Rogers press conference

Started out a bit rough for me when he said he would "love his players unconventionally" when I'm pretty sure that he meant "unconditionally". That said, he's clearly a young guy who hasn't reached his ceiling yet. Agree that it felt that he took a couple shots at Dickert. In particular, it felt like he was saying that Dickert and his staff lost focus at the end of the season and they were looking ahead after an 8-1 start.

I did find it interesting that he kept saying that Pullman was like the Midwest. He's not wrong in some respects but that's the first time that I've seen a coach say that about the Palouse.

I've never put a lot into press conferences, but I thought he came across as genuine and grateful for the opportunity. I wasn't aware that he was at SDSU for 19 years. That's remarkable in this day and age. He choked up talking about coach Stig and his time at SDSU. I like that. It's common to hear coaches BS about how they want to be here for a long time, but I get that vibe from him. He's a small-town guy at his core. I thought his comments about "him and the staff not getting distracted about what else was better" was a nice (and accurate) shot at Dickert.

I don't know why, but I have a good feeling about this guy. I like that we're changing up the offense. I've been watching us throw the ball every down forever. What the Hell? Let's see how ground and pound works. Liked hearing him say that "we will hit." Liked hearing him say that he believes in creating the scheme around the players. Like that he's a 4-3 guy with some 4-2-5 mixed in. Not sure we can recruit at the necessary level, but I like the 4-3. Like that he absolutely prioritizes OL and DL. Again, proof will be in the recruiting, but I like it. Dude does not lack confidence. I didn't see any awe shucks about him.

Schulz not attending made me happy. I hope it's been made clear to him to stay away from WSU athletics until he leaves town for good.

Now that’s a good post right there.

He strikes me as someone who would rather be in a film room than do those weekly shows. I can't remember what Leach said during those stupid things. They get a small amount to do the programs.....I'd just tell them to keep $10,000 or so. Sorry I'm working on my profession.

Leach’s sand pit was unconventional love. ❤️

Maybe he meant "unconventionally?" He said it twice btw.

I believe he meant unconventionally.... as has been said; he is a tough dude. Love in today's world is all hugs and flattery. His way of showing love will not be hugs and flattery. He will show love different than the current culture (unconventionally). But he will show love and his players will play hard for him, because they will know he loves them.

The classical definition of love is "willing the good of another." Or as some have put it, "love is an action, not a feeling." In today's culture, that's not what it usually mean. So perhaps by "unconventional" he means love in a more classical sense.

If he was a political candidate a bunch of guys here would be yapping about dementia.

Who gives a shit if he misspoke on a couple of things, he was in front of a podium for a half hour, that’s gonna happen with most human beings.

My take, he’s going to have a tough football team, they are going to focus on the process, and he’s not going to be in a hurry to get out of town when he has success. Good enough for me.

Sorta like “brush” and “trees” and “forrest”, right?

Well I suppose we need a counterpoint or two........

"I'm a West Coast guy - I'm from Arizona". Arizona isn't the West Coast. Close I guess.
"Pullman is the Midwest (paraphrased)". Guess he was asleep when his plane flew over the Rockies and the Idaho mountain ranges.
"I've had other offers". Oh really. Pray tell which programs were those?
"We'll be a national contender". Um, you aren't in the MVC anymore.
"Unconventional love". Does he know that we don't have many sheep in Pullman?

All the Pullman talk and raising his kids here, etc. Dude you had never been to Pullman when you accepted the job.

The "crowd" size. Well since half the room was probably Athletics and Alumni staff, and press, color me unimpressed. As opposed to, say Mike Leach's presser in front of an estimated 1,100 people. Who spoke for all of 4 minutes pre-questions and made sure to reference and thank every former HC all the way back to Walden.

I guess that's enough negative Nancy talk. Proceed with the worshipping.

I'm not arguing he misspoke. I'm offering an explanation for the use of "unconventional" as a modifier to love.

