I just had a Tech grad tell me that 7 of the 8 biggest donors for Texas Tech had agreed to put up $1 million each for a total of $7 million to try to lure Leach back to Tech. Don't know if it's true...but damn......

I would love to see him get an agreement upon a full apology and payment from them. Then when the check clears, tell them to pound sand. For about half that, they could buy a significant stake in a certain college basketball program in the Northwest and spend plenty of time with Leach.
Agree, except for him most likely leaving. Every year he stays makes it more likely he retires as a Coug. Where do we put the statue?I gotta say, just trying to look at it from CML's side... what has changed? OK. The admin at TT but has the state? The sovereign domain (EDIT: immunity, sorry. habit) issue?
"First time, shame on you. Second time, shame on me".
I just don't see CML doing it. Why would he 'look back' on it in this way? Financially, keep looking back. I get that. But to go back there to what? Fulfill some emotional need? Other than financially he is owed, I'm trying to understand any motive for him to go back there. And he shouldn't have to 'go back there' to get his money... I guess every thing I can come up with for a reason for him to go back is, in some form, emotional. I just don't see CML as an "emotional" guy.
And to be clear, I 'm not some snowflake that hopes and wishes and I have my heart set on the concept that he is forever a Coug... He most likely is going to leave WSU. Just the odds, folks. I HOPE he sticks around, no question! But just the odds of being a football coach... anyways, my .02.

That is a lot of money to turn down. I would imagine from Tech’s standpoint how much more are they going to donate to make admin comfortable . Everyone has a price, and no matter what an AD says if they can get an extra 20 million a year for the rest of the department they might change their minds .I just had a Tech grad tell me that 7 of the 8 biggest donors for Texas Tech had agreed to put up $1 million each for a total of $7 million to try to lure Leach back to Tech. Might be a lot of money to turn down, but look at it this way. If you worked for company A that let you happily do your job, stayed out of your hair, and pretty much gave you a “you can stay here till you retire we will keep giving you healthy raises assuming you continue to be above average vs your peers, and the hardest part of your job is already done (picking up the pieces from the dude that worked this job before you and shat all over the office).” That company’s paying you $100K currently. Company B says we will give you $130K a year for five years, but know that if retired people who like to check in on the companies performance ( yeah we expect you to perform well above our historical averages) and if we don’t like everything you’re doing, saying, tweeting, etc you might get fired, and oh by the way we might find a BS loophole to not pay you for work already done. That is a lot of money to turn down. I would imagine from Tech’s standpoint how much more are they going to donate to make admin comfortable . Everyone has a price, and no matter what an AD says if they can get an extra 20 million a year for the rest of the department they might change their minds .
Last year Tenn 6 mil had Leach’s attention .
Whether or not it's true (it's not), CML isn't setting a foot on TT campus until there is a genuine apology from the regents AND they pay him his money, neither of which will ever happen.Have heard the same thing. A couple of Leach's ex-players have hit it big in the oil patch and wanted to bring back their old coach.
Word on the street was Leach wanted a formal apology from some people regarding the James situation before they would even talk contract. Those people refused and this deal fizzled.
Talk is one of those same oil guys also pulled money for a planned stadium renovation project after the AD refused to try to make any attempt to make a deal for Leach or Dana Holgerson work.
This is pure coffee shop/ golf shop talk so take it for what it is worth. I'm not a Tech alum/backer but know some that seemed fairly plugged in.
Tech's new coach will have zero honeymoon period and he better produce quickly or their already fractured fan base will blow completely apart.

You have 5K+ posts here. If you won Powerball, Cougs would be playing at Flatlandcoug stadium next year.I think all of us agree that there are too many egos and the whole issue is too personal for Leach to have any real likelihood of ever considering Texas Tech again. I was just shocked that seven people love Texas Tech football enough and Mike Leach enough to pony up $1 million each. No offense to WSU, but if I were to win the $266 million Powerball on Saturday night, they will not be getting a million dollars from me. I'd probably put up $100k per year that would eventually turn into that kind of money, but I can't envision ever giving $1 million just to make one guy happy. Too many good causes in the world for that kind of silliness.

