All look like great pick ups but I have to admit I think they all know who the DC will be and are locking in their spots. Otherwise how do you explain a defensive recruit committing when he doesn't know who the coach is? This news must be coming forth any day now.

They don't. All credit goes to their recruiters. Breske had VERY LITTLE to do with a 90 percent of Washington State commits the last few years.

Britt, you probably know better than I, but word on the street is Papa Joe and Wilson are the guys hauling in the majority.

I've read this theory so many times and it just doesn't make sense. You think that news wouldn't leak out with social media? Recruit finds out who DC is, then tells dad, or coach, or buddy and it'd be on twitter within the hour.

The coaches have PT to sell, especially to JC guys.

Brit, you would know better than I but what on earth could this staff without a DC to draw a series of commits like this at this time? Playing time was most likely pitched at the time of their offers. Just interesting timing, that is all.

Honestly, this is the ONLY piece that doesn't make sense about a stealth DC- the idea that you'd have someone you could sell to the kids that you had to wait on for one reason or another seems thoroughly logical- expecting them to keep that quiet, though...

The other sell? I'm guessing the idea that we were soooo close to so many games, especially against Oregon, that it would be easy to show that if we get some good, quality players on the D, we'll turn a corner. I think it would be an easy sell to show, if we got ONE or maybe TWO stops on D, we'd have won X many games last year. Complete conjecture on my part but seems like a pretty easy leap.

They all know their position coaches, right? I don't think having an empty DC chair needs to stall recruiting.

I agree. My football IQ isn't as high as the "experts" on here, but I'm a lifetime sales guy. I could sell and recruit defensive players pretty easily, even without a DC. We have great facilities, a ton of playing time up for grabs, and a really well regarded offensive head coach.

I see tons of JC kids go to KSU from all over the country and I've always wondered why WSU hasn't chosen to build a similar reputation specifically with CA JC kids. I know KSU takes a ton of them every year so that helps them, but seems like you could develop a reputation pretty easily by taking 4 or 5 per year.

JC kids should know that they can come in and play right away or redshirt and then play at WSU.

The facilities I think will help. Selling a bad defense and special teams with instant playing time helps a lot too.

If WSU got production out of these kids right away they could change their fortunes very quickly.

Seems to me that WSU hasn't had a D-Coordinator for the past decade, and lot's have kids have agreed to come play in spite of that.

Facilities, this is the first year we have had the facilities in place. Secondly, Big Joe is Assistant Head Coach, he's much more than just a defensive line coach. Kid's love the guy, they want to play for him.

Spot on.

this is what i was thinking. i think scheme matters much less to defensive players than offensive, and if they like/trust their position coach, most probably couldn't give two craps who the coordinator is.

Well, you have a couple amazing recruiters in Ken Wilson and Joe Salave'a, first of all. Both of whom are among the top recruiters in the conference. Then you have a series of commitments, much like they did during this time last year, and a bunch of other guys that haven't pulled the trigger yet realizing that there's not a lot of spots to go around. That's about as simple as it gets.

At this time last year WSU landed about 7-8 commitments. This time it's 10 and it just so happens to be without a defensive coordinator, a coach that doesn't have a big impact on recruiting, anyway.

Yes, Britton, and on top of that several of the added commits knew each other or other people on the team. So it was partly a recognition that it was time to decide, and partly a friend telling them that it was a good decision.
