Stanford, UCLA in elimination games today - at their own regionals
ASU in an elimination game today

Guess the Pac-11 isn't as strong as we thought. Or I thought.

Baseball is weird in short series, you get really random results. It's as simple as your pitcher being off or their pitcher having his best stuff.

Very true, which is why a double elimination format tends to minimize the damage of a random outing. We'll see how the Pac-12 schools end up, but it might be the Continuing Curse of Larry Scott that's at play during post-season in all sports....not just football and basketball.

Any individual game can turn on a fortunate break, so double elimination helps a bit, but still produces random results. Heck, if you placed the 2019 Mariners into the playoffs against the league's best teams they'd win the world series like 3% of the time. Even if they are clearly the worst team.

Well not really, at the HS and college level. You always have short series. In HS, a Tuesday game and a Saturday DH. Pretty much the same in college, except it's 3 games over the weekend.

If you have an overpowering pitcher (ex: Olerud 15-0), you have game 1 in the bag. If you have a great #2, you swept your HS doubleheader, you took your 3 game conference series. After that it gets dicey.

In the playoffs, it is about pitching early. Get in the CWS, and it starts becoming about hitters and your #3, 4 pitchers.
