What's up with the naming rights story?

I don't find it annoying at all. No other department in the University is expected to act as the de facto marketing department or be ambassadors for the school, and none of them generate TV revenue or ticket sales.

Other departments, the medical school in particular, contributed to the deficit as well.
That's because it has no impact on you. Believe me, from inside the system it sucks when a department that is a giant piece of the pie creates a mess, and then the ones that are much smaller pieces are expected to clean it up...and then they're allowed to keep making that mess.

As the saying goes, people don’t buy tickets for chemistry experiments.

Aren't you "picking" on Chun in this thread?

I don't see that reporting factual information is picking on him, but perhaps you are right. I'll stop - until year 2 is over at which time I hope I am eating a big plate of szechuan crow.

Nobody has been gushing over Chun, most of the comments have been of the he-deserves-some-time type in response to your incessant and unfounded criticism from the moment his name was announced as our new AD.

Um, well, numerous posters have gushed over Chun. Here'a couple from the Award thread.

"He’s done a great job"
"Chun's great"

And my criticism (of the hire, not the man personally) has not been incessant and I would argue is NOT unfounded. That said, no more criticism from me.

Doesn't it seem appropriate that people respond in the positive on a thread about him winning AD of the year? Not really sure I'd put either of your examples in the "gushing" category either, in the context for which they appeared. Prior to that, I've seen very little from anybody commenting on his job performance. Anyways...

There is a saying, "You have to spend money to make money."

This is the conundrum that big-time College Athletics (FB and BB mostly) has created, I'm afraid. Most Athletic departments don't make money, and if you took away the known and hidden subsidies that they get, they would all probably be dripping red ink. The desire to win above all else has created the ridiculousness of multi-million HC salaries and everything else that goes with it.

I can almost envision the day when the big Athletic schools get cut off from state funding completely, and become elitist, high tuition institutions. You want to experience the big-time college lifestyle with the fancy dorms and rec centers and FB teams? Get out the checkbook. You don't care for or can't afford all that? here is ABC state school with none of that. just education.

It is not fair to criticize Chun for falling short of your expectation for a “wow” hire. You should direct your criticism toward the guy that promised the wow hire.
