The cowards up north

Do people view Lloyd like they did Few when he was an assistant? I wonder if they would be using Lloyd and GU's reputation of "doing it the right way" to help get out from under sanctions. If he brings GU like success great. If after 3 or 4 years it's not working out they can move on after repairing their reputation.

The regionalist myopia plaguing this board is failing to recognize Arizona has a national focus for its basketball program and will in no way condescend to hire an assistant from elsewhere. They may promote someone like Miles Simon from within, or, more likely, hire the biggest name coach they can find.

Sean Miller fired at Arizona. Word is Tommy Lloyd from GU might be their top target. Would be great to see him leave and crack that façade of GU being a lifetime job.

Sean Miller getting fired and further adding to the mess, chaos, etc, that is Arizona, further helps WSU getting Eason.

UW is also a Mess. So its really between Marquette and WSU getting Eason.

Lloyd is arguably the best recruiter west of the Rockies for the past 15 years and one of the top recruiters in the nation. If you can land the talent he has at GU then you can certainly do it at Arizona.

I wasn't really just talking recruiting. First, there is typically a significant difference between being the recruiter and the closer and the head coach is the closer. On the other hand, it's UA. Recruiting (even without bags of money) shouldn't be an issue.

I was more wondering if he was perceived like Few was when he was an assistant. There were plenty of people who saw him as not only a big reason but the reason for the 'Cinderella' years and didn't blink when Monson moved on. I just wondered if Lloyd had that "can't miss" type of feeling as an assistant.

Lloyd would be nothing but a scraficial lamb imo. A nice on paper hire that would appear to drain the swamp, go thru a few down years possibly with sanctions. Then fire him and bring in high profile coach that they wanted anyways as the program savior!

Gonna be nearly his lifetime before Few steps down that is for sure. Doubt that they would hire a career assistant at UA. Much more likely to get someone with top notch coaching experience. Tho, the upcoming sanctions make the job totally unknown. Should get 3 plus year post season ban.

Perhaps Luke Walton, good coach with strong program ties and likes to golf!

You are clueless.

One of Arizona’s primary boosters is also a zag booster and he loves Tommy. It’s all but a done deal unless Few promises to step aside in the next 3-5 years IMO.

Lloyd isn't exactly a "spring chicken" any longer. He's 46 so has to want to make the next step even if it's not at GU. While I never thought Few would coach to the grave it doesn't appear he's leaving any time soon.

Few was like the annoying little brother as an assistant. Monson was the chosen one in waiting and Few was the hard working manager/grinder/towel picker upper. Fitz ran the program his way.

If there was every a right place/right time guy, it was Mark Few. Monson bailing for Minnesota was his lottery ticket. And, quite honestly, at the time, Gonzaga was teetering on the brink of financial collapse as a university. Few was a cheap hire.

Obviously, Few has done wonders and built a machine - so good on him. But anybody who says that in 1995 they were talking to a HOF coach, they're lying.

Lloyd came in as a pretty well regarded regional player and fast-talked his way up the food chain. He doesn't know anything but the Gonzaga way so he is passionate about it. He was one of the first to figure out international guys were the ticket to the top and that was more of a fluke in that he'd played overseas and liked to travel - so win win as far as scouting the Euros and Canadians. He's the guy the players trust. Few is a bit fussy.

Few's not going anywhere, anytime soon - he's not Urban Meyer. He has, quite literally, the perfect set up in Spokane. Making good coin, going fishing whenever he wants, non-critical media, AD who will spend whatever is needed to maintain what they have.

Lloyd should take the money and run directly to Tucson if offered. He'll be another 10 years older by the time Few hangs it up.