And you have inadvertently, yet eloquently, illustrated why the west coast doesn't have the same culture as the mid-west, regarding football. I know a lot of mid-west folks personally, UO specifically, a bit of northern TX. Bit of Kansas. That area. To a certain extent, I'm assuming you know this already but I'll just put this out there.I think all of us agree that there are too many egos and the whole issue is too personal for Leach to have any real likelihood of ever considering Texas Tech again. In Ellensburg.
Guys, this thread is kind of dumb IMHO. Coach is never going back to Texas, or TT specifically. Why would he? WSU is a better program than TT. And Pullman is a better place than Lubbock.
And not to pile on you but just to show the comparison... It isn't like the south doesn't have fishing, as an example. They have some of the best bass fishing of anywhere. And they'll buy the best boat they can get their hands on and make sure if goes 65 mph on an smooth lake. It isn't like they don't have extra-curricular activities in the south. They just get behind stuff. They go "all in".Again, the only reason that I mentioned it was that I was floored at the numbers. Coug95man2 pointed out the obvious takeaway from my reaction to the numbers. Having grown up out west in the mountains where hiking, fishing, hunting and other activities were a priority over football, I simply can't envision taking a large amount of money like that and giving it away for a football coach. It's all about perspective and priorities.

I don't think it's as simple as people from the midwest and the south are fundamentally more inclined to commit to things than people out west. I know plenty of people here that half-ass things all day long. And it's not as simple as my comment about growing up in the mountains in the west. Lots of people out west haven't hiked more than 50' in the past 10 years, never shot a rifle and don't understand the fine line between fishing and standing on the side of a lake or river looking like an idiot.
If anything, people out west have been conditioning themselves to think that they are too good to waste their time on football where people in the Midwest and the South are conditioned to think that there's no better way to spend a Saturday.
Sounds like a President Jay Inslee could help the South and the Midwest fly over country regain the proper perspective and prioritiesAgain, the only reason that I mentioned it was that I was floored at the numbers. Flat a semi over simplification. In the south you are correct they think of it as a religion. But the truth is there are "more" distractions out west. In OKC and the Norman area, how many sports teams do they have? One, and they had to steal it. But during their great run that set the tone they were the only game in town. LA? You now have two Bball teams, two NFL teams, two baseball teams and two high level Pac 12 colleges. What about the bay area? Seattle?
I think there is some truth when the culture was set many years ago that there wasn't the same activities that there are out in the Pac 9/10 and now 12.

There are a lot of distractions everywhere and plenty of competition for "hobby" time and money everywhere. I think the biggest difference is people in other regions schedule real life and extra curricular events around college football more so than the west. Not many people are scheduling weddings and other real life stuff around a football game on the west coast. People hunt, fish, hike, golf, or whatever everywhere. On the west coast they're more likely to forego a football game to do those things and in other regions more people will forego or the other stuff for football or schedule around football. There are a lot distractions everywhere.
I purposely scheduled my wedding on a Cougs bye week 2 years ago. I did some contract work down in Louisiana when the deep water horizon popped. I was on a clean up barge in a port down there from September to December. We worked 12 hour days. On Saturdays, the barge captain cut work short at 10am because it was LSU game day. Sundays we worked a little longer, but the day was again cut short cause it was Saints game day. If football was on, work was off. It was kind of nice. We still got paid our day rate no matter what.
I purposely planned my wedding and the birth of my two children outside of Cougar football season. I couldn't risk anniversaries and birthdays coming up and disrupting my falls.I purposely scheduled my wedding on a Cougs bye week 2 years ago. There are some of us up here as well!
There are people that do it. The real test is how many people would schedule something like a wedding outside of football season so their guests don't have to skip a game. In some places I imagine that your wedding might not be well attended if you schedule it on a Saturday during football season.I purposely planned my wedding and the birth of my two children outside of Cougar football season. I couldn't risk anniversaries and birthdays coming up and disrupting my falls.
I have also regularly skipped weddings during season to attend Cougar games. My wife believes that I am really wacked in the head. I think all of my friends feel the same way except my best friend, who is an SC alum.
Here is the typical interaction between my wife and me when we were younger.
SD’s Wife: I cannot believe you are skipping their wedding just because you want to fly to Pullman for a meaningless football game.
SDCoug: I cannot believe that they are so inconsiderate that they are intentionally getting married during college football season. And on a Saturday no less!

Considering the percentage of marriages that eventually end in a divorce, you may well be on to something. The football record will still be on the books long after Betsy has run off with the mailman.I was expecting your response to be...

I am willing to allow a friend to get married during football season. But, they should use the following:Here is the typical interaction between my wife and me when we were younger.
