies to almost every aspect of life.

I'm not generally pc but I understand some of the reasoning for this.

I don't follow politics too closely myself, but I saw on the news where Pres. Trump felt the NFL team's nickname change was a frivolous measure.

I usually don't post political stuff, but given that Rypien is one of my fave Cougs and also played for the 'skins, I thought I'd share his recent opinion for those that haven't seen it. I remember a few years ago he wasn't for changing the name but he's now for the change.

I didn't care when they kept the name and I'm not worked up that they are changing the name. The thing that I find hilarious are the people that claim that "history is being changed" when a mascot name is changed. The angst and stress that those people have about a picture on the side of a helmet and painted on a football field is laughable to me. If Wazzu decided that we couldn't be Cougars because it was offensive to older women that like dating young dudes......I'd be annoyed as a fan...but I'd be over it as long as we picked a good replacement. There are much more pressing things in life than mascots.

This should have happened like 50 years ago. 'Redskins' is basically a racial slur, and it always has been. I'm more blase' about stuff like 'Chiefs' or 'Indians' (I think the issue with these teams is often more about the logos but I can't speak for anybody on this) but that particular name is terrible, and their ownership had a long and unpleasant tradition of being exactly what you would expect from a team carrying that name.

Taking 'Gone With the Wind' off of Netflix is frivolous. Pretty sure I saw some dumb headline about some company taking the word 'Chief' out of the applicable executive titles. That's frivolous, and frequently done because it's easy to "call out" and easy to "fix." This one is a bit different because it's a prominent cultural organization that named itself after a literal slur. Just like the statues of prominent Confederates in front of courthouses signifies where the sympathies of the State lie.

Dixie Chicks changed their name to just Chicks.
They lost the remaining 10 fans they had.
Sometimes people do things because they truly feel as though it's the right thing to do and sometimes they do it for publicity...

Agreed, 79, though sometimes I think they can't really tell the difference between the two.