Nobody is worshipping.

Most are waiting to see him coach at least one game before passing ultimate judgment.

I will say that I mentioned the "unconventional" just because it surprised me.....but I'll by saying that I don't think it merits any analysis or in-depth discussion. It was just kind of a jarring start for me. All of us know that it doesn't matter what he says up there anyway....it's what happens on the field. If he can win 9+ games a season he can be as unconventional in his love as he wants to be....as long as he stays within the bounds of the law (I'm looking at you, Gesser). LOL

Ok, now we are in the wheelhouse of the Love God-like Mighty Loyal One. Thanks for the lead-in! :)

First, I don't think Gesser's quest for a hand job or BJ from his masseuse or trying to seduce that WSU staffer (?) qualifies as unconventional love. Just disgusting.

Second, I have no problem with unconventional love, as long as (in my case anyway) it does not involve other men or animals. And since bestiality is a felony in both WA and SD, I doubt that's what Rogers meant. Now if he came from New Mexico or West Virginia, where it is apparently legal, I might have concerns.

Finally, I am going to surmise that "unconventional love" may mean "tough love". OK I guess, although CML got a shitload of flak for sending his lineman to that press conference after Utah (?) showed them a little man-boy love.

go away, loser

go away, loser
I'm not even warmed up yet. Did you say "go away loser" to the posters who doubted our choice of Paul Wulff?

I'm sure Rogers and staff are great guys and coaches and will have successful careers. That said, for a school that supposedly was going to keep funding Athletics at a Power 4 level, and that supposedly ramped up the Asst. Coach salary pool, this is IMHO a terrible hire and will bring us back to Wulffian success. I mean shit, when you poach players and coaches from Wulff at Cal Poly, who has gone 6-16 the last 2 years, WTF do you expect some of us to say?

If, as I have already stated, WSU wins 7=8 games in 2025 I will come here, say mea culpa, and gladly take the onslaught of bashing and insults that I will rightly deserve. And as a Coug I hope that happens. In the meantime, I am not going anywhere. And I am a paying patron. So how about you go away, freeloader?

Finally, go look at how UNLV is doing with their new coach and recruiting. You know, that school that doesn't meet the Pac's metrics?

The thing with Soni Finau is he's listed at 6-2 345 and his highlights show he can move. IDK why a guy like that is at Cal Poly, but seems like he can help. Maybe Wulff finally figured out 250 pound lineman are a problem? Rogers wasn't the only FBS coach after Finau.

Your not saying this but this hire isn't like the Leach hire and it was never going to be even remotely like the Leach hire. With Wulff there wasn't much substance. He was quickly in way over his head. Rogers isn't stepping into the same level of conference but there are obviously different challenges. He's going to make mistakes but if his foundation is really built around hard work and toughness that's a pretty good place to start. If he's not hardheaded and willing to adjust and grow we could have something.

I'm underwhelmed by a lot of the same things that have been mentioned here and there but it's January and he needs a staff and players. Hopefully a longer runway for the next recruiting cycle will improve things.

We're mostly playing a mid-level G5 schedule next season, so I don't think the step-up in competition is going to overwhelm the kids from SDSU. Most of their recruiting bios match up with the kids we've been recruiting here for decades.

Rogers wasn't the only FBS coach after Finau.

Really? What FBS coaches? According to 24/7 (below) he entered the portal on Jan 6 and signed with WSU on Jan 8. No other teams are mentioned. Same with ESPN (also below).

It's out there & you seem to have the access. In the end that's just 1 data point. The question is whether he can play? Who else recruited him is a tell, but f he can play it doesn't matter to me where he came from or who else recruited the guy.

Fixed your post. With a nod to Anne McCoy on the second edit. And no it isn't out there. Unless you can show me otherwise.

I'm really trying to stop but between you koolaid drinkers and Brand X it is hard to stay away from the keyboard. :)

Perhaps you need an intervention?
