Mateer Fall Camp ~ 7/31

Cam Ward was exciting to watch, and actually his stat line from last year looks pretty good

Only 7 Ints, and 8 rushing TDs.

What the stat sheet doesn't show is 7 fumbles, the guy was careless with the ball while running around, thanks to our OL. He cost us the Cal game with his turnovers. He simply needed to wrap it up. Also, those stats were padded by his great first 4 games, and a lot of yards against Cal. He was terrible in the Stanford game.

I liked Ward, he brought attention to the program, and if he was still at WSU, we would be a better team this year. I doubt that he makes it in the NFL, and I doubt he is the savior for Miami, maybe a good offensive line will help his confidence, I wish him well but, he is going to have his third OC in 3 years. He brought excitement to the program, and if he played a great game, we could compete with most anyone, hell if the refs would have called holding on the UW, we could have won that game. If he didn't play well, we weren't a good team, which is more a reflection on the rest of the teams play. Had our defense showed up at Cal we should have won that game in spite of the fumbles.

Part of being a good qb is being a good qb consistently.

End of story.

Perhaps. Just throwing out there that Oviatt held that position during a pretty historically successful stretch for the program. Maybe he packed it in with everyone else when Doba was taking care of his wife? Don’t know for sure, but worth noting. It’s not like Oviatt came in and things went to shit right away. Couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Just confirmed in the 2007 media guide. Oviatt was "Director of Physical Development" for all WSU sports from 2000-2004. Promoted to "Assistant Athletic Director for Physical Development in 2004, and was there through the 2007 season. He's actually in the 2008 media guide, but he resigned in July so wasn't actually here for the season. Looks like he took a few seasons off before going to work for Robin Pflugrad at Montana 2010-2014.

I'm not sure what the full job description looked like for him, but 2004 was roughly when strength & conditioning went into the toilet. Everyone knows we were solid in 2003, but by 2005 we couldn't even play a full game.

Let's not forget how many Ward fumbles happened and by the miracles of the Cougar Gods had the ball end up with us vs. the other team(s)

He was head of S&C in 2000. I’m
Not sure anything changed with his promo, may have just been a title and pay bump for performance? I’m not going to argue about it further other than to say I was intimately familiar with the program at that time and knew personally what his role was. Maybe S&C went downhill for some reason later but he sure as hell deserves credit for some Coug teams that turned in great seasons and we all know that doesn’t happen with Coug football if you are ravaged with injuries 😂

He was an older dude so maybe he wore out a bit as time went on 🤷

Fumbles are almost worse than picks for a QB. Some picks are on bombs and work out like punts. A lot of fumbles happen in the backfield and can result in not only a turnover but -10-20 yards from scrimmage if not a fumble 6. Wards fumbles were absolute killers.

“He is a high level NFL guy.”
