Mississippi St. looks great

I wish I could say this is surprising. Leach is a damn good coach. To think, some folks thought he was taking the MSU as a retirement gig.

He’s a great coach. His system will be figured out by the SEC coaches, but his teams are tough and always ready and excited to play.

Once again...

There are 2 types of coaches - those that gameplan the opponent and those that think "we do what we do and it works".

Wilcox and Lake gameplanned Leach. Others didnt. Take that for what its worth. Itll be interesting to see what Saban does.

If LSU is indicative of SEC secondaries, there will be a lot of yards and points every week.

However, I give this one to the MSU defense. They shut down LSU early, while MSU was still getting their legs under them.

Leach actually has a more manageable talent gap at Miss St compared to the rest of the SEC than he did at WSU and the rest of the PAC 12.

Hes got some very good players on his roster and his recruiting class coming in is even better.

Leach shocked the world, as nobody, and I mean nobody predicted an upset. What a great start, on his MSU debut career, giving him respect from everyone. Good for him. He deserves it.

Grantid, LSU lost 17 players off it's roster from last year. Leach just picked himself up some good recruits, for sure. What a win!

This is a 7 win LSU team. Still a good win for CML, but I think this is as much about how bad LSU is as is about how good MSU is. Could be wrong but we shall see.

Admitting you’re wrong is a sign of maturity.

I’m not coming to Biggs defense here, but let’s not book MSUs arrival in the SEC just yet. LSU was a mess today. As someone noted, they lost 17 players from last season, half of their coaches, their 3 best players this season were out, including their stud corner who got ruled out yesterday.

I’m really happy for Leach, but these early season games are an absolute crapshoot this season.

LSU and Alabama dont rebuild they reload

LSU would beat everybody in the pac 12 by 20+ points, they are still loaded with NFL players

Come on man. I get your point, but LSU was a wreck today. They would have lost to 3/4 of the SEC and at least half the P12. They were completely unprepared on defense.

Sure, relative to non-SEC teams they are still pretty darn good...and maybe they get better as the season progresses, but this still might be the worst LSU team in the last several years... if for no other reason than turnover at so many positions. They have a brutal schedule too, with road games against Florida, Auburn, and A&M. By the way, 7 win team this year means 7-3 due to the shortened season. 7 wins isn't terrible. Just not LSU-level. All I am saying is lets wait and see how LSU performs going forward before vaulting MSU in to greatness.

I'm just happy to be talking football again.

An LSU down year is similar now to a Alabama down year. This means not a MNC but a top 10 team loaded with 4 and 5 star NFL players. Dont kid yourself.

Miss State has a first round RB in K Hill, a qb who will be taken in the early rounds next year and a pair of 6-4/6-5 recievers who can fly.

Their DC is good and they have a lot of athletes and speed.

Ah yes, I can always count on bigg for witty repartee. So it changed from “The JC coach won’t be able to win in the SEC” to “ LSU, ranked 6in the nation and last years National Champion is really a bottom feeder and anybody could have beat them so Leach’s win doesn’t really expose me as a fraud who relies on 1950’s offensive football cliches as my claim to football expertise.

No need to respond, you probably have a migraine already.

The LSU on the field today was not a top 10 caliber team. Its one game, but they would have to VASTLY improve if they wanted any chance at finishing top 10. I get that on paper they have one of the most talented teams in the country. Sometimes talent doesn't translate to on the field success. Will it this time? Maybe... I don't have a crystal ball. I only know what I saw today. They were a mess today.

LSU's d backs today stunk. That team, playing like they did today, would get killed in the PAC. Since I agree that LSU has athletes, I don't see anyone else to blame but the staff. They must have a really poor D staff...because the pass defense was what you would expect to see from the worst team in the PAC. They had a pretty good pass rush...with 4 guys...and still had one coverage breakdown after another. They made Costello look like an NFL QB...maybe he is, but I watched the whole game, and I doubt it. The pass yards were against a pitiful defense. 44 points??? LSU would have a hard time having a winning record in the PAC if they played the way they played today. For their sake, I hope they are a better team than what we saw.

That is most certainly NOT true. LSU lost everyone from a generational team last season. Their program is not similar to Alabama. Today’s LSU team was atrocious. That shouldn’t take anything away from MSUs win, but at least recognize the likelihood of a completely ill prepared LSU team.

They graduated 17 players, their stud QB, lost half their coaches, had 4 starters from this years team opt out, and learned 10 hours before kickoff that they would be without Derek Stingley today, a kid who’s considered to be the best defensive player in the Nation. They were literally having to replace nearly 70% of their 2-deep roster from last season.

LSU played with 4 DL and found out why Pac 12 teams dropped 8 and rushed 3.

This is on the LSU DC.

Seems like I have been writing for years about how I wanted to see what would happen when teams played 4 DL against the air raid....

yea ok, whatever you say.

Miss State had something to do with making LSU look bad

LSU is a elite program and yes they are similar to Alabama. Go study their roster and their recruiting classes. You dont know what you are talking about.

Sour Grapes

I mean MSU is learning a new offense, first game with a new coach. On the road. LSU's squad was practicing against a generational team last year. Running the same system. This was a game LSU should have won easy.

I only saw parts of the game, but the parts I saw the MSU offense looked great. It was a reminder what the Air Raid can do with a QB that is looking to pass deep, and has the time to do it. I didn't see all of the endless dump-offs two yards behind the line of scrimmage. If Costello has time to throw and doesn't take too many hits, he will have a great year against teams that haven't seen this.

