Oliver luck hired

He was hired as a consultant last week. No new news beyond that as far I can tell.

Whether this is hire the consultant as the next commissioner, we shall see. There would have to be a conference in order for there to be a commissioner.

I’ve seen other articles that say the remaining 4 are basically bypassing Kliavkoff now, in favor of Luck. That he’s effectively no longer commissioner, they just haven’t formalized it.

I wonder what his golden parachute is.

The bylaws specifically state that individuals can’t receive disbursements, so best case his contract gets paid. He can’t get a dissolution package.
Yeah but what is his contract? I guess it doesn't really matter. We need to jettison that guy while we still have 12 teams to pay the freight.

I had read recently that he has 3 years remaining in his contract and his annual salary was something like $3.5 million per year.
This explains why he's been so silent even after the Pac-12 Media Days Conference. Since then, no public presser or interviews. He clearly was a wrong hire. Another lessons learned.

I hope this is not true but if it is, how do you possibly hire a guy with no relevant experience into that role at that salary? F-ing idiot Presidents. Starting with Schulz. If the Board of Regents weren't just a puppet show, heads would be rolling.

I'm never giving another dime to WSU.

Not donating will make WSU great! Please teach them a lesson.

Talked with an OSU Regent who was holding court with 5-6 other Beaver fans after the Mariners game today.

He claims PAC-12 contract states you bolt, you forfeit your rights to a share of cash and properties immediately.

He claims there will be $400-425 Million left in the bank at the end of next year and the conference intends to keep that money and use it to recruit other teams to form a new look PAC (??)

“Hardball” was the word he kept using.

He also claims the conference owns all historical rights to all footage and other properties(?) and intends to “vigorously defend” their copyrights should any school try and use historical footage in their marketing.

Who knows? Guy seemed legit as did the other OSU boosters standing around him in he Diamond Club.

FWIW

He also claimed, no way, no how does the PAC-4 merge or fall into the MWC. Says there are 3-4 MWC teams we’re courting along with a couple others.

Again, idle rumors. But who knows? Oliver Luck doesn’t seem like the surrendering type. I guess we’ll see.

The PAC-? Presidents are unlikely to withhold severance from GK for his lack of performance. It would be a dangerous precedent that might later be used against them. And these inept, self-promoting bumblers are concerned about their own self-interest, first and foremost.

This is great news! Too bad we didn't have Luck from the get go.
I don't know how Luck was a candidate to replace Larry and doesn't get hired. I'd really love to know who was pushing for GK over Luck. I'd love to see a lawsuit reach the discovery phase just to see the inner workings of the Pac's decision making process. There was clearly incompetence at best and disingenuous intent at worst

I don't know how Luck would have done any better with the Presidents telling him what to do. That ESPN offer/counter offer was a joke that they pushed George to follow up on.

That being said my understanding of George, who lives in Las Vegas, was that he was involved with the Entertainment aspect of the MGM Properties. No disrespect to the him there because the MGM properties are vast and large. George was also involved with the Las Vegas Aces WNBA team. How that makes him the best qualified candidate to lead the Pac12 is beyond me.

To be fair, he actually managed to negotiate better deals than the Big12 got, but we didn’t take it. Schools pushed to 50 mil instead of 32-35. Also the apple deal at 25 + incentives wasn’t terrible. 2.7 million subscribers and it would have been more than Big12 numbers. Pac-12 had 14.4 mil subs on Tv, so I assume they could have gotten 1/5th of that at some point in the first couple years. I’m not saying he did a fantastic job, but he certainly at least delivered options we could have taken and remained relevant with.

That squares with the report that came out last week, and the PDF of the conference bylaws someone linked. And with the reported GOR conditions in the ACC contract.

Reading this makes me want to jump off a bridge

What it's all been about is USC wanting a greater share than other schools, as mentioned in there. Other than offseason boredom, I'm not sure why the USC guys are spending time pissing on the conference's grave.

USC agreed to the even shares before the current deal. USC football has largely underperformed on the field since Carroll left. All of the advantages USC already has weren't enough I guess. And edit to add- Guess what- the B1G does even shares! How long will it take for USC to demand more than Purdue or Maryland, all while the football program is nowhere near sniffing the natty?

I'm not sure why the presidents not accepting deals proposed is the commissioner's fault.

Where do I find one of these jobs that I can suck at and still get paid? Seems like there’s a lot of these jobs out there, I’ve never found one though.

Yeah dude...sign me up.

There needs to be a course taught at WSU like How to Win friends and suck at your job or something.

I like the sounds of that! Not allowing any of the departing schools to EVER use anything from the PAC in promoting their schools. Most appropriate smackdown for them! No highlights on stadium big screens, nothing used in recruiting promotional material, nothing in development activities (meaning money raising), no use of any historical material at all! Excellent!

I was watching some of the women's run through the PAC 12 bball tourney last night, and cynically laughing about all the promos from coaches and administrators about how important and wonderful it was to be able to compete in the PAC 12 Conference. Not like it is ironic at this point, huh?

