Hey, without question the situation was grotesque. I'm not defending the actions of anyone involved, but after reading through the case details, it doesn't appear that Hector committed any crimes. A girl consented to getting it on with a group of guys, and Hector was there, but didn't participate. He also wasn't involved in the video taping.
Stanford backed away because they didn't need the risk, particularly after what their program has already been through with this type of thing. Other schools backed off too.
Again, I'm not defending the kid, and I'm certainly not condoning what took place. It's beyond my scope of comprehension, frankly; however this type of thing is not uncommon anymore, unfortunately. If a woman consents and a man or a group of men participate, do they deserve to have their futures wiped out? In this case, Hector didn't participate, and that was confirmed after a lengthy police investigation. It's a tough call.
