Wsu football recruiting staff

Still getting emails from Oklahoma because they knew how to sell Rose Bowl tickets in December 2002 and Sterk's staff didn't.

Sterk added that 3,000 to 5,000 Cougars fans bought tickets from Oklahoma instead after the Sooners satisfied their season ticket holders and put the remaining tickets up for public sale. Fans chose guaranteed Oklahoma tickets over the risk of being shut out in the Washington State ticket system, which is what happened when the Cougars went to the 1998 Rose Bowl.
Soooooo worried that Walden and all the good ol' boys wouldn't get their allotment that they shut out the entire Cougar fan base. I had to get my ticket in 97 from a customer of mine who had an extra because someone cancelled. As a student that had just left Pullman two years prior, that was about the only shot I had at getting a ticket.

Friends only got tickets because they were friends with big money donors who were buying up their allotment of what.. 15 tickets? 25? I can't remember, but iirc they provided tickets to 3 families.

It's been a "meet the new boss, same as the old boss" since the dawn of day, it feels like. WSU cannot get out of its own way. They make it hard to donate, and then they wonder why many are fickle fans.

Once again, reading comprehension escapes you.

I'll spell this one out for you though, since for some reason I seem to be in your sights today: Walden et al were/ are representative of the good ol' boy nepotism that rotted WSU athletics from the inside out because they cared more about they and theirs having a good timeand partying than creating a strong national product that would continue to provide entertainment and memories for generations to come. Lest you forget, I worked closely with the volunteer arm of the CAF (before it was the CAF even) for several years and was privy to such behavior first hand.

Was it Walden's fault directly? Of course not, but (again, I'll spell it out for those slow on the pick up) I used his figuratively as the symbol of said behavior because of his condescending attitude towards the fanbase and having seen such behavior in person, as I stated before.

The alumni assoc manages to call me twice a year.

The CAF recently sent me a letter that stated that they (somehow) didn't take my automatic deposit out for 3 months and that I would be hit with all three donations at once. Great.

I told you so. The coaches and the off field staff didn’t do shit for two years.

9 high school kids. 1 from California. Thank God for Bellingham having 2 kids. That was the first signing date. Fuc$ing pathetic.

They didn’t recruit. They didn’t have crap for offers out. They had zero clue where they stood with kids. Chun was caught completely flat footed by NIL.

I know there were issues with Turd. However, the off field guys should be up and down the West Coast and blowing up phones. They had zero idea what the fuc$ they were doing. And the staff that was kept should know better. Dickert should know better. 5 guys sign 2 kids each? And they had 2 years to build relationships? Wtf were they doing? CougEd could put on a WSU polo and get 2 kids to come play ball for a full scholarship. In 1 month.

And now here comes the second signing date. How many kids have they actually had on campus? How many verbals do they have?

You watch, if they don’t sign many kids it will be some sorry song and dance about adding guys this spring and summer.

This was a piss poor effort. And they KNOW it.
I’m not absolving Dickert of all responsibility here but this is/was mostly a Rolo problem as it’s primarily the HC role to organize and build excitement towards recruiting (or be in the same page with a COS type of position to do so). Either way it’s going to be painful this recruiting cycle. That said certainly seems like Dickert and staff are on it hitting the trail and building buzz right now so hopeful for next year and beyond.

They can't even run the program correctly...it's truly baffling how bad they are (CAF) at handling such simple requests...taking in people's money who willingly want to donate.

Sorry you lost me. Walden and others in the good ole boy network got first dibs on tickets? Is that the issue? How may top flight tickets do you think were given out?

The schools get crappy tickets. It is the Bank of America's and the like that got the good tickets.

But what would you have done with say 1000 of the tickets waldens cronies got?

The Cougars sold 26,000 of the school's allotment of 32,000 tickets for the Rose Bowl, leaving 6,000 tickets at $125 apiece to be paid for. It's the first time in 10 years a Pac-10 team failed to sell all its tickets to the game.

Sterk in quote above in the thread said about 3,000 to 5,000 WSU fans went to Oklahoma's site and probably another 1,000 to 3,000 probably said "f*** this" and stayed home (tickets were going for $8 on that golf course next to RB about 90 minutes before the game.)

