Schmedding is gone

Arbuckle deserves it too, if he wasn’t 29 and at the hip with Mateer, he’d be gone. I’d still like to see him go and us go to a more traditional offense.

I don’t see how Mateer stay with all the big, life changing cash out there. Ie: see Cam Ward for an example. You can’t blame a kid for leaving for life changing resources. CF now officially sucks.

I really like Mateer but he is not an NFL QB. I can't blame the kid for looking to make his life changing money now while he can. I won't root for him once he leaves (if he leaves?) but I won't hate him.

I think it’s a little early to say that. He’s more suited for the NFL than Ward was at this point in his career. At least Mateers not fumbling the ball twice a game.

Wasn’t Mateer #1 in td’s in the nation as a 20 year old?

He's a good college QB and he has good stats...but those stats are fools gold. He is playing against bad competition and most of his hype is from his ability to run. He has very average arm strength and missed out on at least a half dozen TD's because his receivers outran his throws. He was consistently ineffective in the second halves of games. A lot of that falls on Arbuckle, but he cost us games by regressing to his weird sidearm throwing style at times.

If he stays at WSU and then goes on to the NFL, I'll root for his success....but I see Tim Tebow when I watch Mateer play. Tebow won a Heisman but didn't do squat in the NFL. I like Mateer and he was fun to watch in the first half of the season but the guy on the field right now is not a great QB.

You and Biggs are the only football fans in the country it seems, who don’t understand how special John Mateer is as a young, developing QB in his FIRST year starting.

He will most certainly be a top NFL draft pick next year when he becomes eligible.

Are you proud saying you believe a 20 year old kid has no future?

I mean, over a 4-5 game stretch he was over 70% with like 18 tds and no picks…something like that.

As a broncos fan and watching Tebow spike routine throws into the dirt I can tell you he’s most certainly not Tebow.

I think it’s too early to say he’s not an NFL qb. I also think it’s too early to say he’s a sure fire first rounder. He has a lot of upside but also needs a lot of growth in the pocket. He’s a helluva athlete and he has plenty of arm. And he’s a winner.

We’re a ways off from this but it’s been funny seeing all the Bo Nix detractors eat their words. Checkdown merchant, not a good enough arm, blah blah. It’s not easy throwing for 75% against air let alone with 11 guys out there who’ve been watching tape on you all week.

Tebow is an incredible athlete and a fierce competitor.

Its hard to break a guy like that from the habit of putting the team on his shoulders and making every play happen; I'm not sure that is something that can be coached out of a guy. We 've seen it with other dual threat qbs as well, regardless of how "good" or "bad" their arm was. I think a lot of that can be mitigated with a coach(es) and teammates who can and will take some of the burden off instead of expecting these kids to come in and be Jesus in cleats. Unfortunately history has shown us that this isn't the case more often than not.

I'm not proud of anything. I'm saying that I see a guy who is a great runner with a very run of the mill arm and limited ability to read defenses. He's only a sophomore and we certainly could be seeing a pretty typical sophomore slump but when it has mattered in the past month, he's failed to lead us on scoring drives more often than not. And his wonky ass sidearm throw is not going to cut it in the NFL. He frequently misses on touch passes and he doesn't have the arm to throw it reliably more than 35 or so yards downfield. Maybe he'll get a better coach who will break him of those bad habits and maybe he'll get stronger where he's not underthrowing guys...but right now, he's not a very good QB in the second half.

In the last 20 minutes or so of the Wyoming game, this is what happened when he dropped back to throw a pass:

Incomplete
Incomplete
Incomplete
Sacked for a 6 yard loss
Incomplete
Intentional Grounding
Interception

Now, to be fair to John, our OL was pretty terrible so it's not all on him....but you can't finish a game with those kind of results and think that you are ready for the NFL.

The Oregon State game was primarily a defensive failure and it's not John's fault that Kyle Williams fumbled the ball away so I won't say anything on that one.

Looking at New Mexico, our first four drives of the second half ended in punts. If we score on any of those four...we win the game. Again, not all John's fault but getting outscored 24-7 in the second half by a bad team isn't a good look. I have no problem with saying that the defense was the biggest villain of the story, but offensive ineptitude was rampant in that second half.

I'm a fan of Mateer and hope he stays at WSU and continues to mature. He's a great competitor and far better than anyone predicted before the season started. I'd be thrilled to see him prove me wrong and have a long NFL career. I just feel like his issues outweigh his strengths when it comes to top level success.

I was very impressed with Nix at Oregon, and was hoping with so many other QB's in the draft this year that he would fall to the Seahawks at #16. No such luck. I think he will have a long NFL career.
