We need to confront reality: we have terrible leadership at WSU

I can also confirm that the WSU Athletic Department/Pullman central apparently made concerted efforts/decisions to cut down on interaction with Cougar fans/alumni over the years. The Cougar Club presidents were all invited to summits with the AD before a home game for several years and the presidents ALWAYS pleaded for more interaction and reaching out by the gang from Pullman. The presidents, most of whom were business men and women in their communities, begged for help with drumming up support. They pointed out that there needed to be investments made in order to receive a return, but the results were dropping more and more events as the years went on. Apparently the feeling was that a few post cards, emails, and a phone call from a student every year or two was entirely adequate. Sure, let's pay attention to the main hive in Pullman rather than listening to the movers and shakers in the communities that WSU needs the support from.

For those that may be ignorant of how it used to be, there were 11 Cougar Club golf tournaments that raised money for the AD back in late 90's into the 2000's. Whatcom, King, Pierce, Vancouver, Wenatchee, Moses Lake, Tri Cities, Spokane, Walla Walla, Pullman all had tournaments that were a lot of fun, raised money, and raised the WSU profile in those communities. All fund raising ideas that were put forward by the presidents were ignored. Got a lot of "We'll look into it and get back to you on that". Funny how that just never seemed to work out.

Should any of you be surprised that enthusiasm faded away over time?
Stretch did a great job running the pierce county club.

Listen to this man! The Mike Price recruiting dinner was very well attended.

WSU stopped caring. And Chun was above it.

This started happening while Moos was still there, but as we all know Moos had one foot out the door for ___ years before he departed so it shouldn't come as a big surprise.

What I will say about Jeff Banks is that out of all the coach calls to the Pierce County Cougar Club, and any coach or player that spoke at a golf tourney or recruiting dinner, he was the one that was the MOST outgoing, enthusiastic, energetic. If you had to pick between all of the folks I am talking about to get someone to sell ice cubes to Eskimos, Banks would be the guy.
I mean there’s a reason he’s married to a pole assassin 🤷

I also think he would bring portal guys in for the foreseeable future that we’d otherwise have no chance at. Think about the 4 star kid who he recruited in HS that went to Texas or some other sec school and couldn’t get the PT he wanted. If and when he has success Banks is moving on, but we just need someone with energy who’s learned from the best, wants a head coaching gig, and can get us through the next few years.

I'm kind of the opinion that I'd rather have a 55+ year old who actually might stick around for awhile.

Other than the fact that guys in that demographic are bailing out of the profession due to the uber slimy effects of NIL and annual portal movement.

We really just need to stopgap for the next couple years so we can figure out what the new Pac 12 will look like, who the new team or teams are and what the NIL landscape is and see how the cougs fit in and go from there

And someone who can recruit under these circumstances…Banks

Agreed, no school in the Bible Belt South is going to touch Banks with his former stripper wife. None.

I'd hire him for all the connections he has. Which are vast.

We are a school that gives you exposure for a better NIL deal for our best players. Like it or not, that's what we are. Focus on how to sell our strengths. Come to WSU, get playing time and exposure, and leave it a better opportunity comes up in a bigger program.

Mateer just jumped dozens of 4 and 5 star QBs with his NIL deal and basically guaranteed started job at Oklahoma. There are a TON of high school kids that would love to be in this position.

Not that I would know, but I don't think there is a former for that. Like the mafia and the Marine Corps.

Funny stuff coming from a lawyer. Right down there with politicians as one of the most despised professions.
Pole Dancers > Lawyers in my book.

And I watched her Jerry Springer appearance. I don't know if she was/is actually a stripper (like getting down to nothing or next to it) or just an exotic dancer. Gal has some athleticism.

Anyway, Banks makes $1.1M at Texas, the 3rd highest paid assistant. I doubt he's going anywhere like WSU. Particularly given the judgmental nature of its fan base (ex: Gibby).

Edit - list of assistant coach salaries. This link is pretty cool. How about Koetter at BSU? He's only making $475,000.

He married a stripper that uses a monkey in her pole dancing routine.
I am aware of his drawbacks, and not necessarily promoting him for our next coach. Just pointing out what we observed from our short interaction with him. And I think he was just a GA at the time.

Was involved with and leadership of my local cougar club for 5 or 6 years back in the early 2000's. Everything you wrote is correct about the mismanagement and lack of initiative from Pullman.
Good for you for giving it "the Good Old College Try". Lots of us appreciate your efforts, even if Pullman didn't.
Which region were you in? Still there? Just curious, and unlikely to remember you since I am so terrible at remembering names.

Columbia River Cougar Club, which covered the Portland area and SW Washington.

There is no Cougar Club here any longer. It was gone a year or two before they stopped ANWCF in the Portland market. Because who needs the extra $100k and tons of fan engagement? I think the last ANWCF I attended was Rolo's first year.

I'm sure we didn't have the biggest fish down here, but there were always some pretty big donors who attended. After Walden was put to pasture, the fire of the auction died and so did a lot of the giving, at least in my market. A lot of that had to do with Wulff and all the bad feelings about that, but there was a huge opportunity to re-engage donors with Leach and WSU admin was asleep at the wheel.

Chun didn't like the schmooze aspect of the job. It was very clear when you interacted with him. He was fine with connecting with a few big donors, but reaching out to the masses, wasn't his thing.

Moving forward, we need to rethink this strategy. Hint: Anne McCoy isn't going to do it, so she needs a solid deputy who will.