Gotta hand it to Walden - he helped Sterk with this problem in November 2007. "I got the perfect coach to replace Bill Doba, you'll never have to worry about bowl ticket snafu's again"

Brady Crook? Failing upwards. Now pulling down $200k at Texas Tech.

I knew a lot of people, myself included, that went to the Oklahoma website to get tickets. Yes, we would have loved to buy tickets from WSU. But, WSU made it hard and a crapshoot whether we were going to be able to get tickets. So, we went to a place that would sell us tickets. That wasn't WSU.

My only Rose Bowl, which I was eternally grateful to have gone to, had me sitting in the very top row at the southern end of the bowl. Long story short - I didn't really get to watch the game because those seat are horrible, and given the choice I'd skip the bowl game if that was my only option. I seem to remember the Alamo Bowl was similar in that the only seats initially available through WSU were crap seats (and I believe we had a discussion on here about it) - thanks but no thanks.

Bleed, I was probably pretty near you up high on the south end for the first half. Crummy seats, yes, but there was one spectacular block that a WR put on DB in front of the east sideline on a long gain that we were in the perfect spot to see. I ended up with 2 seats there from WSU and 2 lower on the north end from somewhere else (might have been OU; I don't recall). My wife was in the north seats with son #2. Son 1 and I moved at the half when she told me there were two open seats near her. Your comment about top of the south end brought all those memories back...sigh...

check out the offer list of our latest QB commit.

The past two years were blown up. Zero relationships. Piss poor off field recruiting staff at best. Issues with Turd.

Im not surprised at all that they are racing around the nation chasing kids. No plan, no relationships, wildly late in hiring, total mess top to bottom.

They are a wreck. They are behind trying to get ahead. Believe what your eyes see. Stop making excuses.

Chun hired a 38 year old guy with zero head coaching experience, only slightly more Power 5 experience to run this organization. This isn’t just coaching up a defense. His role has changed. He is a CEO in charge of everything top to bottom. And he has no idea that the football website still has fired coaches listed as employed.

I wouldn't trade my experience for the world; had a fun roadie with some college buddies where we stopped at 6 flags, went to hollywood and got a photo with Tyra Banks, wandered around Pasadena on NYE, had a pretty fun pre-game/ tailgate in the parking lot. It couldn't have been anymore college roadtrip if we tried - a bunch of college dudes just crawling randomly around LA. Somehow ended up in a camper with Ryan Topper and a couple of other athletes (the guys I traveled with from Vancouver WA were track guys)... I've probably forgotten more than I remember.

One funny anecdote about Tyra - we're walking through Hollywood mall (I guess we were celeb spotting? Idk why we were there exactly...) and our buddy exclaims "Hey, I think that's Tyra Banks!" Of course we all say no it isn't, but at his insistence we go back and we're peeking around a corner trying to catch a glimpse and sure as shit, its Tyra. PEAK Tyra, btw. So bro wants to get a pic and we're all too chickenshit to ask, so we goad him to go and he does. We watch him approach the woman who was with Tyra (Tyra had went to the dressing room?) and ask if it was her, which she confirmed, and then he asks if we could get a pic, to which she announced to the world (and we heard from outside the store) "TYYYYYRAAAAA, these tired white boys wanna get their picture taken with you!" We just about died from embarrassment and laughter. Anyway, she came out and we got the pic, which I have no idea if it even still exists.

I am confused , how did Walden devise the ticket allotment?

Well, that's not his job.

And how about we give him a pass since he was left to salvage a season out of the pile of ashes Rolo et al left.

Who was he going to hire that in their first year was going to have an outstanding class. Leach probably hit in 10 kids his first year, and it was his second year he built the program on .

There was another coach who probably had similar type obstacles . Four head coaches in four years , no budget, no coordinator experience, no deep ties like Erickson had. In four years the Cougs were playing for the Rose Bowl.

Take a peek how many Cougs were drafted in the 78 draft… the cupboard was emptied out. You are spending valuable time pissing and moaning about what Dickert hasn’t been able to do… and anyone short of urban meyer would be facing the same issues .

Chun knew in August, maybe earlier, he was going to have to make some decisions on his HC and prepare for a potential firing and hiring. Is that not enough time to find someone?