Its hard to rate LSU, but they lost 17 starters off of a team that was clearly an outlier. They aren't Alabama or Clemson. Prior to last year they were just as likely to win 8 games as they were to win 10 games. I'm not crying for LSU, but their talent probably wasn't much better than MSU today, and their scheme is worse.

Reality:

LSU HISTORICALLY, was like Alabama, but 2nd fiddle to Alabama the same way Michigan was 2nd fiddle to Ohio State.

They are a BLUE CHIP, BLUE BLOOD ALABAMA LIKE PROGRAM.

they were as good as Alabama, before and during the LES MILES years.

Then in Les Miles later years, LSU TEMPORARILY became much like what Penn State, Michigan is now, a 8,9,10 win team.

Think about that for a moment. In a bad year LSU wins 8,9,10 wins in a season.

Then LSU won a National Championship last year.

LSU is most definetly a Alabama like Blue Blood program. They recruit 5 stars. Their back ups, Bench is comprised of 5 star true freshman, etc.

So why did LSU do so bad today?

1. LSU lost 17 players, a defensive stud, etc, that certainly contributed. But LSU would still probably win 8,9,10 games in a 12 game season, and still goto a New Years Bowl, either 1 of the NY6 or a 2nd tier New Years Bowl, and still be. Top 10 to Top 13 to top 15 to top 17.

They would start slow, lose to a good team, then get better as season went on.

And even if this were to be wrong. Most of the college football world, pundits, experts would perceive, give credit to LSU as being a Alabama like team that was, is reloading.

2. As Biggs said, The DC was a idiot. didnt rush 3,4 drop 7,8 back into pass coverage.

3. Not only did LSU lose a lot from last year, but LOTS of injuries, etc. LSU still has 5 stars on bench. Those 5 star bench players will start producing. LSU would still win 8,9,10 games in a 12 game + Bowls schedule.

4. MSU has some STUD players that Leach inherited.

5. Give credit where credit is Due. Yes Leach inherited players. Yes LSU is TEMPORARILY down, yes the LSU DC was a idiot. But still Leach coming in and putting up 44+ points on and defensively shutting down LSU is extremely good.

Any other coach in Mike Leach's situation at MSU would have either lost, or just barely won by skin of teeth, vs LSU.

Also the most important thing that is going to be seen in, from this game:

The College Football World, Pundits, Experts, 4,5 STAR RECRUITS, etc, are going to think, say: MIKE LEACH, MSU JUST DESTROYED A NATIONAL CHAMPION, A ALABAMA, OHIO STATE LIKE TEAM.

If MSU were to win 8,9,10,11 games in a 12 game + Bowl season, or 7,8,9 games in a shortened season, COMBINED with DESTROYING a NATIONAL CHAMPION:

Then 5 star recruits would FLOCK to MSU, and Leach would build a 9,10,11 win per season POWER HOUSE program.

In a way it doesnt matter what reality is, or what we perceive, or think.

The reality is WHAT THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL WORLD, and 5 STAR RECRUITS will think, and how that will enable Leach to build a POWERHOUSE program at MSU.

Like another poster said, not giving Leach, MSU credit, and blaming the LSU loss on JUST, ONLY the idiot LSU DC, an or LSU losing 17 players, just STINKS of SOUR GRAPES, HOMERISM.

Give Credit where it is due.

And the reality is Leach deserves credit.

If you don't give Mike Leach enough credit, he will bite you in the arse. I'm interest to see what happens down the line, because the SEC DCs are now officially on notice. If their defenses are a good and talented as the pundits claim they are, they will watch some UW and Cal film, and the "air raid" will come to a halt. Somehow, I don't think it will be quite that easy, because the SEC got exposed yesterday as being a tad overrated.

I think if Leach is ever going to make it over the hump, it will be this year or next. First, it takes time for teams in a conference to adapt to the "air raid." Second, he has inherited a #27, a #25, a #23 and a #26 recruiting classes. according to this site, so he has way more talent than he ever has had before. Conversely, his personality makes it doubtful that he will improve Mississippi State's recruiting. So now is probably his best shot.

Without looking, would you bet that LSU has more four stars sitting on the bench than MSU has on its roster?

Of course I would, but I’ve learned with Leach that if the opposing teams QB sucks and their secondary is a mess, you’re in trouble. That’s exactly what happened yesterday to LSU.

I don’t agree with that, but I also don’t want to diminish Leach’s accomplishment yesterday either. I love ML and I didn’t want him to leave.

As I mentioned in another thread, Leach had the better QB yesterday (by miles), and LSUs back 7 was gutted. It’s not just the 17 starters they lost from last season, but the 4 (NFL) kids who opted out this year, plus the loss of Stingley. You’re in for a long day against Leach when your secondary is in chaos and your QB isn’t good.

Laughable and stupid . This MSU team would roll those Cal and UW teams by 3 TD's .

Many “experts” had LSU -14 as the lock of the week.

What “experts” are you referencing??

The Spread opened at -17 and fell to -14. That’s the “experts” in action & the opposite of what you just said.......unless you don’t understand how point spreads move?

He’s a great coach. His system will be figured out by the SEC coaches, but his teams are tough and always ready and excited to play.
We’ll always exciting totally agree ... but not sure I can totally do so on the ready to play aspect