What's insane is that there were a few of us who told admin that we could just do our own thing without their help so they didn't have to feel obligated to oversee it or appropriate resources towards it (or minimal resources) and we were told flat out "no" and that they would not allow us to do anything associated with WSU if they didn't have their hand on it.

In some ways I get it - there could be some liability with an even that has a "WSU" label on it, but on the other hand any out of control or shady ish that could happen at an independent event could still happen under a sanctioned one.

Thank you again on behalf of all us good Cougars spread around the region! We gave it all we had.

I think the "Recruiting Dinners" lost some of their attractiveness due to there being more and more information and video of the recruits out on the internet, but there was still opportunity to tweak the format and continue having a great event featuring the new signees. Plus get the interaction with the coaches and players. Sadly they went in a different direction.

BTW, the decision to eliminate the Pierce County Cougar Club from what became the Night With Cougar Football, then a Night With Cougar Athletics was made without any alert or coordination with the PCCC. Boom, it suddenly was all in the hands of King County without any attempt to join up and use both groups for better results. Yes, some good things came out of it, but it was NOT an optimization at all.

FWIW, I think WSU would be happier if they could just have a private little dinner for the 20 biggest fish and just ignore the swarms of minnows that are out here supporting the Cougs.

I believe that they were very concerned about money and that there could be recruiting violations committed that would get the school in trouble with the NCAA. What a laugh that is today, and was even then with the SEC, Big 10, the uw with coffee cups full of cash, etc. I think there ended up being some issues with the annual Clambake event, but I don't know any specifics on thet front.

BTW, we had Marcus Trufant as our guest one time, and he brought his younger brother with him. One of the attendees asked his brother if he was going to follow Marcus over to Pullman to be a Coug. Oops! Some folks immediately started to tell Sam (name changed to protect the innocent) that he couldn't do that, and I also said that we were allowed to talk to him as he was there with Marcus, but were NOT allowed to do anything in any way that would be considered trying to recruit him to WSU. There was no way any of us would be getting WSU in trouble!

I think it was in 2021 that I had the opportunity to take a guest and enjoy the opening game in the AD's luxury suite. Was introduced to Chun, and I gave him a very quick background of my college and then PCCC experience. I then pointed out that since the PAC was trying to make money off the PAC 12 Networks that it would REALLY help them attract viewers if they would simply take steps to get accurate programming guide information out there for the planned content. He simply said they were aware of that and walked away. Hey Pat!! If you are aware of the problem why don't you do something to fix it? WTF?

I'm not a Walden fan (I recognize I'm apart of a different generation). I thought his radio shtick was overblown and lame, personally. Then his crying over firing Wulff...yikes.

But I agree, plenty of opportunity to engage with donors during the Leach years and that wasn't handled great. That area is bursting at the seams with plenty of alumni willing to engage.

No thanks needed, I was overjoyed at being able to be a part of the school I loved. I was even naive enough and young enough to think that I might want to leverage my experience into a position in the WSU organization; specifically, Topper was hired to engage donors and I had my sights on that position (though in retrospect I had ZERO chance at landing it considering my competition). Knowing what I know now, I seriously dodged a bullet and huge headache as I would have had to juggle my Coug-ness with being a suit who worked for WSU.

How refreshing would it be to have anyone in the AD who actually embraces being a Coug? They don't even have to be a grad or former athlete, but just dive in and do your best without having one foot out the door the entire time.

Trust me, I am no Walden fan.

I was mildly amused by his genteel old grampa schtick, and he DID stir up a lot of donations as the auctioneer when that was the format at the fund raisers, but he permanently burned his bridge with me after he went scorched earth on the fans who were critical of Wulff. Knowing now what I know about Wulff and his personal story, I understand better why someone would be protective of him, but Wulff had earned the criticism that was directed at him. Further, Walden never offered a mea culpa for his off the rails rant at the fans to my knowledge, so he can remain off the Cougar grid imho.

We're completely in the same camp on this.

I don't think there wasn't anyone who wanted Wulff to suck...he just did. And if you're bad at your job, it's not personal, you have to win games...or show at least some improvement. I didn't like the Wulff (or Rolo/Dickert) hire but I would've been more than happy to eat crow had I been wrong.

Thank God for small favors, huh?

Who is/was Topper? Not familiar with that name.

I'm not joking about wanting Robb Akey, but without question would support a strippers monkey.
I know you are not kidding...haven't understood what in his resume says he can be the person in charge to lead us through turbulent waters.

Robb was worshipped by the players. His connections to them is massive. He was literally loved by Alums all over the Palouse. His hopping from Pac-12 to Idaho to NFL to Central Michigan gives him a zillion connections. He loves WSU so much that he'd be here to save the program and not be an asshole hopper.

Sure you are.

Mostly bench player for the MBB team in '94-'95, shot a lot of 3's before that was the defacto state of the game. Always got a big rise out of the crowd when he came in. Not quite Vik-fu, but similar.

I would post a pic but he's been scrubbed from the web for some reason. His wife is in politics, that may be why but idk.

Well, thanks for the info, but still no bells ringing in my head for him.

I DO still hear the voices in my head though! :)

Topper was a good dude. Not tall enough to be a forward... not athletic to play the swing... okay dribbles, but not a pg...

Probably more of a LCSC player, but he was a good shooter

Pretty smart if I remember correctly
