New coaches

Now that the staff has been filled, it seems as though Dickert isn't pegged as the long term guy by WSU. Which might be for the best.

Has anyone on staff been pounding the pavement in recruiting over the last 3 months? If they all think they are out at the end of the year regardless, it explains a lot.
What are you talking about? If WSU qualifies for a bowl game, Dickert is an absolute lock to become the full time coach.

You have some strange interpretations of what’s going on right now. We needed to fill a few coaching spots, and we opted for these guys because of their familiarity with the RnS, the players, and their families. That’s it. You don’t need to read any further into it.

I am happy they are here, who knows if they will be here full time, they were probably retired, and enjoying life fishing or golfing. What they are is Run and Shoot guys, there was a Run and Shoot team that was in desperate need of help and they were willing to step up and help. I am sure they didn't have to come, sure they had other plans they had to cancel, but their loyalty to an offense that they helped develop over the years brought them here. So thanks Dennis and Dan, there are many of us that appreciate the help.

Let's play this out. Let's say we beat BYU tomorrow, which makes sense given the emotion the team will be playing with for their fired coaches, we go on the road against ASU and lose. Then we drop a game against Oregon after they bye. We beat Arizona because they are terrible. Then we lose the Apple Cup. After that run, you think Dickert is a lock to be retained?

I see the program in limbo until the end of the season. Then the actual plan will unfold. A serious question is how in the world does this staff recruit right now? The majority of this staff is gone at the end of the season, regardless of outcome. Banker is probably back, same for Cooper. Special teams coach probably sticks around too. But do they keep Brian Smith and the RNS? I would think not as there isn't a bunch of talented young coaches who are looking to get schooled in the offense.

So if I'm a HS recruit, I don't know what offense we'll be running next year so I hold off. I don't know what defense we'll be running next year, so I'll hold off. I'd venture a guess recruiting will remain slow until we get some clarity in the long term coaching situation. We won't have that for several months.

If he finishes 2-3 and gets a bowl, under the circumstances I wouldn't complain if Chun gave him the reins. It might be below market and short term, but I think salvaging a bowl this year, especially with a tough remaining schedule, earns him a real shot. Give him a deal for 3 years, $2M per. $250K for each win from 6 and up. $50K additional for winning Apple cup. Plus the same incentives Roll had for bowl qualification/wins. $100K for having a recruiting class ranked top 2 in conference $500k if it's top 25. Same metrics for APR ranking, and $10k for every point above the conference average APR. Automatic extension year at 7 wins, automatic $250k raise (next season) at 8 wins, another at 10.

That gives Chun a reasonable price tag, and accountability for the coach. Also gives Dickert the chance at competitive compensation if he's successful.

The deck stacked against Dickert to get the job, but our options were going to be very limited on what coaches we could get at this time of year, especially running the Run and Shoot. I highly doubt he's getting the job unless a miracle happens and we win the North or something.

I would love to keep Dickert and Cooper on staff though. You can see the coaching and development on the field. The DE's have been phenomenal this year and Thorton was a stud Saturday with Jahad out.
If it's not Dickert as HC, I hope he gets a fair shake as a DC with whoever gets the job. He and DeBoer would be interesting.

Logic escapes you once again.

There's a reason they've never held a P5 position before. It's highly unlikely that all 5 will be the super magic secret sauce we've been missing for the past 100 years.
Dickert is what, 38? It's not there's many late-30 year olds getting P5 jobs.
