WSU vs Zona game thread

Tough to reasonably critique this game. Arizona is a legitimate NC contender, and I don’t think we could beat them on our best day.

Good to see Noah knock down some 3s. For me, that’s the key to his future. Teams no longer respect his shot, but if he can regain that, it’ll open up his rim game.

We’ll see how we recover vs. ASU. Gueye can’t miss extended time.

I don't think it is tough to evaluate at all. Zona is a better team with a very good coach. They have more weapons on offense and their defense is really tough.

No one is surprised we lost. We have some work to do....clearly. And a couple more players would help.

Up until the point where Gueye, starters get INJURED trying to win, down 20 points with 6,7 minutes left, vs #2 Arizona, instead of putting scrubs in, and getting ready for ASU.
Guaye needs the experience. I can't fault Smith for keeping him in the game.

Yay! WSU, Smith got Gueye injured, trying to prevent, and succeeding, a 20 point lead, from becoming a 30 point blow out, with 5,6,7 minutes left, down to a 12 point lead.

Getting it down to 12 point lead, from a 20 point lead, instead of becoming a 30 point lead, with 5,6,7 minutes, was worth Gueye getting injured, and WSU possibly, probably losing 1,2,3 more games, they might probably win with a uninjured Gueye.

Yep that was so worth it. What a trade off. NOT.

No. This Zona team cannot win a natty. They are excellent...but not quite good and deep enough at the guard position. They need more creators.
I think you are looking for reasons to discount them. This Sunday I will be watching the Cincinnati Bengals play in the Superbowl. If they can make it to the Superbowl, then Arizona can win it all. Will they? Probably not, as I would say that for every team, including Gonzaga.

Not fair.

Smith should think like you do, plan on a player getting hurt. He probably should have pulled all of the players off the court and just forfeited the rest of the game.

I've seen a lot of NCAA champions. I'm not looking for a way to discount them. I'm trying to evaluate them objectively.

You're right that I could be wrong. That would be embarrassing if they won it all. 😬

No, but put in Ryan Rapp, Matt Wolf, etcz and the rest of the scrubs with 5,6,7 minutes left, down by 20, getting the scrubs, valuable playing and development time, etc.

When your winning or losing by a Semi blow out with 4,5,6, etc, minutes left, thats when you get the scrubs in to get them valuable, playing, development, time, and preventing unnecessary risk of injuries to your starters.

There is a reason why Arizona, took out all the starters, and put in the subs, scrubs, when they were up by 22 with 5,6,7 minutes left, in order to get subs, scrubs, valuable playing, development time, and to prevent injuries to their starters, and to rest their starters.

Too bad, when Arizona pulled their starters, and put in their scrubs, with 4,5,6 minutes left, that WSU, Smith didn't follow Arizona's good example and got Gueye injured.

Aside from Rapp & DeWolf....who else was on the bench would you put in the game that had not played yet? No Jackson available, no Koulibaly available. I guess the walkon guard Burghardt could've played....but he's been in 2 games all year, I think. I don't blame Smith for Gueye's injury. Arizona hadn't pulled most of their starters at that point. (They only played 8 guys all night). It was a great opportunity to give Gueye more experience against top level opposition.

I just want to see us capitalize on talent and athleticism while we got it. With transfer and portal craziness half the team could be gone at any time and we are starting over.

Taller guards. More experienced bigs. We can go toe to toe with them if we are hitting shots. We did not hit shots. We played well overall, but not well enough to win against that level of competitor.

If we hit anywhere near our 3 point average for the season, we win. Their D was partly responsible for the poor shooting, but we missed a lot of open looks.

Long story short, they put together a more complete game, and won. But we played well; that effort, even with the poor 3 point shooting, would win 2/3 of the PAC games this year.

Agree that Gueye benefits from PT against top competitors.

That game was like watching an apple cup (before this year). Painful, couldn’t do anything we’d been doing the last 5 weeks. They rubbed it in our faces. Frustrating. I knew it was a long shot but thought we’d put up a better fight than that.

Would've been nice to pull off the upset, but Arizona played really well on defense and was not going to look past the Cougars. I actually give the team some credit for coming back early in the second half and really never quitting, but you can't shoot 26% in the first half and go 0-12 from 3-point range and really expect to recover against a team like that. Cougs actually outscored Arizona in the 2nd half even though the outcome was never in doubt midway in the second half.

Mikalas could you please stop calling our players SCRUBS
Thank you. It’s a chat board it’s fair to share your thoughts about what you are seeing with players and their performance. Unfair to call names and throw insults at 18/19 year old kids who put an insane amount of time and effort in to their sport to represent the school. Now if you want to hurl insults at Earnie Kent let’s say, have the F at it, if you make millions to coach a game you are fair game.

3rd stringers, are somewhere between some to often called SCRUBS, etc, AKA,IE, putting your scrubs in when your either ahead or behind, 20+ points, etc, with about 3,4,5,6 minutes left in game.

That is said and done in both football and bball, by some to almost w semi lot of home team fans, etc.

Saying that is NOT being offensive, rude, mean, insultive to a MAJORITY of coaches, players, fans, etc.

You can stop KNEE JERKING over the scrubs term any time now.

you continue to broadcast loud and clear you know zero about sports! You’re the typical church league, would’ve couldve should have super star .Uncle Rico
