Very good for the team. Exciting to see a player at that level get inserted immediately. Should be involved in the return game, too.

that's just insane--it's going to be like watching the Harlem Globetrotters out there with opposing DB's just flat-out confused with those guys running circles around them.

Yes, adding he and Marks- along with the rest of this recruiting class (one more of whom probably gets a redshirt now) should more than make up for the loss of Mayle and Myers, and stretch opponents coverages more. This team will be better on the field and in the win-loss column.

Very good news. Not only is he a great player, but more importantly, WRs take a beating in Leach's system. We need quality depth there, and we have it.

This is huge. True Cougar fans are excited about WSU football!

I wonder what kind of production they could get out of Lilenthal, Baker, Thompson and say Dimry as starters. Seriously, having Priester playing this year is not just another receiver...but maybe an exceptional receiver.

While the Cougars are adding a potential offensive difference maker in Priester, the huskies lost their only returning starting offensive lineman in three year starter Dexter Charles. He has to stop playing due to bad knees. They will be going into this year with an entirely new offensive line. I feel bad for Charles, but I do not feel bad for Petersen or the uw.

Petersen couldn't beat an FBS team with a .500 record with all of those All-Americans, high draft picks, and John Ross. Doesn't bode well for what he can do this year.

(For what it's worth, I expect UW to not be the complete tire fire some expect ... they don't have a lot of difference-makers, but they still have a pretty solid roster of good athletes. Some guys will emerge for them who few have heard of right now. Still, here's hoping we see a nice 4-8 or something over in Montlake this year.)

I believe that the Cougars will finish higher than the uw in the standings. A new QB standing behind 5 new starters is a lot to ask for any team. Regarding the defense, teams replace starters all the time in college. But, losing three high drafts picks is something a little different.

I think 4-8 or 3-9 sounds about right.

Priester had offers from Ohio State, Georgia, TCU, Clemson and was rated 170th overall in ESPNs top 300.

I can't remember anyone since Devard Darling with this kind of hoopla.

While you're at it, look at Tavares Martin's offer list. Some time ago, I asked the question: when was the last time two WRs of their caliber took the field for WSU football at the same time?

Yes that is correct. He played last year as a Fresh but due to the run off rule approval he has 4 to play 3 and is now eligible immediately
Brand X says that he has 4 to play 4. He only played in the first game last year and apparently that counts as his red-shirt year. I have no idea whether they are right or not. If he is as good as rumored then he won't last four years. If that good the NFL will have grabbed him prior to his senior year.

He's listed as a redshirt freshman on the official roster. That suggests 4 to play 4, but if he's a "next level" guy, I see him at WSU for three years at most.

Wasn't holding my breath on this one. Awesome news!

Marks, Priester, & potentially Martin (unless they now redshirt him) absorbs the loss of Mayle & Meyer.

These three definitely are an upgrade in speed and athleticism, although Mayle should continue to develop in the NFL. He hasn't played a lot of football.

Yeah it looks like he's got 4 to 4. I guess he didn't play enough for it to count for his eligibility so he can claim the RS eligibility. This is awesome.

Cool your jets Yaki. We still don't know if he'll live up to the standard set by Johnny Forzani, Blair Bomber, and Henry Eaddy.

haha, to be fair, Marquess Wilson was pretty damn good. Too bad he hated to practice.

If Martin is good enough to crack the rotation, you don't redshirt him. He plays now if he can see the field, even if it's spot duty.

You are correct. I forgot that some here proclaimed Mike Vandenkolk as the next Levenseller. As for Marpuss Whinesome, did WSU actually exclude him from the media guide's "Cougs in the NFL" page?

If you look at the production from the 2nd team WR's from 2014' (Lewis, Galvin, T Baker and Theron West) it comes out to 122 catches. The top four leading receivers from the 2009' team (Karstetter, G Simone, Jeffrey Solomon and Blackledge) had exactly 122 catches as well. It not a stretch to convince a really good HS wide receiver that he'll have more catches early than if he were to go to another school....even if he were the first off the bench.

Our WR draw will be one of the best in the country very soon. We already put Mayle in the NFL, and Marks will probably get drafted. Cracraft probably also will find a spot. We may be looking at a WR drafted every single year from WSU and that's a gigantic draw for premiere talent.

Here's an interesting fact I just looked up. In the last 4 years a Leach receiver has started in the Super Bowl.

2012 - Welker
2013 - Crabtree
2014 - Welker
2015 - Amendola

I think either Martin or Sweet gets a redshirt, even if they're "ready" now. We've got plenty of quality WRs on the roster now, there's more value in having a 2016 redshirt freshman who is stronger, maybe faster, and more precise than there in in having a 2015 true freshman, 8th on the depth chart and making 10 catches.

Makes sense but if they are in the 2-deep they will play. Leach has said a bunch of times the best play.

Already chimed in but want to say this ... I've seen some people say that you don't need great WR talent in the Air Raid, and either say (or imply) that you can throw some walk-ons and decent receivers out there and that the offense will still work. I disagree ... we've seen the offense get bogged down plenty of times, especially in the red zone. I think the offense is a tailwind, but you still need good athletes who can create separation, be tough to cover, and get yards after the catch. Between this infusion of talent and the improvement we expect to see in the running game, I'm hopeful the offense can be more effective this year.

Great way of putting it. The Air Raid is a tail wind. The better the athlete, the more you get out of the system… Love it 425. Gonna use that in the future… ;)

I sure wouldn't go that far, at least not where the super stud receivers are concerned. Outside of Ohio State and Michigan, I can't think of any other cold weather schools that are a consistent WR destination, and our geography complicates that all the more.

With that said, I do agree with your premise. If we continue to put up air raid numbers and start winning some games, we WILL be a destination choice for the 2nd tier receivers that Leach has always built on. I'm not talking about castoffs, I'm speaking of the 3 and 4 star kids who just drop off the radar of USC, UCLA, etc.

It's very true. It does have the advantage of helping teams get the most out of their players by the design around attacking the open space. So a slower guy can still find an opportunity to get open because of the way the system stretches the defense out allowing for space to be created. Now the better the player the more and more the design can exploit things. The repetition also helps. It's a great offense for programs that have talent deficiencies because it's easy to learn and still get results out of it, but once you start adding better and better athletes to it the system feeds itself higher and higher and higher.

Thanks ... this is a great explanation of what I alluded to re a tailwind (glad I didn't attempt to lay it out, as you did so better than I would have). The offense can address talent deficiencies to a certain extent, but it's not magic, and difference-makers will help get it to the next level.

Well this year we already have two 4 star guys on the field for sure in Priester (4 Star ESPN 300) and Gabe Marks (4 star rivals), and if Martin plays he will be the 3rd (4 star ESPN) so we are already at that point of getting the 4star WRs people just don't realize it yet.
