Pac-12 Suing MW

Really, no matter how this ends up playing out, I don’t like it. We’re doing pretty much the same thing to the MWC as was done to us. We’ve got more of a survival motivation, rather than the outright greed that USC, UCLA, UW, and UO had, but the money is a factor too. But, we went to the MWC for a life boat…and then we talked their strongest rowers into a mutiny and tossed the rest in the water.

I know, it’s the way CFB is now. Doesn’t mean I have to like it.

I don't feel sorry for the MWC at all. They knew they had us over a barrel before this season because we needed games in a hurry. So, they overcharged us. They tried to do the same thing in the other sports, but we had more time to make other arrangements. They even tried to gouge us even more by doubling the amount they were charging for the 2025 schedule, and we said no.

Did you notice that all of our tough and money making conference games are on the road? It is not a coincidence.

Instead of trying to work with the Pac 12 for some sort of partnership, the MWC leadership tried to use us as an ATM. They were just as greedy as the huskies, Ducks, etc. The MWC overplayed their hand. I repeat, I don't feel sorry for them at all.

No, not really the same. UW left a fully functioning conference for more money. WSU and OSU have recruited new members to rebuild a conference decimated by defections.

The only hypocrisy that could even be considered here is if CSU, SDSU, FSU, USU and BSU all had came out publicly denouncing you douchbags as duplicitous, traitorous scum-suckers...and then proceeded to leave their conference for more money. That's all I have to say about that.
I never said same and totally agree it's not. What the cuogs are doing is worse.

Yeah the reported $30M affiliation renewal fee does seem more than a bit ridiculous. I swear when I had my hands on the actual agreement that the renewal fee was spelled out as around $10M. Maybe I misread, or it was only effective if both parties signed the renewal as stated.

IMHO, both sides have overplayed their hands. Now both sides are f-ed. They should have been listening to the wisdom of the All-knowing, All-seeing, Nostradamus of everything CFB. Who is that? Of course, it is the Mighty Loyal One. :)

What I don't get is that all the Scheduling Agreement needed was a signature from the Pac-12 for the 2nd year. I won't get into the original terms we all know what they are and both parties originally approved it. My understanding was that instead of signing for the 2nd year which would have been $12 million, (less than the first year's $14 million because the Administrative fee of $2 million covered both years), was the Pac-2 wanted to renegotiate. Something happened in those negotiations that created friction. There was even a quote from Theresa Gould that she and Gloria were playing phone tag or something to that effect. I remember when I heard that I was thinking what a dumb thing to say as professional conference leaders. I mean if you don't know how to schedule conference calls or meetings then you are ****ed up. At that time I felt that something was up between those two. I thought they don't like each other. Where that $30 million dollar figure came from I don't know. Everything was going well even when the MWC accepted the affiliate membership of your baseball and swim teams. That was in April. No dollars were discussed over that that I know of. Why did things just turn and get nasty in the next 4 months.

One year deal with an option to extend,

Coug1990, I've had similar thoughts.

When my OSU Beavers go on the road to play football at places like Michigan, Ohio State, and LSU, we get PAID $1M to $1.5M by the home team. (Never heard of getting $2M for one of those games...)

When the Beavers host Idaho State, Portland State, Sacramento State, etc, for a football game, we pay them around $300K to $500K for their visit.

The PAC-12 is paying the Mountain West $14M for 12 games this season, 6 home and 6 away. Neither the Beavers or the Cougars are getting paid for visiting their stadiums (for the 6 road games that are part of the 2024 scheduling agreement).

For the Cougars' $7M, the Cougars get home games with Hawaii, Utah State, and Wyoming. Oh, baby, what a schedule.

For the Beaver' $7M, the Beavers get home games with UNLV, Colorado State, and San Jose State. Arguably a better group of teams than the Cougars', but not worth $7M.

For $14M, the PAC-12 did not get a visit from the MWC's best brands, Boise State, Fresno State, or SDSU.

MWC commissioner Gloria Nevarez did not try to partner with the PAC-12 on this scheduling agreement. Rather, she knew we didn't have a realistic second option, so she took full advantage of us.

No Gibby, that wasn't the point. Yes the Year 2 option was in the agreement (the copy I have keeps blurring out on me so I can't get to that part). Meister thinks it was another $12M. The linked CBS article says it was $14M. I swear when I had the F-ing agreement in my paws it was $10M. So the question (and point) is how did that mutate into the reported $30M? And why? Only Gloria knows. I may have to traipse down to Colorado Springs (have I ever mentioned I was born there?) and ask her over a few drinks.

To Meister - I don't know if the Pac (Teresa) balked or the MW (Gloria) balked. Maybe we did and Gloria said F-you it's $30M. Let's keep in mind that these are two probably menopausal women cat fighting. Speaking of cats, I researched and can't find evidence that either of them has kids. So they may very well be menopausal childless cat ladies fighting over our conference futures. I suggest a cage match, or perhaps a jello wrestling faceoff.

Yeah, so what? Gloria is a shrewd business woman, looking out for her conference. Quackkoff was over his head, as is Teresa. Speaking of which, Teresa cares about herself keeping a job - which is why we are in such a F-ed position right now. That said, I agree the terms suck(ed). Don't forget no TV money for the away games, no chance to compete for the conference title, etc. Another example of why Teresa needs to be fired, we need to go hat in hand and resurrect the reverse merger and install Gloria as our Commissioner. Pretty f-ing simple. Or we go get Sac. St as our 8th member and call it a day.