Im not saying Dickert doesn’t have obstacles. Im saying his attention to detail, his lack of a recruiting plan and his own issues with hiring staff hurt him. He is not walking into this job with ANY experience as a head coach. He doesn’t know what he doesn’t know.

This is on the job training for a P5 team.

I am sure Chun started looking, but logic would say for 3 million a year, you might simply get a shot. Logic didn't prevail on this.

Good grief … when your boat is leaking mass amounts of water you don’t concentrate on a long term plan saying “when we get the boat bailed in five days, and patch the holes in five days .. before we do that let’s lay out the trip to sail to Hawaii “.

He wasn’t in a position to hire , recruit , etc until late November . He had to get his staff together . He had to jettison his entire offensive staff because Rolo had a system five people knew .

It is like your golf game … they get a mulligan. There is enough starters coming back to get wsu through 2022.

I knew Mulligan. He was a friend of mine. And sir, you are no Mulligan!

So while we are on Tyra stories....when I moved to LA in '88, one of the guys I worked with was a photographer with all of his spare time. He and his boyfriend would go to upscale parks, set up to shoot, and model wanna-be's would let them shoot in exchange for shots for their interview books. He did it for years; great guy and a pretty good photographer. One day we were talking, right after Tyra hit it big, and he pulls out a whole set of Tyra pics from when she was probably (judging by appearance and his comments) maybe 15 or 16.

It is a small world.

This is where the off field staff failed. They have to keep finding kids. They have to create a list of prospects. They can’t stop working. Even if they know they will be fired, they take this knowledge with them. It is their own professional development.

Same for the coaching staff. They have to keep recruiting and building relationships. If they get fired from WSU, they take this knowledge and relationships with them to their next job.

There is rarely a perfect situation to be hired as a HC. You will be up against it. However, he was the interim HC. He was running the program. Regardless of whether he was going to be hired or fired… he still had to run the organization.

Maybe the best thing that could happen for WSU is an “open 85.” They’ve had 3 HCs all in a row. The relationships with HS kids are a circus. There has been no consistent message from WSU. They may be better off going to the portal for the majority of their talent. Shorter timeline, kids have to choose faster, kids have had a chance to see what they want and don’t want….

You'd be surprised (or not) how dysfunctional the department is as a whole. I don't think Chun cares about things like this.
I'm not surprised. I interned, among other things, in the AD during my time there (pre-Chun) and the story remains the same today.

The problem is Chun should care. To me, he's another lazy AD.

Chun wants to polish his resume for his next gig.
Sgt. Schulz definitely was.

And Chun wasn't going to fall on his sword for Rolo.....and if the state is paying the settlement, there is your "moral hazard"

Do hope the lawsuit(s) reaches the deposition stage, no matter how bad it looks.

Schulz is a mixed bag. He's and academic without vision. He wants strong athletics to promote the Uni but doesn't want athletics to run the show.

Chun's problems go well beyond Rolo.

Schulz is an engineer and walking living example why you don't put engineers into positions of top leadership. He was brutal during SCB affair and like an engineer went out and bought himself a consultant (lawyer probe) to get a clean bill of health.

Chun isn't Sterk bad or Idaho AD bad. Will await depositions to see about real sh** show going on.

You are not going to acquire quality AD staff in that town who are doing this as their career - it is like a minor league baseball post for those on that track. They will scapegoat a departing coach vs getting their sh** together.

Marv Harshman wanted the AD gig BAD (to pad his very low salary), and left for the UW partly because he didn't get it. That would have been worse for football.

It's time for Chun to pony up some $$ and Dickert to hire a top notch director of player personnel and recruiting staff. Pay more than 50- 75k a year and get some real quality experienced people w connections organizing our recruiting effort. Hire Brian Watkins from UW or Silas Clapham from CSU. Dickert hiring his buddies Mesa and Schlaeger from Wyo or Rolo hiring his buddy Omura is not gonna get it done. We need top notch guys w contacts and Pac 12 experience who know hs coaches and handlers. We are about to have 10+ openings unfilled next Wed. That is a big deal and gonna hurt our program moving forward.
Totally agree that they should of put together a team in August. Would of been light years ahead of where they're now. Do it behind the scenes because your coaching staff may not be showing up soon and the institution is bigger than they are.
