Has it come to this?

Since the NCAA, athletes, boosters, attorneys, networks, administrators, parents, aunts and uncles, and Porky Pig have managed to completely **** up what was once the beautiful thing that was amateur college athletics, have we reached the absolute point of insanity where there are no more rules? If a guy loves playing football so much but knows he isn't good enough to make it in the pros, what is to stop him from just keeping playing-maybe even 8-10 years while earning extra degrees? What if a guy goes to college but just never goes to class and has a 0.00 GPA like Blutarski? So what? Since the players are now getting paid, what is to stop someone from coming back to college and playing again after 2-3 years in the pros as a sub?

Perhaps we are so far gone in college athletics that we will have to ask US Congress to attempt a fix. Good Lord, I shivered even thinking about such a cluster, but how else is it going to get under control. Or have Trump assign it to Vivek and it will get done in 2 days.

I am seriously sick in my heart at what has happened to college athletics. :-(

Coach Jake Dickert on the shortlist for Wake Forest?

Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson is stepping down and will move into an advisory role within the athletic department, people briefed on the decision told The Athletic on Monday.

The 57-year-old Clawson has been a head coach for all but one season since 1999, across stints at Fordham, Richmond, Bowling Green and Wake Forest. He spent the 2008 season as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator.

Potential candidates to fill the Wake Forest job could include former West Virginia coach Neal Brown, James Madison head coach Bob Chesney and Washington State head coach Jake Dickert, people briefed on the situation said.

The Athletic: Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson stepping down: Who will take over Demon Deacons?

What could have been…

We open 8-1 (we were probably never beating Jeanty on the road), warts and all. Coaching carousel/portal happens and the team absolutely implodes; ending 2024 with an 0-4 skid to close the season, notwithstanding the respectable last stand in San Diego.

In another universe, at full strength and without the drama, we effortlessly go 12-1 and are a bubble playoff team, either winning our bowl game or at least showing out and demanding a second look as a future P4 add.

Instead, university admins are broadcasting pay cuts for the school’s golden goose in this pivotal transition year, the entire team hits the eject button and we go from minor league royalty to an also-ran in the MWC.

Hindsight is 20/20, but it’s honestly difficult to imagine playing a poker hand any worse. I wonder how grim it gets from here in terms of recruiting and staffing in light of public austerity, power conference demotion and bowl tie-ins and revshare, staffing instability, etc.