Yep, they were taking advantage of the two schools and also acting like they were doing this out of the kindness of their heart. The MWC could have with the two schools and tried to have a fair outcome for all sports. Instead, we had to go to the WCC for our other sports because they were reasonable.

It is a great point you make about not getting paid for the away games. If you have a home and home, then the home team gets what they make. In this situation, the MWC is getting paid whether they are hosting or visiting. It's ridiculous.

Shrewd? Okay, fine, say that if you must.

But after all the money (donations and season tickets) I spent on Oregon State sports for decades, it would have been completely unacceptable for Oregon State to agree to the reverse merger Gloria Nevarez wanted, especially given the terms of the MWC/PAC-12 football scheduling agreement. A reverse merger would have meant the end of my support. And probably a whole lot of other Beaver fans, too.

Gloria Nevarez, a shrewd business woman. Sure. She shrewdly did a great job of pi$$ing a lot of us off.

Now the great Gloria Nevarez will demonstrate her greatness by rebuilding her conference.

Um, the reverse merger would have preserved the Pac 12. Who says Gloria wanted it, unless we promised that she would be the Commissioner? Your wires are crossed. All this BS about us not wanting the MW cellar dwellars. Well, who will round out the Pac 8? Sacramento State? I dunno, maybe Idaho? Word is that UNLV is giving us the finger.

Why would a reverse merger ended all of OSU's support? Because you are too good for those lower life programs? Don't forget that OSU is the undisputed bottom dweller of the Pac-8/1-/12 in FB.

UNLV is still in play, along with UTSA and Connecticut. It appears some A.A.C. schools played us, and unfortunately that happens. Worst case we could take Hawaii for football, and Gonzaga for everything else. I appreciate our leader's effects to reassemble the best conference possible.

When the leadership at Boise State and Fresno State announced they were joining the PAC-12, they talked about making improvements to their athletic departments. Colorado State and San Diego State have both built new football stadiums in the last 10 years. Utah State fans on one message board are talking about making improvements to their athletic facilities. Our new partners are stepping it up - it's awesome.

There was no support in Beaver Nation for the reverse merger. Just like no one goes to work and says "Hey, boss, give me a 20% pay cut!" I'm very pleased that Beaver A. D. Scott Barnes and Teresa Gould are doing the best they can to rebuild the PAC-12.

I know that you are a big proponent of the reverse merger but in all honesty, we (and OSU) would be better off as an independent than being part of a bloated MWC with the teams filled with teams that we wanted nothing to do with. It's not fair to them, but as we've learned in the past year, life isn't fair to anyone. The teams that we've been talking of leaving behind are probably worth $3 million per year whereas it looks likely that the seven teams we have are going to be worth up to $12 million per year. Including the scrubs drops the revenue per team down to around $7 million per year. It will take time to recover the money spent in this debacle but we are making the right moves.

Freaking out is always a great solution. Keep it up.

Perhaps your vodka and Coors Light idled mind will realize that not all of the remaining MWC members are real excited about UNLV and AFA getting big paydays.

Loyal has a crush on her, so everything she does is golden. Even when she's paying two schools 5-6x the annual media distribution to stick around....

Loyal is a good guy but seems to be stuck in the reverse merger or bust way of thinking. The conference is in a much better position now than they would have been with a reverse merger. OSU and WSU have a big say in how things are done now. In the reverse merger scenario, they would have given up that say to the entire MWC and Gloria Narvaez. We already have seen how they and she have overcharged us for games. Why would we trust them or her to have our interests in mind going forward?

Also, I am not sure if the AAC played us. Narratives change over time. But it does not appear that the P12 was going to help much with their conference leaving fees. If we were dying to have them join, we would have paid a lot to entice them. We didn't. So, I think that they were a part of the plan, just not the plan.

Loyal's crush has just given UNLV and AFA the opportunity to take $25-$30 million, then after getting paid pay their own $17 million exit fee, and come out $8 million to $13 million ahead. Even if the MWC amends the bylaws or applicable contracts to prevent that, this is an expensive band-aid at best. When the realignment discussion starts up again (whether that's tomorrow, next week or next year), the MWC will have nothing left to wave in front of UNLV or AFA.

It will take time to recover the money spent in this debacle but we are making the right moves.

I totally believe we're going to recover the money we're spending to poach other schools. Look, Washington State just might run the table this year and make it to the college football playoffs! (Go Cougs!) And during the Coug's homestretch run, what games is the CW going to be broadcasting?

WSU vs Hawaii
WSU vs Utah State
WSU vs Wyoming

Networks don't want to pay good money for that lineup.

I'm happy. 2 awesome things have happened:

1) PAC-12 got the 4 schools they wanted the most in Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Colorado State.

2) All the new schools, including Utah State, have either made recent improvements to their athletic facilities or are talking about making improvements. They're all stepping up!

Yes, so there's some negotiating going on to get that last school or two. That's how business is. The important thing is getting that last school or 2 added in time for negotiating the new TV contract.

That's not accurate. You have to have 8 full members who all play FB to be an FBS Conference.

Apparently my PACER access has lapsed and I can't pull the complaint. But NDC shows Susan van Keulen, a magistrate judge, assigned so far. Granted, this is early proceedings, but I am curious to whom this will eventually be assigned. Of the 14 actives judges, all are Biden or Obama appointees. Given this is an anti-trust case ... make your own conclusions.

Bingo! Reverse merger means we are destined to be in MWC, we now have more control in five years.
