With the transfer that evidently ate the 2014 extra scholarship there are 12 open offers for the two 2015 positions. Looks like Tony Anderson 2015 SF who is visiting in September will more than likely take one of these spots.

Looks like another PF would be the most important need.

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

I would guess that there will be about 2 more slots open after reality sets in for some of the reserves after this season

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

I agree we will have more open scholarships in 2015 but it will be from this freshmen class. I think at least 2 leave after their first year.

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

That seems a bit odd to me. Wonder why you would recruit them if you didn't think they would last? Thought that the former coach did far too much of that. Take players to practice with or to boost the team GPA.

Here's a list of 2015 offers, for reference: https://washingtonstate.rivals.com/offerlist.asp?sport=2&school=95&year=2015

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

Happens all the time especially when coaches have to fill rosters with what is left over in the spring. Kent filled his roster, and will hope someone rises to the top. Simply put he did what he had to to fill spots. This kid from Houston is very perplexing.

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

iI think that Kent wanted a player who can provide basket defense. Izundu,if properly motivated, can fill this role. He is a 6'10 shot blocker who can run the court and block shots.

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

Yep and it is likely he will be available after December if all thinks work out.

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

Why do you think the transfer is perflexing? Not athletic enough? He is a shot blocking defensive player that can run the floor. He is depth at this point. He is a replacement for Hunter.

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

I guess the most perplexing part to me is from what I see and from what the kid has done so far on the court stat wise, i don't feel he warrants a scholarship. I am hoping for an increase in talent and a higher level of recruit. So far the recruits seem to be at the same level or lower. I understand Kent was behind the eight ball this year and I think he did pretty good considering. This is a project who looks like he can't even help next year because of eligibility. It seems like we just took another teams Hunter. I really hope we start pulling better recruits and as such wish we would have kept the scholarship. That is if he is indeed a scholarship player. Why are you not perplexed by this transfer? Is this what you expected? Is this the level of recruit we should except without question? If so we might as well stayed the course and saved the buy-out money for new football stuff.

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

i understand your concerns. I guess we will have to see how the team looks this year under Kent. i have see videos of Izundu and he should not be another Hunter or Hawkinson Talking about puzzlement,i did not see one ,moment in Hawk's videos that suggested D1 talent. But his supporters see a talent there

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

I can't remember a 6-10"+ player coming into WSU that hasn't been in the "project" category going back 30 years. Baynes was raw in terms of skills but his combination of size, strength, and decent athleticism were hard to deny and his work-ethic was second to none. Hawkinson is somewhat the opposite of Baynes coming in although I think/hope he has the work-ethic to become a solid rotation player if he sticks around for 3 more years.

Izundu's athleticism is definitely there but whether he has anything else to offer remains to be seen. If he plays with energy and works at it he could turn into a productive player. We saw that with Fred Ferguson going back to the 90's in the way back machine.

Kent has maintained he doesn't want to "save" scholarships. I would expect more than 2 signed in the next class.

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

Yes this is exactly the type of recruit/transfer that I thought Ernie would bring in to help. 3-Star player that is athletic as contrasted to stiff.

I won't agree or disagree but the previous Coach never got us an athletic transfer with a fair amount of potential. As to the money I think the fans and students spoke with their feet. Can't say that I disagreed. Whether Ernie will be better is open to interpretation but so far he is doing okay. Not great but okay.

I think you will find us getting closer and closed to the 4-star recruits like making Rex Pfluger's cut to the final five. He is a 4-Star player. Whether we will land him or not is a question but we are in the hunt. Bigs are the hardest to find and to land.

Ernie won't keep a scholarship if he can fill it. I am actually impressed that he got a player who may well be elgible after the first semester according to the rules. That will be Pac-12 help or experience.

He will also provide some depth for the 2015-16 season after we loose the center.

Kid was 17 when he signed with Houston which was a mess and he didn't evidently perform and quit after his Frosh year, yet was talked back into joining the team for his next season when the coach was on the ropes.

Playing 8 minutes a game and getting 22 blocks in some 160 minutes shows you some ability and that as a freshman.

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

Great points. Especially if he can contribute in practice and maybe hit the floor after the first semester.

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

Not sure why you think he is so dang athletic? At 6-10 this athletic player was able to grab less than 1/2 a rebound a game in high school. My point guard is 5-9 and averaged 3 rebounds a game. Also look at who he had his blocks against. 7 of the 22 came against San Jose state who won 9 games total and Grambling who didn't win all year. 2 more against Louisiana College a D-111 school and 3 against 11-22 Chicago state. Thats more than half of his blocks in 4 games against very poor competition.

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

i saw a video tape of Izundu in high school. He was playing against the supposedly #20 th rated Center and Izundu was blocking his shots straight behind him. He was dominant and if a few players blocked a couple of shots they would be their only season highlights. Izundu elevated quickly straight up and was way above the rim. A player has to be athletic to do that. Granted ,he did not play much in college but Dickey had lost his team and his two big men were transferring out.Izundu has potential and one hopes that Kent and staff can bring out the best in him.. He is a 6'10-215 pd center who can jump and has the timing to block shots. I would call that athletic. If he can produce,we will just have to wait and see. I too, hope that Kent can bring in two or three more highly rated players. But i am satisfied with his first year of recruiting. He brought in a whole team of five athletic guys. Let s give them a chance to produce.

Re: 14 Open Offers for 2 positions

He is almost done with securing his second year of recruiting now. Considering everything he has a lot of offers out for the two remaining 2015 spots. We have 4-Stars giving us the cut of their top 5 (Rex Pflueger) we have Oak Hill guys coming in September for an official (Tony Anderson), we have offers out for every position.

Making the offers, getting on the final lists and getting them in for visits will be the job of the staff but they are now on course and even have a couple of 2016's out there. No doubt more offers on those to follow.

The open lines of communication are far better than the last five years when it was tough to even follow who the staff was looking closely at. Now the info is out there and available to all.

No doubt we will have some attrition along with the loss of our three seniors and they seem to be on top of all of that.

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

I would do a back flip we land Rex

Tony Anderson from the high light reel looks like he has a nice mid range game, which is kind of a lost art. Not much else out there on him not rated by any of the major recruiting services that I see. Plays for Oak Hill which has traditionally produced good players. His AAU team went 12-8 over the summer and he started 9 games. Averaged 3.8 points, 2.8 rebounds in a little over 10 mins a game against some good competition including a win over the Oakland Soldiers.

Re: 12 Open Offers for 2 positions

" Rex" seemingly played with Dunbar on the Oakland Soldier team last summer. So perhaps he will help recruit Rex.This kid can shoot ,has great hops and would be a great recruit.
