Punter Michael Turk to return to ASU football after getting special waiver from NCAA

Training for the NFL is a full time job with so much of the evaluation coming down to specialized events such as the three cone drill and 40 yard dash. When James Williams and Hercules Mata'afa went pro early, both felt they were getting drafted by at least the 4th round and probably would have dropped school all together.

It would be helpful to have the NBA's declare but don't sign rule to allow teams to give honest feedback on where they see a kid on the draft board with some tips on how to improve their draft stock. NFL careers are short and players want as many years of getting paid as possible, it's always going to be a hard sell to convince kids who are ready to get paid to stay in school.

If you're not round 1 or 2, stay in school. Round 3 or 4 can easily turn into undrafted FA or not on a roster at all.

Trading your senior year for no football at all is a bad trade.

Unless you are Michael Turk ...

Does this open the gates to "trying out" for the NFL, and then returning if you don't get picked up?
I don’t think it will. His argument was that COVID-19 forced the cancellation of his pro day at ASU and limited his opportunity to display his abilities to teams. It may open up the chance that others from this year who did not get drafted get to return, but can’t really see it happening beyond that. The NCAA is to damn stubborn to do anything forward looking that would actually benefit some of these kids when they make dumb decisions.