I'm not sure why the presidents not accepting deals proposed is the commissioner's fault.

It's his fault, because he didn't do something like this.

First in private, first preface what your about to say, with:

" You hired me because of my experience with MGM, with pro sports teams, with marketing, negotiations, closing deals, and knowing, accepting fair value, and not asking for too much or too little."

"Kirk Herbstreit, and Brock Huard, talked to the PAC 12's head coaches, Larry Scott, etc. Some of them are gone, some of them are still here.".

"I have brought those coaches here." The coaches walk in.

"Didn't Kirk, Brock, tell you all that the PAC 12 was arrogant, not treating media contract partners fairly, saying the PAC 12 was WAY BEHIND, and that the PAC 12 had a WAY OVER INFLATED VIEW OF ITS WORTH?"

"I did some research, here is the results of my research". Has CREDIBLE results of research passed out to Presidents.

"As the results in your hands show, the 30 million offer that I got is, was a since, genuine, fair offer".

"As the EXPERT here, a PROPER counter offer is about 34 million to 36 Million, which they will TURN DOWN, and we will settle on about 33 million.".
.
"THEY WILL NOT ACCEPT A 50 MILLION COUNTER OFFER. AND IF WE COUNTER LIKE THAT, THEY WILL TERMINATE NEGOTATIONS, AND WE WILL NOT GET A BETTER DEAL, AND WE WILL NOT GET CLOSE TO 50 MILLION."

"I am the EXPERT. You as the Academic, Administrators DO NOT HAVE THE EXPERTISE, KNOW WHAT I KNOW."

"So THEREFORE I AS THE EXPERT SAY WE ARE NOT GOING TO COUNTER OFFER 50 MILLION, AND ARE GOING TO EITHER ACCEPT THE 30 MILLION OFFER, OR COUNTER OFFER 35 MIL, THEN ACCEPT THEIR 32.5 MIL COUNTER."

"IF WE DONT DO THAT, THEN WE EITHER GET NO DEAL, OR A LESSER DEAL, LIKE 20 MIL, THAT WILL CAUSE COLLEGES TO LEAVE PAC 12, AND FOR PAC 12 TO DIE, AND FOR ME TO BE OUT OF MY JOB".

"THEREFORE BECAUSE OF THAT, WE ARE DOING IT MY WAY, NOT YOUR WAY, BECAUSE IM THE EXPERT, NOT YOU."

"AND IF YOU EITHER DONT DO IT MY WAY, AN OR FIRE ME, I WILL EITHER RESIGN, if you don't fire me, AND WHETHER I RESIGN, QUIT, GET FIRED, ETC, I WILL DO SCORCHED EARTH, CRUCIFY YOU ALL IN PUBLIC, ETC."

"WE ARE DOING IT MY EFFIN WAY OR ELSE".

"Now that you have been informed, we are doing it my way. No vote is needed. This meeting is at an end".

That's the way that the greatest commissioners did things for the BIG 10, SEC, for years.

The Commish is SUPPOSED TO BE THE EXPERT, CEO, and the Academic Administrative Presidents, Chancellors, are supposed to be the CORPORATE BOARD.

In a corporation, yes the CORPORATE BOARD, has the ultimate final say. But they usually don't exercise that final say, unless the CEO FCKS EVERYTHING UP, EXTREMELY BAD, as USUALLY THE CEO, HAS THE ULTIMATE FINAL SAY, not the corporate board.

The Commissioner is NOT supposed to be a FCKIN YES MAN.

The Commissioner is supposed to be the FCKIN EXPERT, THE FCKIN LEADER, THE FCKIN ONE WHO DICTATES, TELLS THE ACADEMIC PRESIDENTS, CHANCELORS, WHO DONT FCKIN KNOW SHIT, WHAT TO DO, THEN DOES IT.

And if they don't do it the Commish's way, then he should threaten to resign, GO SCORCHED EARTH, AND FORCE THEM, LEVERAGE THEM TO DO IT HIS WAY, NOT THEIR WAY.

That's what Commish's are supposed to do, and what the great Big 10, SEC Commish's have done.

Guarantee that Big 10, SEC Presidents are not doing it their way, over, instead of the Commish's way.

George was a bad YES MAN Commish.

He is absolutely to blame, along with the presidents, etc.

There it is short and sweet.
Now let’s all get a beer and grab some shade.

This is all we really want to know, right now.

Right now, I’d force the guy running all programming for all the Pac12 networks to show only Football in 60 of the remaining PAC4 teams beating the crap out of all the teams that bolted from now until they’re gone. Same for basketball, baseball etc etc
Hell no. Keep them in the rotation, let their fans keep watching and subscribing. And then keep the media money since they pulled out. Right now they’re pure revenue and no expense.

A tribute to the 2008 Washington Huskies would be a nice touch. “Season of Destiny”. I’d binge watch that shit…twice.
